If you were only able to get one of the above, what would you all choose? What are the pros and cons of each?

Intent and grip would seem to be the deciding factor in these choices. If you plan to carry, a short barrel 66 would probably be the answer or the 2.5" 686. If you're looking for a woods/fishing/range peice, a 4" 686 would fit the bill nicely. If you have smaller hands, the 66 would probably be the answer. If you plan to feed the weapon a steady diet of full house 357 rounds, the 686 is your answer.

I don't see a bad decision in any of these. I own a 66 no dash and a 686 in 4". Both are superb, but if pressed to choose, I would go for the....well, I can't choose....flipping coin....ok, the 686-4.

The 66-7 is a four inch. The other 686 is a 7 shot w/o the lock and a 4 inch. What's a good price for these? Is the 2.5 686 more desireable than the 4 inch?

The 66's are my favorite for competition shooting. Balance, weight, fit to the hand are perfect.

That said, my defense gun is a 686 seven shot with a six inch barrel. Rock solid gun.

My silly guess on price for Utah would be the $400 ballpark maybe a bit more if condition is excellent. Barrel length is personal, but I don't see the appeal of a 2.5" 686 because an L frame is too big to conceal anyway so I prefer the accuracy of the longer barrel.

If it was to be my only revo......the 4" 686 would be my choice of those three.

If I could only choose of the 3 mentioned. Id pick the 686 4 inch as long as it didnt have the lock.

Is the 2.5" a no dash 686? If so, it may need to be sent back for the upgrade. Look for an "M" stamp near the model number. Just something else to consider.

As stated above, if I was only going to have one I'd probably go with the 4" 686-4. But the 2.5's are very nice too. I'd avoid the 66 simply because I believe the -7 is a lock gun, and I'm not a lock kinda guy. But thats a personal choice. If you like the size of the 66 better give it a try.

From your choices, the 686-4. Last of the everything you need, and nothing you don't, 686 revolvers. Regards 18DAI.

Even though the snubs are really handy, that 4" 686 would definitely be my pick. That should be as solid as a rock, and can be setup for both moonclips or speedloaders. Shoots both 357's and 38's. The grip is K frame size. Lighter than an N frame.

For what it's worth, Ranch Products moonclips have been working well for me. And for a 4" 686, Hogue Pau Ferro grips, fingergrove with no checkering work well for me - but are harder to hide for carry if you need to.

Just my opinion, and worth what it cost.

Last week I paid 600 for an absolutely excellent 686-4, 7-shot, 4" in Alabama. Auction Arms just finished an auction on the same gun in the same condition, and I think it went for 580. California seller.

686-4 is the best all around of the choices you have. It's pre-lock so you know it won't lock up while rapid fire which may cost you or your loved ones- life. And, because it is pre-lock, it's worth more than the others. Plus it's a seven shot correct?

686-4 gets my vote. As far a barrel length, frame size and conceal issues go,,, size is both relevant AND relative LOL. My 686-4 is a snub :-)

If I can only have one I'd get the 2-1/2" 686. I've got one and I absolutely adore it. For some reason I just shoot it well, better than any of my others. With the round butt, and a set of Ahrend's Retro Combats, it's an awesome carry gun.

66-7 has a two piece barrel, if you're a fan of those it's the gun for you. The four inch 686 is the absolutely great revolver with the 686 2 1/2" a close second.
