I'm interested to see some SB to RB conversions. If you have pics you can post, please state who did the work (if you know) and what your opinion of the end product is.

My specific questions...

How did the smith address a grooved backstrap?

How compatible are the conversions with standard RB grips?

Thanks,

Sorry, no pics here. Just about all of the target-sighted square-to-round butt conversions I have seen only involved reshaping the frame's grip straps and deepening the strain screw hole; sometimes not even fixing that. So, the grooves ended near the top of the backstrap. That has been the major clue the work was done.

I had one partner who had a 4 inch Model 66 round-butted by a local gunsmith, the late Robert Ballard, about 1980. Robert was a talented perfectionist and had re-cut those grooves in a manner that I sure couldn't tell from factory.

The lines aren't a problem.

Thanks, guys. Bullseye, what did you use to remove the grooves? Nice job, btw. And I have to ask, what's that empty case???

Yeah, I know; it's a R***r-- I cheated! The absence of any grip strap serrations and, even more especially, no mainspring screw in the front strap, make the Ruger "-Six" series particularly amenable to round-butting.

Ruger Security and Service Six revolvers have a bit more material in the grip area to grind away than a S&W does. I have seen quite a few Ruger's that have been nicely modified.

Hand grinner and sanding disc and file along with sand paper will get you there. The round holding the gun in the first picture was tooken by a member called "ALLEN FRAME", I got the gun from him and rebuilt it.

I round butted a 4" 65 to give it a feel similar to my 3" RB. Then I took some very coarse sandpaper to the Hogue grips to match the grip. All done by hand with files, sandpaper and crocus cloth. Sorry no photo, having trouble with photobucket.
