I have just purchased a used and in very good condition S&W 36 with the serial # 747451, can someone help me determine its Mfg. date ?

Thanks

If there is the letter J as a prefix before any of the numbers, then 1979-80.
If not, then about 10 years earlier.

Is there a good way to determine the $ value if the gun is in good to very good condition and mfg. in 1969 or 1970?

You can go to Gun Broker and do a search on the S&W model 36. You will see all sorts of ridiculous asking prices, so focus your attention on those that actually have bids on them. You can also "watch' certain items to see how much they sell. Many of the auctions on GB have either a high reserve price or minimum bid, go unsold, and are re listed ad nauseum. I used to be able to do a search for completed auctions but can't seem to do it anymore. Most of the nicer model 36's I've seen lately are selling in the 350-450 price range. As always, matching box, tools, and papers help put the price up.
