Hi,
I inherited a 1917 or so .455 with bad corrosion both on the barrel and also along the sight near the hammer, however in removing that I've taken off the original blueing.
I'm a forum newbie, but this is a family heirloom so can anone give me advice on reblueing the gun myself - or is this a job for a pro? If I got a reblueing kit online and practiced on some scrap steel would i soon suss out how to start and stop the oxidization process?
I'm not in the States, so there's no point recommending your local S&W wizard to me.
Thanks for your time and wisdom.

I've had some good luck with Birchwood Casey Cold Blue. The problem with cold blue is it will eventually wear off. But, it can always be re-done.

The biggest part of a re-blue is the polishing of the metal prior to the bluing. This is not a job for an inexperienced person. You can ruin an otherwise nice gun by improper polishing and cold blue. If you really have to have it re-blued, let a professional do it. It will cost around $200 to $300 depending on how bad it is, but you will be able to pass a family heirloom down that is worth having.

Hi Parked,

PLEASE do not do anything to this Revolver for the time being.

Continue to discuss and seek opinions.

Images would greatly aid the matter, if you could post some.

Ths difference between what may be respectfully done to ammend deteriorations, and, what may done which is violating and insulting to the Arm's character and integrity as-is, especially if genuinely 'Historic', is a choice best made informedly, once one understands the difference.

So the blue is already removed from these areas...I use Birchwood Casey also, the stuff in the white plastic tube. Follow directions on the tube exactly, and you will get a good result.
