I had one of the original 686 no dashes in the early days. I sold it thinking I would pick up another soon. That was 26 years ago. I finally remedied getting around to due to a good friend.

Wish I had more and better pictures, but time and lighting won out so this is it for now.

Nice roscoe!

4" is the best IMO.

Had much the same story with a 586ND I bought new in 83 and sold in the mid 90's. Got one a year or so back and it's been the only one I've seen since, they're getting scarce.

Thanks Snapping Twig,

I think I had one of the BEST gun & gun related buying days Saturday. My other post about my Model 27-2...I picked up this 686-1 and what hope to turn to be a set of Coke Bottle grips. I'm waiting with baited breath for confirmation from some of the pro's.

VERY NICE! There is something about the overall proportions of the 4" 686s that make them the best looking S&W revolver out there! Don't get me wrong, I love all my other revolvers, but it is tough to beat the 686!!

Good looking gun...how does it shoot? Looks like you could run a couple hundred rounds thru that thing in one evening and never even know it. How does it handle a nice hefty 357 load???:) :) :) :)

If I had a friend that was good enough to find me a good deal on a nice 686 I would give him a nice set of cokes to go on his 28-2. Just saying...LOL

Congrats on the 686-1....she'll serve You well!

Bought My first 686 (it's a 4" dash 2) in May of 1990, and have been a big fan ever since. I still have that gun; it's My "in home", close quarters protector.

I picked up a 686 dash 1, 6" barreled a few years ago, and she's since been brightly polished and slicked up. I located a brand new forged/flash chromed .400" target trigger, and an internet friend sent me a brand new forged/flash chromed .500" target hammer for that L framed gun.
Forged .500" target hammers are very difficult to find for L-framed guns, and flash chromed ones are almost non-existent on the parts market.

Along with a nice set of reclaimed ivory grips sporting S&W medallions, she's not only beautiful to look at, but has the lightest action (SA 1.6 lbs wop) of My entire S&W collection.

Picked up this nice, early, AAF 2548, no XXX's, that was shipped 6-1982, back in 2005 for $395 shipped, off Guns America. It has the "M" modification and is a no dash revolver. Very accurate, dead center at 25 yards with full magnum loads. Shoots as well as my 1962 vintage Python. It's a keeper. Big Larry

Great revolver, better late than never. The early 686 4" is my favorite; totally reliable, accurate, nice trigger, great balance, no MIM, and no lock.

An excuse to post a pic...

Great choice!

Here is my 4" 686-4. It's a Plus with the RB. I just traded my 6" 686-1 and a few bucks for it. I just prefer the 4" to the 6".

I know, I should have got/kept both...

If anybody is interested, I can tell you where the 6" 686-1, in great shape for about five and a half, is for sale...just pm me.

My no dash 686 4" is my favorite of all the handguns I own. I will never part with it
