Model 36

What are Model 36's going for these days?? Saw one in a pawn shop that looked to be in excellent-excellent+ condition. Nickel with square butt. Appears to have been used very little if at all. Not sure of the serial number, but looked like a J prefix in front. No diamonds on the grips, either. 2" barrel model. Thanks for any help!

Prices vary by location and concealed carry laws as states where concealed carry permits are easy to get the Model 36 is in high demand. In Arkansas a really clean Model 36 would go for as high as $450 if it had a pinned barrel. I'd put the price range at $350 to $450 depending on condition.

Owner has $425.00 on it, but I think I could get it for around $375.00 as he want to deal now and seems to be moving guns.

$375 would be good. I bought my 36-1 for $350, several were going for $399 at the show. That was for 3 inchers, which is all I looked at.

I saw two sell recently through private sales, one with box, serial nunmbers on grips matched the frame, papers and warranty card sold for $375, shipped in 1968, the other had a 1963-1964 shipping date, with diamond grips serial numbered to the frame, no box or papers sold for $325. Just what I have seen.

Thanks! Went to look at this gun again and saw that the serial number was J96X,XXX or something in that area. Just wondering when it was manufactured?? Also, it was stamped Model 36 in the yoke area. No dash or number after the model number. Do not think it had a pinned barrel, either. Just curious as to the year of mfg. Do not plan to pay in the $400's for this gun, either.

i bought a pre, or baby chief....not real sure, coil spring.....large trigger guard.....small grips...late 1956, early 1957....no model
number......appears unfired....except from factory....no box. no papers....$500......but i wanted it, it's your money......do you want to shoot it?...carry it?.....put it in the safe.....it makes a difference.

Carry and shoot. However, whoever owned it before didn't shoot it much if at all. Just thought it was a real nice Smith in real nice original condition. Maybe too nice for a shooter, but that's what I'd do with it.

Here's my track on the model.

Smith & Wesson 36 1-7/8 in Bbl Revolver in .38 Spl. Bluebook of Gun Values (32nd Edition) indicates between $360 in 95% condition and $535 in 100% condition for this gun. I have 62 recorded prices for this model gun from $250 to $600 over a period of 3 Yrs 5 Mos ending May 16, 2011. The average price as of that date was $394. No refurbs, no refinishes, regular sights. All represented as 95% or better. No distinction for engineering revision, if any, no special editions, no distinctions for box, papers, tools. Current or last MSRP is $822.

Here's how the data charts out. Notice the Average Price Trend is was at about $440 as of May 2011. Better examples of the gun would command higher prices, especially with box, papers, and so on.
