Default Carry Gun Range Time

How often do most of you take your regular carry gun to the range and how many rounds do you shoot?

Everybody practice drawing it from the holster too?

I hit the range monthly for about 50 rounds and don't practice the holster draw as often as I should.

It never hurts to practice more, but I do practice my draw and I dry fire with my carry guns. They are what I shoot at the range too the near exclusion of all others. I don't own "fun range guns". In fact I'll go so far as to say that I have no use for a full size .22 and have absolutely no regrets about selling my 6" 617. Practice sessions vary between thirty and sixty rounds. I shoot once a week.

I usually shoot every Sunday morning and shoot at least one of my 3 carry guns every time. 50 rounds minimum is normal for the carry gun plus 50 or so 22's and whatever else I happen to bring for fun. I have been known to put 100 light target loads through my 642 in one session along with 10 or 15 +P carry loads.

I don't practice my presentation as much as I should. My shooting club does not allow it. No double taps either. They want 2 seconds between shots.

I go to the range on at least a weekly basis...I fire 50 rds each out of my two carry guns before I move on to my fun guns. I practice draw, different shooting positions, firing while moving forward and backward, firing on my back etc. at different angles and distances up to 25 ft. It helps when you reload and cast your own rds and live within walking distance of your outdoor range.

I put 100 rounds through my carry gun(guns) every time I'm at the range. It's mostly homemade 148gr wadcutters folled by a cylinder or two of my personal defense ammunition. Like others have said I don't practice my draw enough.

I shoot every week, and use a carry gun about half of the time or a little less. The rest of the time I use a .22. While I think I understand Flop-shank's position, and basically agree with it, I do feel that practice with a .22 does accomplish something, even if not as much as with a real carry gun. Since I also practice with a carry gun fairly frequently, I don't feel bad about spending time with a .22, which IS quite a bit less expensive to shoot.

Typical ammo expenditure is between 30 and 100 rounds.

Lately, I haven't been practicing draw as much as I probably should.

I get to practice fast draw from holster when I'm at my dad's range in Florida. They don't like that type of stuff up here at the public range, but I'm working on joining a private club where I may be able to practice more efficiently.

I don't get to the range as often as most of you. For me it's about once a month. I always shoot all three of my carry guns (MP9C, 649 and Bersa .380), when I go. Typically about 100 rounds through each. I rotate between them shooting a mag or two before trading off. I add my 7" 22A to the mix for three reasons, it's fun, cheap and gives me that much more practice. I try and go early on a weekday and usually have the pistol range to myself. When that is the case I can practice my draw, rapid fire etc., without disturbing anyone. If it is crowed I usually don't stay as long and just focus on tightening up the groups.

I go about once per month and will put a minimum of 50 rounds thru my primary carry sidearm.

As for draw practice exercises - about once per week when I wipe the lint from my carry piece. I will feild strip and check my sidearm weekly between range visits and use that time to also practice my draw while it is unloaded for routine cleaning.

That's where dry fire practice works great, Barb. Practice draw and trigger squeeze while dry firing. Make sure you don't get in the habit of drawing and firing everytime. What you do in practice you will do when the SHTF exactly.

There's nothing wrong with that if it's working for you. I'll quote Elmer Keith here, "I'm in favor of anything that burns gunpowder". I'll go even further, toy guns and squirt guns ect. are of value to handle. I don't shoot a full size .22 because I don't want one more gun to clean in addition to my weapons. If what you're doing is working, keep doing it.

I'll inject something that may be considered too trite by some......Not everyone has done enough gun handling and shooting to instinctively and reflexively grip the gun properly.Quite simply put,the gun still feels just a bit foreign in the hand.No one was born handling guns.

I witness people (male and female)who grip the gun with an obvious uncertainty.Holding and gripping the gun often is very helpful.I once recall that even Jeff Cooper spoke of keeping a piece on his desk that he would pick up and grip quite often. The gun should feel as though it is thoroughly at home in the grip. This is important and often overlooked.

Hitting a fifty cent piece at 25 yards is fun and not without benefit but your carry piece should be used to hit a pie plate size area at 5 thru 15 yards quickly and reflexively the majority of the time.

Great advice Flop and in response to the no one was born handling guns my wife would probably disagree with that statement As for my range trips I average three times a week during the Summer and bout once a week Winter. Average session 125 to 150 rds. in primary carry M&P 9c and BUG Mdl. 60 Winter is coming on so I'm back to once a week.

About every 10 months or so. Always whilst drawing from a holster. Always tactical fire; timed, facing targets, multiple positions/distances.

Be safe.

I try to get to the range once a month but it's usually longer. When I do get there, I always shoot the guns I carry the most. I will run at least 50 rounds through each of the J-frames and 100-200 rounds through each of the Glocks.

I do not practice drawing. I should. But I should lose weight, exercise more, go to church and not work 10 hour days as well.

I shoot a lot of USPSA matches, always with my carry guns and never competition only equipment. Nowadays it's just with my revolvers, and most often with my 3" 625 which is my primary carry gun. I draw from my El Paso Street Combat holster, which is what I carry on the street.

I handle my revolvers every day and dry fire EXTENSIVELY. Through dry fire I have managed to break my Ruger Redhawk three times. I now dry fire exclusively with my Sig 229 DAK duty gun and managed to break that once. I find that my Sig points the same as all my revolvers, and the best use for a DA auto is preventing wear and tear on a good revolver.

I shoot every Saturday. I usually shoot 100-200 rds through my carry gun and the same with whichever fun gun I take.

I consider my carry gun (Ed Brown Special Forces) fun too.
