Hello all!

I am a huge S&W fan. I confess I joined the forum to specfically get info on my most recent purchase. That said, I'll stick around for a while and talk about all the other great S&W guns.

I just bought what was marked as a Pre-15 38 Special. It's a 4-screw with 5" barrel, heavy rib, Baughman front sight, no model number on the yoke. That seems to place it between 1955 and 1957. S/N is K3034xx. Overall condition is good to very good, but it's missing the original diamond stocks. I "only" paid $325 for it. That's what it was worth to me, so I don't care if I paid too much.

I think I read another post and in a S&W book in Barnes & Noble that the 5" models were apparently made for police target use. The 5" variant was not mentioned in either of two popular gun value books. Besides that bit of intrigue, despite Googling every variation of this gun I can only find a few paltry links. THAT was what sent me over the edge and made me buy the gun.

Finally, because of the purchase price and that the 5" barrel make the gun "uncommon" but not "rare," I don't think it warants the $50 fee for the S&W history letter. But I'd sure love to know more about this lovely, mysterious revolver.

Thanks!

Sounds like one of the 5" K-38's made for the Illinois State Police in the '50's. If so, you got a smokin' deal. We need PICS!

Smith and Wesson kind of used some stupid logic in assigning model numbers. Generally the Model 14 is considered the descendant of the K38 with the longer barrels. The Model 15 is mostly viewed as the "combat" version with 4" barrel. They did make a fair number of them in 5" as K38s. Its a fine gun and a good shooter. Sorry about the loss of the diamond Magna's in the past. If you want it to look "right", they're pretty much available at the bigger gun shows. But you've got to go and look. A set in presentable condition will probably run you about $75, give or take.

Carry the gun along with you if you want to buy a set. Its better to spend the money on a set that fits well. Upsets you when they don't. :)

I agree that you probably got a deal, but you would need a letter to see how great a deal. Its certainly worth $325 as a functional 38 special because Taurus 38s are more new - for obviously less. There is a big value difference between it being factory 5 in made for LEO or special order, a 6in gun that was cut, OR if someone replaced the original barrel with a 5in, for whatever reason. Since if original, it would be worth much more than $375 (325+50), I think this gun is worth lettering. Even if the letter has bad news, $375 for a gun that out last you with common sense/basic care? A good deal IMO, either way.

That seems to place it between 1955 and 1957. S/N is K3034xx.
According to Supica and Nahas, K303xxx puts it in 1957, so just before model numbers were applied.
And a 5" barrel, too. Great find! You see any more like this you don't want for yourself, let me know!!!
For what it's worth, I completely agree that you should get a letter for this one. You got it so inexpensively, you can probably afford to put out another $50 to get the real skinny on it.
Good luck.

You may very well have one of the K-38s with 5" Heavy barrel shipped to the Illinois State Police . . . or one of many factory "overruns" that were shipped to various dealers because the 5" heavy barrel was such a favorite. They are fabulous guns.

If you'll email me with the full serial number I will look it up and see if it went to the ISP. If it went somewhere else, I can't tell you where it went, but a factory letter would. In either case, a factory letter is in order.

P.S. you didn't pay too much . . . quite the contrary!

Photos of my 5" Four Screw K-38

Hello again! Thanks to Russ and others who shared their wisdom in my quest to find out just what the heck I'd bought on my latest whim. It seems I have an early 1957 four screw, 5" barrel K-38, and not a Pre-15 as the sale tag on the gun indicated. Doesn't matter to me as I love it either way. Russ said the serial number is within the range shipped to the Illinois State Police, but I'd have to get the letter to be sure, and to be sure what gstocks it was originally fitted with. Maybe some day. In the meantime I've posted some photos. Enjoy!

Thanks again brethren!

Beautiful gun. Linde (the resident 5" K-38 authority) nailed it, you definitely didn't pay too much for this one. It likely shipped with checkered walnut Magna stocks, which look like the ones currently on the gun but with an uncheckered diamond around the stock screw, an earlier version of the current set.

Enjoy, and if you request it let us know what the letter says.

Pre-whatever the heck it is, you have a 5" K-38 Masterpiece.

I have K302808, the brother to yours.
Mine has a later hammer than yours, and target grips which obviously
have been with the gun for most of its life time.
600 odd numbers apart they were probably from the same batch.

Mine shipped in July 1957, less than a year after my birthday.

Outstanding

. . . and welcome to the 5" K-38 club!

Aside from its law enforcement connection and never cataloged distinction, your 5" is the perfect balanced Masterpiece. Not too short . . . not too long . . . but just right! :D

Enjoy . . . and let us know how it shoots,

Russ
