Field stripping a recently acquired 3913TSW I noticed some strange looking wear/peening on the top of the frame where it contacts the slide. I can feel the marks on either side with my finger nail, and where it curves inward it gets deeper, maybe .005-.010". I looked at my 4003 and noticed something very vaguely similar on one side but nothing like this. It has not been fired by me yet but the slide seems to move normally.

It still has me a little concerned though, it doesn't seem normal.
The slide looks ok.
The area in question is right above the trigger shaped like a hockey stick.
Anyone ever seen this or make out what's going on with the receiver?

That would be where the barrel seats into the frame. I have seen this on lots of different guns and never had an issue with it. If you fit the barrel onto the frame without the slide you can see where it makes contact at this point. Hope this helps... Coffee

No worries, its normal according to S&W.

In my experience it is also self limiting - after awhile it stops, and goes no further.

Fastbolt told us that the only area of concern with the aluminum frames is the top of the area where the ledges on the barrel impacts the frame. IIRC, as long as the sharp angle at the top remains, you won't have any problem. Regards 18DAI.

I know I always thought it was silly and unnecessary but you could get a tube of Lubriplate 105 at NAPA and lube your rails. It might help a bit and now that I do it on my alloy framed pistols I definitely notice they're smoother when hand-cycled. Everything's better with lube ;) .

UCLALAW, I saw one of those at a swap meet last wknd. The seller wanted $475 for it. It looked like it was in great shape but I thought it was a little pricey. What do you think?
