It is a Saiga. My brother has one just like it that he bought used. I never fired his but I have done quite a bit of handloading for it. He reports that it fires all my birdshot handloads with complete reliability. I also handload Lee slugs and round ball loads for it and he says it is perfectly reliable with those too. He reports that my Lee slug loads are accurate enough to stay on a man all day long at 50 yards, which is impressive considering they don't hit anywhere near a man at 50 yards with any other shotgun I have ever tried.
Not everybody that has one is similarly satisfied. It seems quality control is definitely not up to the standards of their 7.62x39 rifles. I'm assuming that they are all made at the same place in Russia, but I could be wrong. There are gunsmiths who specialize in all sorts of custom work on these things. The one in the pic is the civilian version which can easily be converted to look like its military rifle counterpart.

pluspea- I have done some conversions, collapsible stock, forends with rails,change out trigger group, trigger guard,reddot, light,flashider/muzzle brake,vertical foregrip, mags and drums. I have been very satisfied with function and accuracy. All parts are US made, I have done the work myself, parts and info from carolinashooterssupply.com, . They have excellent how to video's on line, knowledgeable staff and there prices are good. A drill, punch, needle nose pliers, screw driver, black paint . I did the first in an evening without difficulty. I have seen the conversions offered by different shops for 250-350 $. I would clean it, and shoot it, let all the parts "settle" then decide where you want to go with it. My wife at 5'2" can shoot it well as can a friend who is 6'5". Enjoy!!!!

I have had great success with mine. I had Tromix do the conversion involving moving the trigger and installing an FN type folding stock as well as a general "smooth up" and could not be more pleased with the results. I use ten rd mags. and 20 rd, MD Arms drums and everything works fine from "cheap" birdshot loads to slugs and buckshot. It is a heck of a good defense 12 bore.
