What advantage or disadvantage does a lined holster offer? Are they really easier on the finish?

I have only one lined holster and don't use it very often so I can't offer a good comparison but some say the lining holds embedded grit, etc which wears the finish. Sounds plausible and may depend on how clean you keep it.

I only have one lined holster as well. I think the smooth finish should be easier on the gun but only time will tell if this is the case or not.

I have been told by custom holster makers that it makes no difference. I would personally think a nice suede lining would be easier on the finish, but then I was told that the suede lining traps dirt easily than the hard heavier leather does, so it may scratch your finish more easily???

My competition holsters are lined for smooth draw, but my carry holsters are not.

I won't use anything but lined holsters on my highly polished blued guns. The chemicals used to treat leather can be corrosive , especially when damp from humidity , even on stainless guns.
Suede used in holsters is usually treated with silicone , and I always retreat my holsters with a good grade of silicone spray often. I've had some beautifully blued gun including my Python , in suede lined holsters for a long time with no damage. And yes , they do feel smoother on the draw.

I've always believed that lined holsters offer some protection but all Holsters will add some wear to a handguns finish.
