My first magazine, "16" rounds, the slide stayed open after the last shot. The slide now closes after the last shot is fired. What might the problem be?
My son tried the bulk "Herters-Russian-Cabales" 9mm steel case with 1 or 2 jams per magazine. Is there a solution?
Has anyone got their rebate? I bought mine 8/10/10 and still waiting.
Thanks
Edit. Got my rebate today. 11/1/10

First, welcome to the forum!

I guess there could be several causes to this problem, so let's start with the basics:

First, field strip, clean and (lightly) lube the gun as per manual. Do a visual inspection to see if there are any burrs, gunk or other foreign objects anywhere inside the gun. Also, you should disassemble the magazines and clean them out although I doubt that that's the problem.

I'm not familiar with that ammo you're using, but I suspect that it may be the cause. I would get another type of ammo and try it out. I normally use Winchester White Box (aka WWB), Federal Champion or Remington UMC. My sigma swallows these, and begs for more.

Once again, there could be several causes, but junky ammo may be the culprit!

Let us know how it works out for you. If you can't get it resolved on your own, call S&W customer service and they will send you a free shipping label and fix it for free.

Could just be a minor brake in issue; go shoot it again with something other than that Russian stuff and see what happens.

Good luck!

Well I am not to sure about the sigma, but if it were my 1911's I would try other mags to see if the issue persists, the follower in a particular mag could be the culprit. Another thing it could be is a worn or faulty slide stop lever. As I said I am not really familiar with the Sigma however those are pretty universal between semi-autos.

I have 2 Sigma's and both had "quirky" slides the first couple hundred rounds. My favorite was the slide went foward and chambered a round when I put a full mag in. Once again all that went away after "break in".

Could be break in period. (mine never needed one),ammo, or mag issue. If you haven't cleaned the gun for the first time it could be all 3.

Let us know

Do not use steel cased ammo; no good will come of it.

American firearms are chambered for brass cased ammo, not steel. Brass expands and quickly contracts allowing for extraction and is much softer than steel cased ammo.

Some people shoot it and swear it is ok, but ask most any gunsmith and they will tell you to stay away from it. My favorite AR tech locally says that 90% of malfunctions and returns to the store for ARs are caused by steel cased ammo.

Won't have anything to do with the slide not locking back though...

Insert an empty mag into the pistol and pull the slide back slowly. Watch through the ejection port as you pull it back. On the left front side of the mag well there is a lever that sticks out into the area where the mag follower comes up. With an empty mag, the follower is supposed to lift that lever up slightly and engage the Last Round Hold Open feature.

If the mag follower is not lifting the lever, then I would venture to say it's a magazine issue, maybe a tear down and check for some burrs on the follower or crud up near the top of the mag.

If the lever is being lifted and the slide isn't locking back then I would try blowing out the trigger area with some compressed air or gun scrubber, you might just have some buildup that isnt letting the slide lock engage.

Thanks everyone. I did not shoot the steel in mine. It was my son. I will go to work on your suggestons. The gun is new so more break in will no doubt help. I will try different ammo.Your help is welcomed.

I have used nothing but UMC 9mm Ruger ammo in my SW9VE. I have not had any malfunctions at all, let alone the one in question. I would have to agree with a few others on this thread and say it's the ammo. Field strip your gun and give it a good cleaning. Stay away from the ammo you've been putting through your Sigma.

I have a Sigma 9mm that came with one defective magazine. The follower still had some flashing from the mould process and was too wide to fit completely into the tapered section of the magazine body. Because the spring did not push it up far enough it would not reliably engage the slide stop. I just took the follower out and slimmed the sides on emery paper until it fit like the other magazine. I have not had any further problems.

I had one mag that would occasionally not hold open.
I stretched the mag spring ever so slightly so it pushed a bit harder and it works fine.
Had the same thing on an old Walther PP, the same thing fixed it.

I had problem with slide not staying open on last shot. Since problem I took mags apart to check rough edges and factory flashing on parts.
Cleaned with non-chlorinated auto brake cleaner. Followed by a coat of Shield It, a dry film lubricant by Nutek.
After first treatment I don't bother taking apart. Just clean and coat them every 600 rounds. Every time I shoot gun I wipe down mags.
