Tired Pre-27 5in

Greetings
This is my first real thread on this site- on any site actually-- Here goes!!

I am talking with a gent that has a Pre-27, 5 screw, 5 inch which appears to of been a "workhorse". The barrel and yoke numbers match (17457) and the Serial # is S 10****. The bluing is extremely worn, there is a bright scratch under the cylinder release as if a screwdriver missed it's mark. It has period correct Cokes but without numbers and in very worn condition- Timing is off and the condition of the bore is unknown- It's purported to of been an FBI shooter. He was initially asking $750.00- I offered him $500. He's brooding over it.
Reaching out to my pool of experts- Fair market value???

I think your offer is on the high side. As you describe it, I wouldn't go over $400 -$425.

I never heard of the FBI using 5 inch guns, only 3 1/2 and the occasional 4 -inch guns. In the condition you describe, maybe $450. I wouldn't pay a cent more.

I think your offer is actually not too bad. You mention worn Coke grips. Depending on how worn they are they may make up for the decrease in value due to guns condition. Perfect Cokes go for $500 to $600 so price accordingly. If the grips are well worn then maybe $200 to $250 for the grips and $250 to $300 for the gun. I'd say the math is on your favor if he takes thate deal.

By the way, if you we're to make an FBI connection which seems unlikely, then you'd get some value back there too.

Buy the gun, not the story.

FBI agents were known to buy their own guns. Could have been carried by an agent.

I suspect $500 may be a fair price in CA.

The laws drive prices up in CA. I think $500 is not outrageous. $750 is.

BTW- This model did not come with "Cokes" and that serial number (what little of it you posted, really, 2 Xs are enough) is from long before "Cokes" were introduced on the 44 Magnum.

We out on the left coast do not sell used guns- we make "manhole" covers out of them. This gun is in Texas- And my apologies, the serial # is S1062xx. Anybody have a pic of the appropriate grips that should be on this 27?

Tell me more oh wise ones!!!

Here's a picture of mine with Magna's. Made in 1954 the S/N is in the S122 range.

I paid more for it than he's asking for the one you're talking about, but this one is in better condition I take it. A little blue wear, but locks up tight and shoots great.

If you get it, we expect lots of photos. here is my pre-27 that I got about a 18 months ago for around $350. In all fairness it has the last owner's name engraved under the after market target grips.

I still have not had a reply to my offer- I think he feels that it's worth more. He originally described it as a "RM"> I may have hurt his pride when I respectfully disagreed- Oh Well!!

With all due respect to the seller, first this was a R/M, now it's an former FBI duty weapon. A few to many stories to make me happy, especially with a gun you can't inspect in person. I assume the seller is demanding a cash up-front payment

I would pass on that one.

I have to agree with Muley about this.

Buy the gun, not the story.

With that serial number, and all the wear, $400 is tops. And with all
that wear, I'm not so sure that I would even want it. If I were you,
I'd call him back and tell him that you've changed your mind. $400 is
all you are going to pay, and he can take it , or leave it. I'm sure
he'll leave it, but that is OK in my book. Worn guns are too much
trouble.
