Default thinking about carrying my 638

well after alot of thinking I am wanting to add my 638 to my carry selection and I am planning on using a holster, BTW if any one has one laying around let me know I have virtually no money right now (darn holidays!), but how do you guys carry your j frames?

A 638 is what I carry in my shop every work day. I usually use a K&D Thunderbird IWB. Also have an Andrews McDaniel II for it.

Carry every day. Barami hip grip and a T-grip. Very secure, low profile.

In a Hume JIT in my front pocket. If I change my mind or circumstances, I can always put it on my belt, but I generally prefer the front pocket.

I've been toting mine in an Uncle Mike's pocket holster since I got it and it works great. Best $14 I've spent yet.

I carry my 2" model 37 in a DeSantis Nemisis pocket holster. It has a grippy outside and releases the gun very smoothly and easily. I think it was around nine dollars when I bought it.

I have a IWB for a J frame I would be willing to send you if you are left handed.

I also use an Uncle Mike's pocket holster for my 649s and M38.
I think I spent $8 for it.

Thumbs up Good Choice

The 638 is my favorite J frame. I can't stuff a J frame in my jeans pocket without it being very obvious I have a gun in my pocket and the pockest aren't cut for that. I generally like an OWB holster and the Uncle Mikes nylon holster of that type is a decent and fairly cheap holster. Fobus also makes an inexpensive holster for J frames. The 638 is a very good choice.

The 638 (like all of the shrouded hammer models) requires some thought in holster selection. These revolvers do not permit typical retention devices (thumb-break, strap, etc) that usually are placed over the hammer area.

Security of the weapon should be on your priority list. For this model, probably the best means of providing for weapon retention is a very well-fitted holster that will grip the weapon snugly.

Best regards.

+1 on the DeSantis Nemisis. I sometimes use IWB and OWB holsters with it, but the 638 usually goes with me in my pants pocket Nemisis holster if I'm wearing nice clothes with the shirt tucked in. If I can wear a holster, I have a 640-1 that I like to carry, but the grip on the 640 is bigger and it won't fit in my pocket as well as the 638. You have3 an awesome gun. Good luck.

I carry my J frame IWB at 1:00.

I use a modified uncle mikes so it rides a little lower. I like it (the holster) because its not too bulky and very secure.
