Here are a few photos of my Model 1917 commercial of early post WWII vintage. The serial range is 209,9xx and it is without the "S" prefix of some of these models. The whole gun is pretty nice and is original except for the later grips and a missing butt swivel although the securing pin for the swivel is still there.
Note the large S&W logo on the left frame and the smaller ejector rod assembly and comparably smaller recess cut under the barrel. This might suggest that the barrels were not simply old stock leftovers. (Sorry that the photos don't offer more detail. they are the best available for now.
I would be interested in knowing the number of these post WWII models produced and whether the "S" prefix or the non"S" were more abundant.

Just plain excellent!

Another nice one. I am possibly beginning to suffer from excellence fatigue after reading all your posts. :(

The conventional wisdom is that just under a thousand commercial postwar transitional 1917s were produced with numbers between 209792 and 210782. (Credit to SCSW there; I don't carry these numbers in my head.) It's not clear to me how many had the S prefix and how many did not, but it sounds like the ones without the S are rarer by far.

Another winner. Congratulations!

Would love to find a post war 1917 just as lovely as your, lucks dog your are, great find, cheers from Canada!

I notice in your photos in this thread and others that I have seen all show tags attached to your guns. Is this some personal inventory control method? Just curious.

Very nice commercial model by the way.

Thanks!

Thanks for the kind words gentlemen and especially the production information. This postwar model '17 was another of the guns that were the result of dumb luck rather than astute shopping. The tags help me keep track of any extra parts, special features, comments or the like.
