I was under the impression that all sb model 66-1's came with football cutout stocks. There is a beautiful 6" NIB 66-1 on GB with speedloader cutouts. Did they come both ways?

Unless you are the original owner then I would hazard they are not the original stocks.

Oh, and that is a good looking 66!

That's what I thought. The seller evidently bought it at an estate sale and is advertising it as bought new, then put away and it definitely looks it. Evidently the stocks were changed, but the new owner/seller was not aware. Either way, it's at over $1000 now and most likely worth it.

My 66-1 (57KXXXX) has speedloader cutout grips. I am 99% sure they are the original grips it shipped with.

I'd be careful about drawing any conclusions about the stocks on Mod. 66-1s. I've owned a bunch of 66 no-dashes and dash 1s and every original one I've seen has had footballs..

However ..... The 66-1s were still being produced when the 686s first arrived and they, to my recollection, were the first mass produced models to have speedloader cutouts standard. It wouldn't surprise me a bit if some of the last 66s, and some other K frame models, had been shipped with cutouts... K frame and L frame stocks are interchangeable and it was in a time period when S&W was converting to SL cutouts on all target stocks....

It's always nice to hear from original owners concerning questions like this. Those owner would know if their guns had ever been messed with. I'd like to hear from one of our moderators, snw_19 357, on this subject. He is an "in-house" specialist on Combat Magnums, having compiled a lot of research on them, and he may have the answer....:)

Heck, I don't know. :)

It seems S&W started using the Goncalo alves Checkered Target Stocks with speed loader cut around 1980, about half way through the -1 change. But, especially in the beginning, it would depend on which style they grabbed out the box.

This is about the same time S&W added a 'typed' label to the end of the box opposite the handwritten one.

Although they appeared half way through the change, if you look at serial number ranges, it looks more like 30% extractor relief and 70% speed loader cut and I have observed a lot more 66-1s with speed loader cut than with extractor relief, easily 2-1.

Here's another data point: original owner, 58Kxxxx, purchased 1980 (for $246 total), 6" barrel, speed loader cutout, remains unfired, handwritten label on box.

Thanks for the info, snw19_357...:)

here's another one with serial number 60K40XXX that's all original with "footballs" and I'm the original owner. Purchased in 1980 along with another 4" that also has the original footballs.

With supportive info from snw19_357 I believe it can be safely said either type stocks could be considered correct with the later Mod 66-1s...

A 4" 66-1 as delivered within one week of the 6" with a serial number in the 39K range.. The 6" is a couple of thousand numbers higher than STG38s Mod 66 and has the original"footballs" on it. Never say never with S&W....:)
