Pancake holster ?

Before I start I would like ask that you forgive me of my ignorance as I'm a newcomer where leather holsters are concerned (compared to the seasoned vets here) Anyway I am giddy as all get out, as the Silver Dollar holster I ordered from Simply Rugged for my S&W M60 no dash arrived in the mail less than 40 min ago. Of course just like the holster I got from him for my S&W 4" HB M10, it is stiff as 2x4 and feels like kydex not leather. Anyway I'm currently sporting it around the house trying to break it in, while occasionaly drawing the gun from the holster and reholstering (the revolver is unloaded) While doing this I have noticed some differnces between the two holsters. With the Sour Dough while I was using the same proceedure the smooth leather on the interior became scared from the edges of the cylinder and thicker barrel. The leather also has conformed somewhat to the M10's Heavy Barrel. What I mean by that is the corners of the rib on top of the barrel basically put a groove on either side of the holster in pretty short time.

I also remember the edges of the cylinder on that M10 scaring the leather interior of that holster in fairly short order as well. In comparison the M60 appears to hardly do anything to the interior on this holster. Except where the edges of the cylinder contacts the leather when reholstering. For those here that have Pancake style holsters for both of these revolvers experienced this as well?

Under my Christmas Tree, as I type, are two pancake holsters from Simply Rugged. I ordered them, but my wife snagged them and wrapped the box, so I have not seen them. One for a J-frame 640-1 and the other is for a 686P. I will try to remember to post something back regarding the inside wear of the leather when I try them out. I have been waiting patiently for a few weeks now...we may open the gifts with our three sons after our church's midnight communion service tomorrow night, so early, early on Friday morning I should have some new leather. I would love to see a pic of your 640-1 in the Sinply Rugged holster.I have a 640-1 also and don't have any OWB holsters at all.

Sorry, I forgot to answer the original question. I guess both guns scrape on the inside of the leather, but thats the same with all the leather holsters I have. These are very firm and thick like you said, and it may be more pronounced, but I think after a few months of wearing it, and breaking it in, then you won't notice it anymore. Mine feel very secure in the holsters. I was afraid to have a pancake holster for the 686P with the hammer exposed...I didn't want to accidentally cock the hammer when carrying it. However, there are two things that keep it from cocking while in the holster...first, the hammer is fairly well covered up by the leather and it's hard to get to. Second, the holster presses on the sides of the cylinder and prevents it from spinning, which in turns prevents the hammer from cocking. So, it is very secure in there without the thumb strap. Also, I wore the smaller one all day yesterday and ran over to our parent's houses and I never felt so comfortable with a holster. They really conform to the shape of my body and I forget that I'm wearing the gun. Great product! B

I too have one for my J snubbies and a 3-inch K version that also handles my 2.5-inch 66-2 and my 3-inch 65-5. Simply Rugged is a good bang for the buck, are nice people to deal with and have quick delivery. I'm still breaking mine in. They are stout and well made!

Engine18 +1 on being stout. The holster I got for the M10 is almost a year old and it is still stiff and as tight as the day it arrived. Bassoneer I noticed the same when thing when wearing my J frame with this holster. The K frame though is a little different. It is out of the way but I still know it is there.

I got a Simply Rugged "Loaded Pancake" for my 686+ for Christmas and it is awesome! My wife ordered it for me exactly how I wanted it. I'd like to order a matching one for my 19-4.

Just ordered a Simply Rugged pancake for my Alaskan and another for a 2.5" 66. Chesty Puller straps for the big'n, IWB straps for the 66.

Can hardly wait.
