Default Glock 20 vs. S&W 19/66--which would you carry into the woods?

I am wondering how everyone feels about the Glock 20 vs. the K Frame Smiths for woods carry (with .357 rounds). Lately I have seen more and more people leaving their K (or L) frame .357s at home in favor of 10MM Glocks. Of course, the 10MM does not compare to the .44 magnum, but it does fairly well to the .357, and here in North Carolina, it works perfectly fine against what we fear the most--cougars and two-legged predators. I personally would not want to shoot any bear with anything less than an RPG but I have seen Black Bears taken with 10MM here. I have also seen taken (and taken myself) wild boar and alligator with the 10MM. And those are nasty.

Thoughts?

Well, you're probably going to find many people (especially on this forum, of course) who have a real preference for a S&W revolver over any Glock.

But I believe I would prefer the Glock 20. I own 2 of them, and they are excellent shooters. Assuming you are loading full-bore 10mm loads, I would prefer the 15+1 capacity of the Glock, plus the quicker reload, over the 6 of the S&W. Of course, finding real full power 10mm loads might be the tricky part. They're out there...DoubleTap.com, for one. Finding full power .357 loads is obviously much simpler.

Over the years i have always relied on my 686 4 inch in the woods, and i bought my first k-frame 66 4 inch this year(untested).I also just bought a G29 10mm(untested).Out of the current batch,i would still carry my 686 more often only because i have had one since 1994 and i could trust my life on them.

which is easier to conceal of the 3 guns you have mentioned, the k-frame.
which one is cheaper to own,G20 used for $350.00 and even lower.
which one holds more,g20 =15 rounds VS 6-8
which one is more accurate,hands down the S&W 66 4 inch -686 4 inch.

Now for the power of the 10mm VS .357 mag

The heaviest and deepest penetrating 10mm in existence! Will create a large deep wound channel for hunting or woods protection!
Caliber : 10mm
Bullet : 230gr Wide Flat Nose Gas Check Hardcast
Ballistics : 1120fps/ 641 ft./lbs. - Glock 20

These hardcast LBT-style bullets create wide DEEP wound channels for hunters and those concerned with woods protection.
Caliber: 357 Magnum
Bullet: 200gr. Wide Flat Nose Gas Check Hardcast
Ballistics: 1200fps / 4" Ruger GP-100/ 640 ft.lbs.

Both are from the double tap ammo site.I'm going to buy both types of ammo when i hit the woods this year and i'll probably carry all 3 guns as i go in the woods for defence purposes,as i can't hunt with G29(to short)

Well, I don't own a Glock anymore (G30) so I guess I would take, and have taken a S&W .357 Magnum. I really like my 65-5, 3-inch w/heavy 158gr for packing, (my version of a "kit gun"), but if I'm running real heavy loads, my M28 4-incher works just fine!

Opps.I'm sorry. The question was Glock 20 or 19/66! My 66, of course!

But I REALLY like my 65-5, 3". It's my overall favorite!

Glock 20 but I wouldn't feel under gunned with a Model 66 in the lower 48.

It depends on the woods. In my woods I'd probably carry a K frame, not necessarily even a magnum. But my woods don't have lions, bears or boars, oh my! We have deer, turkey, coyotes, foxes, hawks and feral kitty kats.

I do have a Glock 20 and did choose it over all my beloved S&W revolvers when I had to go to the west side of town to pick up the grand daughter. I would have rather gone into woods with lions, bears and boars.

Anyway, your decision should be the same as if you were going into the woods to intentionally hunt all the animals you listed. Match your gun and ammo to the game, which would you choose?

My S&W19 is a safe queen promised to my oldest daughter when she is of age. So it has a place of honor in the gun safe.

90% of the time my choice would be the G20 for several reasons.

#1 I shoot semi-autos better than revolvers (this is the overriding factor that you should consider as well).

#2 My Glocks are working guns. If I beat up a vintage S&W, I'll be very upset. If I ding a Glock, it just adds a little character.

The 10% of the time I carry a revolver, it is always a .357 magnum, and is the choice when I am going in a "snakey" area. I hate snakes. I really hate snakes. I mean, like REALLY hate snakes. Then, it is loaded with a Barbers Pole cylinder-full of snake shot and hollowpoints. Did I mention I don't like snakes?

When I choose the revolver, it is either a Performance Center L-Comp (love the moon clips), or an old GP-100 that is an absolute tackdriver. I don't mind dinging the Ruger either.

Oh yeah, I second the Double Tap ammo. Great stuff. I'm also fortunate to have a small supply of the old Winchester Silvertips for the 10mm. If I ever find any old Norma, it'll go home with me too.

The Glock 20/21 frame is right on the outer edge of what's comfortable for me to shoot one handed.

I've got several K frame S&Ws which I really like.

I'd go with the 19/66.

I have both, and carry both. It comes down to what I am wearing and what I am hunting. My everyday carry is a Glock 20, with some custom features. I also depending on where I am going and manner of dress go with a S&W revolver. Basic question to ask yourself is what you shoot well and have the most faith in.

I've killed two "cougars" (both called to very close range with predator calls, and shot with a rifle), and have helped others bag other lions, but despite having spent years in high quality cougar habitat, have never felt threatened by them under any normal circumstances, and so dismiss concern about "attacks" --- you'd ought to be much more worried about human malefactors, and prepared to deal with them, first and foremost. Any weapon capable of stopping a large specimen of homo sapiens will do as well for felis concolor.

A Model 66 is what joins me in the woods. It just feels right.

Yes, the 10mm and the 357 can have similar ballistic numbers; but, the recoil from the 357 in a K frame will hurt. So while the first shot is good, the second through sixth will probably be wild.

That's why I carry a 610! 10mm in a wheel gun!

I don't own a large frame Glock because that grip simply does not work for my hands. And the K frames have several good grip designs that do work for me.

Otherwise, fifteen rounds of 10 mm, which originally was compared to the .41 Magnum, would work fine.

The right revolver grips make a huge difference in recoil and accuracy.

In spite of my long love affair with S&W, and because I would hate to tear up a nice 19 or 66 (especially a 19), I take the Glock 20 every time. I load mine with Buffalo Bore 180 gr Gold Dot JHC 1350fps for 782 ft/lbs. 46 rounds enough ammo for me to run away from anything!!!

Good points!

I gotta get me a 610. I say that everytime they are available, but I have never done it. The best accessory for a Glock 20 is either a Glock 29 or a S&W 610!

Glock 20, hands down, with 200gr. bullets. Due to reducing case capacity, efficiency of the 10mm pretty much tops out with 200s, with 230s taking up too much room. The "woods" where I sometimes walk contain the occasional feral hog or ten. I want both the thump and the magazine capacity. Both my 20s have grip reductions, which vastly improves their handling. Now, if I'm also carrying a rifle or carbine, like my little Marlin .357, I might opt for the 19/66 for ammo compatibility. However, I would not shoot my carbine loads in a K-frame, so as we say here, there you go...
