Painted features on M&P15-22?

Hey, I see many 15-22s with painted engravings, like a white M&P logo on the receiver, or a red FIRE, etc. Are all these customized, or does S/W make sub-models of 15-22 that come with these features? I'm in Mass so there's only one compliant model available at the LGS.

its all user painted. Smith sends em out all black. look up "tacti-crayola" for the lettering.

I use Testors on my AR's. Use a fine brush and the little bit of spill over just use a piece of thinner soaked paper towel wrapped around a small block of wood. Think like a sanding block but tiny. The flat thinner soaked surface wipped off the overage and left the paint in the stamped areas alone.

The smudge around the safety is just where the thinner cleaned of some oil residue. It had zero effect on the gun itself.

It was pretty simple and I think it will take more abuse than crayon

Believe it or not pretty much EVERYBODY on this forum uses crayons. It's very easy to do and I've had mine done for a couple of months now and it still looks great. All you need to do is pick a color and press the crayon wax into the M&P area and wipe away the excess. I used some WD 40 to wipe away the excess and again it looks great. Look up "tacti-crayola" and you'll find a step by step process.

I usually use Duracoat or Aluma-hyde coatings that are designed for firearm applications. My technique is put the coating in a syringe with a 21 or 22 gauge needle and apply in the recesses evenly, this way it is uniform and will not need to be redone, if done by manufacturer's directions. The down side is choose a color that you want to live with because the only way you are getting it off is media blasting.

As a machinist of 30+ years I used these on tooling and works great on the M&P 15-22. works like the "Tacticalcrayola", only more permanent.

Sharpie Paint Pens

I used a Sharpie Paint Pen to give my M&P 15-22 the "Tacticool" look. It was easy to do and I just wiped off the excess with a little paint thinner. Here's a link to the Sharpie site: Sharpie® | Sharpie Oil-Based Paint Marker Fine

Here is my 15-22, as of today( when I took these pics with my iPhone). The crayon lettering that is on it, has been on it OVER a year now, and been through VERY hot outdoor summer shoots, Run and gun drills, mud, squirrel hunts, etc etc. So far not the slightest signs of coming off. Love firing my 15-22.(when I can get it away from my wife lol)

Thanks for the replies...would not have guessed crayons, but they look great. I'll be raiding my kids' stash (what kid needs a white crayon, anyway?)
