CS9 reliability question

A deputy brought in his brand new CS9 to test out the other day...it jammed up on the second mag (ftf) and I asked him if he had cleaned it when he got it and he said no...so we gave it a good cleaning and lube and took it back to the range....it malfunctioned again, this time this time just the slide not going fully into battery by a 1/4 inch...a quick tap put it back into the game.....I don't know anything about these guns...do they require a 100-200 round break in? Also, we are using winchester non toxic practice ammo which is a little anemic....and the CS9 seems to have a stiff recoil spring....the deputy mentioned he might get a lighter recoil spring...but our carry ammo is 147 grain Ranger T's so I don't want to fool with the springs to work with practice ammo and possible screw it up for duty ammo....:confused:

Try some different, non-anemic ammunition and see if the problem persists. If it does continue to have problems, have someone else try it to see if there is some limp-wristing going on. Don't know about any break-in specific to these guns, however, my NIB 4013, which I believe is very similar in design to the CS9, now has 112 trouble-free rounds through it.
 
427 may be onto something. A brand new spring and some less than full power ammo might very well fail to cycle the slide. However, FTF could be all sorts of things. I'd be real interested to see how it does with some regular 9mm.
 
Try some defensive ammunition instead of the green stuff ...unless, of course, you're restricted to its use at that range, in which case I'd find another range.

My CS9 has logged a few thousand rounds of standard pressure 115gr, 124gr, 147gr, 115gr +P+, 124gr +P & 127gr +P+, all without any feeding stoppages or other malfunctions. I actually used my CS9 as the reliability standard against which I compared my G26 when it was new. (FWIW, the CS9 is less sensitive to grip technique when it comes to ejection patterns compared to my G26, which has seen over 10,000 rounds fired through it.)

BTW, S&W offers only 1 recoil spring for the CS9. I wouldn't fool around with trying to change the recoil spring in that little gun.

I'd try it again with some good quality regular ammunition, making sure the gun was properly lubricated. Also, make sure the magazines are clean, as they can come with shipping oil in them which can turn into sludge and potentially crate some feeding issues. The mags should be clean and dry.
 
I have to second what Fastbolt said. When I bought my first 4040PD it wouldn't cycle lighter loaded reloads. I put about 250 higher power factory rounds through it and now it works perfectly with anything I give it.
 
I don't trust all that Winclean...When we had the issues with the M&P's in the academy they gave the recruits back Beretta's. The guy who went on a ride-along with me told me the Beretta's malf'ed too...Which, as we all know, just doesn't happen. I guess there was a weak and/or bad lot of ammo.

I would test the pistol with duty rounds. If it works I'd look for a practice round that works.
 
Hi my CS9 probably has around 10000 rounds thru it and have not had many problems.When there is a FTF or FTE you just need to pop in a new recoil spring which I do after 2k rounds or so.I am not familiar with your ammo but try it with some duty rounds and see what happens.I would pop in a new recoil spring just for grins and giggles and see if it solves the problem......God Bless....Mike

I bought extra springs at Midway, and they listed two springs; one for CS9 C&S, and one for CS9D so I bought both. The CS9D spring is green and about 3/4 inch longer. The CS9D spring was in my search result for cs9, but now is not there. I checked CS40 parts and it's spring is the one I got and Midway shows model listing used to include cs9.
I can't guess why DAO would need heavier spring.
Any thoughts?

Last time I replaced the spring in my CS9, I think it was red. I purchased directly from S&W. Mine is DA/SA.

That is really interesting because my factory converted CS9 has the same red recoil spring....

The CS9 uses a red spring, S&W part # 26321, and the CS40/45 uses a green spring, part # 26331.

The suffix letters S, C & D only refer to models within each caliber (stainless, carbon & DAO).

The CS9 needs the red spring. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see the green spring cause the CS9 to choke and short-stroke.
