Default CCW badge..is it legal or smart?

I see these official looking badges in Gold, Silver and Gunmetal finishes on the internet and was wondering if they are legal to carry as long as you have a CCW permit?
Also do you think this is a good idea?
The places that sell them throw out a scenario like where a private citizen with a permit has just shot and killed or wounded a bad guy, there is lots of confusion from other patrons and the police are coming in the door. Someone yells "he has a gun" and the CCW holder shouts that he has a license and shows his shiny badge.
Do any of you own such a badge? How do you carry it?

Have any of you drawn a gun on someone in public and what were the circumstances that followed. Thank you for your reply's. Bob

I see only one POSSIBLE advantage of one of these things. If you clip it onto your belt next to your holster and someone happens to get a peek at your rig and also sees the badge, they might not freak and call the real cops. Of course, if you are doing it right they shouldn't see your rig. Any presentation of it as a police badge can get you into deep kimchee and a cop having a bad day might get unpleasant about it on general principles, especially if he doesn't like armed private citizens.

Generally speaking I vote NO.

MAG-NUM:

A badge like that takes "concealed" out of CCW, imo. Low key is the way to go, no tip-offs, nobody knows, no problems.

What Sebago sez....
The only people I have seen wearing such badges were cop wannabes at gunshows.

I was trying to think of an appropriate response while reading the other threads to this post and this one says it all.

Someone whom would carry something like this is cut from the same cloth as volunteer fire fighters whom put emergency lights on their personal vehicles. I appreciate the fire fighters for the job they do, but let's grow up! LEO's aside, the last badge most of us needed was plastic and came with a set of plastic six shooters and plastic spurs which were proudly worn with our pants tucked into the top of our cowboy boots to church.

ROFLMAO! I agree!!! Why people spend ANY $ on this kind of garbage is beyond all reasonable comprehension.

Sad part about it is that I've run into private investigator "legmen" (not real PI's...just rather lowpaid oft low IQ'd "assistants") carry them and flash them when they get confronted about why they are on private property and ducked down on the front seat with a small video camera like a periscope above the dash of their car. (and one occassion where one guy stuck a kojak light on the roof before he did it!)

Under certain conditions, souldn't this brand you as impersonating a peace officer?

Having that badge would put you at about the same level as the rent a cop at the mall.

Here's something to consider: when I was off-duty, I never had my badge. I had my ID buried in my wallet, where it wouldn't be seen. It was there to get me out of speeding tickets. If you end up dumping someone and you're in civilian attire, you'll be ordered to the ground no matter what's in your hand. Finding that "badge" on you will probably complicate any problems you already have after the shooting. Don't carry it.

There have been many threads on this subject on many forums over the years and the general consensus has always been, "IT'S A REALLY BAD IDEA!"

Seems to be an unequivocal and unanimous decision against this practice. And if I ever run into anyone thinking of doing this I will lead them directly to this post.Bob

They try to catch the eye in their ads in gun magazines with the line "This badge may save your life!". Yeah, I suppose if you run out of ammo you could throw it really hard at the bad guy. I would hate to be in an iffy shooting carrying one of these. Prosecutors in criminal cases and plaintiffs attorneys in civil suits would have a field day.

The name Gecko45 comes to mind!

It's all been pretty much said already. Dumb idea that will get you into more trouble than it will get you out of. I would have a very hard time not laughing uncontrollably at anyone that I saw carrying one.

"CWP" Maam! I'm here to help!"

Be advised MAG NUM, that I am not in any way making fun of you. Just the idea of someone actually carrying one of those! BTW, welcome to the forum. It is good to ask questions in places like this. Some very knowledgeable people here, who have been around the block a time or two!

If they were a good idea to have, they would be available through the Agency issuing the permit to carry, along with the ID card(s).
