I did a search and found that many people have had finish peeling on their 642's. Anyone experience some honest holster wear without any peeling? I don't mind regular holster wear, but it would be aweful to think that everyone's 642 finish eventually peels.

Thanks,
Rob

I think that most 642s don't have peeling finishes. Mine certainly doesn't and shows almost zero holster wear. I'll bet most peeling is the result of two things: 1) some guns that left the factory with a defective finish and, 2) guns that were cleaned with harsh solvents. My guess is that number 2 has peeled more revolvers than number 1.

My 642 has never been cleaned with harsh solvents and is on its way back to Smith as we speak for a second refinish. Chipping, pealing and a black "fungus"-looking discoloration (mostly under the grips). Still a good shooting, accurate (for a snubbie) and dependable tool.

Every used 642 I have seen had finish peeling off on the back of the grip frame. It doesn't hurt the gun functionally, but doesn't look very nice either.

I've only been carrying and shooting mine for a short time, but it still looks as good as the day I bought it.

Owned three 642s. All were cleaned with the same solvents. The two older guns had no finish problems. The newest one had its finish peeling after a very short time. Sent it back for a refinish. The same problem happened again with the refinished gun. It was sent back for the second refinish and then I sold it as soon as I could. I wouldn't get another new 642 but would stick with a 442 which seems to have a more durable finish.

the finish on my 642 started going away pretty fast. i have read all sorts of warnings about the alloy underneath starting to corrode as soon as air got to it after the finish came off. i have not had this experience.

i got some oops and some paper towels and soaked the gun then wrapped it in a couple of plastic bags. 4 hours later the rest of the finish was mostly gone. i put in one of mr. smith's plugs and installed some collin's craft faux ivory grips and i have a really nice looking and nice shooting 642. i wipe the gun down a lot but in would do that in any event since it gets really hot and humid here. i have had no corrosion issues. this gun is my usual cwp carry.

Mine is from the mid 90's and had quite a lot of wear after living on my ankle (daily) for over 12 years. A few small areas had begun to peel just the tiniest bit. Discoloration appeared in spots throughout the frame. It was all cosmetic. I kind of liked the way it looked.

A few years back I sent it back to S&W to correct a minor mechanical issue. While it was there they refinished it, even though I hadn't asked them to. When I got it back I could hardly tell that it was the same gun (other than the telltale nick on the front sight). It really looked nice. It appeared that they had bead-blasted off the clear coat that was originally applied.

Unfortunately, one day after shooting I gave it a bath in the ultrasonic. When it came out there were dark splotches all over it. I'm assuming that the cleaner attacked the aluminum. Now it looks nearly like it did before S&W refinished it.

I'm not losing any sleep over it. It's an ankle-gun for pete's sake! It leads a rough life and shows it.

I carry my 642 in my pocket, in a cloth holster. The trigger guard chipped almost immediately. The backstrap soon to follow. Now around the side plate. The finish looks ugly. It is an ugly gun. It has one heck of a trigger pull. Sweeeeet! I love this gun.
