model 13- Model 10 differences

I recently acquired a Model 13-1, and put it next to my heavy barrel Model 10-3. I knew the cylinder on the 13 would be slightly longer, but I was surprised to learn the barrel on the 4" model 13 was about 1/4" longer than my 4" model 10. I also noticed the front sight ramp on the 13 was slightly longer than on the 10. I thought for sure the only difference would be the longer cylinder on the 13 to accomodate 357 magnum. I figured for cost-savings, both revolver models could use the same barrel and same front sights.

The M13 recoils more, meaning the front sight would need to be a little different that the M10. S&W barrel lengths are nominal. I have a couple of 6" guns that are actually 5 7/8". I think during the 70's & 80's, it depended on who was operating the machinery that day. The M13 has more heat treatment than the M10 to handle the 357. Bob

Yeah, I would not read too much into a quarter inch difference in the barrels. Like every thing else, there are tolerances that they stay within.

I hadn't thought about the sights. I assume that the standard police load for the .38 Special was the same one that had been around forever, using a 158 grain bullet. The .357 would not only have a higher velocity, but the standard load may have featured a lighter bullet. Maybe someone who was in law enforcement in that era could enlighten us.

Hi,
I have a model 13-2 and a model 10 heavy barrel both in 4 inch. I consider them the classic police service revolver. Other than the longer cylinder on the 13 I can't tell the difference in the way both shoot. Both are better than I will ever be. Actually, the model 13 envolved from the model 10-6. So to me there is little difference. I am just glad I own both of them.

Heiio,
I have an old looks like a heavy barrel model 10 it says MOD 101.
On the screw side it says.MADE IN USA
MARCAS REGISTRADAS
SMITH&WESSON
SPRINGFIELD,MASS.
This is an old gun 60,61, I guess.My question is did S&W have spanish on their guns or was this made for another country.
