Not allowed to carry at work
Hi folks, I am new to this forum, and have only had my CCW since Dec 09. I am trying to get used to carrying, but I am not allowed to carry at work. It is a shame, because I work in retail where we sell firearms, and many of our customers carry. I am pretty much a homebody, and don't feel the need to carry at home, so I don't ever really carry unless I am going out to the "big city". I do keep my S&W 637 in the center console of my car since I live out in the boonies and never know what I will come across in my daily drive... I would love to hear your thoughts and suggestions.

Well..... If you can't carry at work then I guess you can't carry at work. I would say that most people can't. Thankfully I can.
Look at it from a business perspective. Can you imagine the liability? Or the cost of insurance? Then there are people that are not adequately trained. Could you trust them to make the right decision if things got bad? Or would their gun simply be taken away from them and used against you?
I work with a few people that have guns but don't know anything about the legal use of deadly force. I would not trust their judgement or aim! Consequently, they don't bring guns to work. I considered making a handgun available to us while working in some kind of lock box. I trust these co workers but not with a gun due to lack of training. I don't need them to shoot me or an innocent bystander.
The owner where I work would lose his business and reputation. And I would be out of work.

I can understand the liability issue. I just don't seem to have much if any opportunity to carry. I know it will take time and practice. I haven't really found a holster that works well for me either. I have an S&W 637CT and a Ket-Tec PF-9. So far a Smart Carry seems to work best for me, comfort wise, but I am pretty slow on the draw and even slower re-holstering it.
I guess I am just a rookie having a tough time getting started.

I have not been "allowed" to carry at work by company policy for the last 40 years by 3 or 4 different companies. With the current mind set of digruntled employees to go in a place of employment and "get even" makes glad I did and still do.
I have carried every day in a professional & managerial or in consulatant environment in some way or means as I will not be anywhere unarmed at anytime.
Get good training such as Thunder Ranch or Gunsite and keep your training up to date.
Concealed means concealed and if you don't talk about it and dress around the weapon no one will ever notice.
Having a good job and obeying some rules doesn't mean squat if you are dead.

Thats nice and all but some of us have to wear company uniforms to work. I have tried every manner of concealed carry and nothing works. I am extremely physically active on the job so normal methods of concealed carry are out of the question. It's much easier for those of you that dress casually or wear a suit and tie.
Sure, it don't mean squat if your dead. But the reality of the matter is, if you get caught and your fired for carrying a gun at work try explaining that at your next job interview.
It's a difficult descision but either way you have to a chance.

The best way I found to carry in tight fitting pants such as work pants or blue jeans is with a good leather pocket holster and a .380 KelTec, Ruger LCP or a Walther PPK.
I always tried to wear one waist size bigger pants than I needed so the legs were a little looser.
But to each his own to answer to the carrying at work question. I don't hold it against anyone for their descision.

I have a concealed weapons permit. I carry everyday even though the sign on the wall says not to. Once I had a car stolen off the property, if my gun was in the glove box, now the car thief has my loaded gun!
Only a few know that I have a little 38 on me or nearby. Keep it undercover 100% of the time. Out of sight and concealed just like your supposed too.
The sign on the wall makes "them" feel better about disgruntled employees.

My life is worth more than my job. There's always a way to conceal a handgun. Ankle carry is slow but in a discruntled employee situation you'll most likely have time to get at it. Even 380 handguns can disappear in a pocket.

I am also active. I carry to work, then when able, I lock it in one of my toolbox drawers until I go home. So I guess, I'm unarmed on the job, but have it nearby, then on me when I come and go from work. I won't leave it in my car.
Like you I can't hide it all day without someone being concerned that "he has a gun!"

I've thought about carrying at work, which would be in direct disobedience to the policies and procedures, but I just need my job too bad. I know I could do it and not be made (a Smartcarry is a wonderful thing) but I can't take the chance of anything happening.
Say what you will about civil disobedience and the like, but in today's world good jobs are too hard to come by and I'm pretty pleased with mine. Thankfully in this state an employer can't bar you from keeping a gun in your vehicle (except in certain instances) so mine rides in with me, stays in the truck then goes back in my pocket when I leave.

Tiny pocket pistols in pocket holsters...
Unless you are an exotic dancer... nobody should ever know.

Man, I'm glad that I'm the boss. I would be pissed if I couldn't carry at work. The fedex and UPS drivers were a little nervous when the business first moved here because I just carry open when I'm in the building.

.....and I bet they don't mind at all now. The UPS driver where I work always thinks the gun projects I'm working on are cool. I think he's, at the least, mildly interested in firearms. I'll have to see if I can get him to ratchet things up a notch.

I will not say where I work but it's a very secure facility, plant sites are even worse. To get caught carrying, or even entering with a firearm would be a very bad thing - for me. More than a lost of a job and a career.
However I have to just die laughing when I enter a secure area. Security, armed to the teeth, makes me get out of the vehicle while they do their search. Sometimes they do bomb swipes. However, security usually consisting of one or two guards, are so intend on searching the vehicle they never watch the driver or passengers. They never search the drivers or passengers. Not to smart if you ask me.

My job has a no weapons policy period, that includes knives and any object that could be used as one.
As mentioned my life is worth more than my job, and I have been carrying a pistol for a while now to said job. Shoulder holster saves a lot of trouble, can't be seen through shirt or otherwise.
I work a night shift, which gets robbed more than any other shift and at one point last year 4 locations around me were robbed, it would have been 5 but one clerk in fact pulled his side arm and the guy bolted out the door. The clerk lost his job, but the thief was also caught shortly after by police.

My company has a no weapons policy. I work at multiple locations and travel there in a company vehicle. Inner city spells trouble for me if I'm not aware at all times. I keep a large wrench or tool at every door of my van and stash my 5906 in a well-hidden spot. The van is alarmed with a remote annunciator on my key fob. So I'm alerted to anybody messing with my ride.
My supervisor knows I'm CCW but assumes the "don't ask don't tell" posture. The properties I visit mostly have the smash and grab type of crime, but I have been approached by gang bangers before. They backed off when I displayed an 18" long steel wrench. Being aware is the first step to not becoming a victim.

Thanks for all the input. I am ordering a tuckable holster from Cross Breed Holsters that I am going to try. I have used my Smart Carry a few times at work; maybe it takes more getting used to, or maybe I need looser jeans... It wasn't very comfortable. I sure hate to lose my job over violating company policy. When I work late, I always walk out with the closing manager to my car where my .38 is waiting. We are in a small country town where violent crime is not much of a problem, but I don't want to be unarmed when it starts!
