Question Am I crazy? What's the largest handgun you CC??

Allright, I am getting a 627 with a 5" barrel. I understand that a 4" N-Frame is on the big end of sane carry guns

But I am thinking the gun would carry and hide fairly well with one of these: Galco holsters; Holsters; Gun holster, pistol holsters, western holsters, shoulder holsters, leather holster and Glock holsters

I currently carry a fullsize M&P9. . .. sometimes a PM9 Kahr, but rarely

I did the calculations, My loaded M&P9 with an extra mag only weighs 1/3 LB less than the 627 loaded with 8 extra rounds. . . .for reference my wallet weighs 1/2-3/4 lb depending on the day Hell the $3-$5 worth of loose change in my pocket would more than make up the difference, guess I'll just have to use my change more

heres a better pic of a guy wearing it http://www.usgalco.com/HolsterPT3.as...05&CatalogID=4

That holster just looks 'comfortable' and concealable. . .

Default Big CCW....

During the Cooler Months of the year when I can wear a vest, I routinely carry either a fullsized Glock 22 or a SiG 220.

65-5, 3" is the largest, in a Sourdough OWB; sometimes 66-2, 2" or 64-2, 2" I'm too puny to CC my l-frames or M28! (usually my 638)

For a few years I carried a 4" Redhawk .45 Colt quite comfortably, even under just a T shirt in the summer. I tried two 5" N Frames, both inside the waistband and on the hip in a conventional holster. I never cared for the 5" barrel revolvers. Nowadays I still carry 3" and 4" N Frames. The N Frames and Redhawk are all carried in a single El Paso Street Combat holster.

Maybe not crazy, but... That is a lot of weight to lug around.

When I was younger I rarely left the house without my .45 Commander. These days, the 340PD seems a bit heavy. My heavier pistols are either in my desk drawer or the car. A chronic lack - in fact a life-long lack, now that I think of it - of anything pressing to shoot at has done this to me.

I'm not sure about that holster, but if it appeals to you, that's half the battle. If I were concerned about hiding that 627, I think there might be better holsters out there. Have you thought about a Summer Special, or something like that?

I carry a 5" full underlug 629 IWB all the time, plus a Taurus 605 .357 snub in the weakside front pocket, a NAA Black Widow .22 mag. in the strongside ft. pocket and a reload for the two bigger guns. Carry the guns you would want if you had to fight with them. My main IWB holster is a FIST 1A kydex/leather hybrid. If you get one, get it with the body shield. When the belt loops on a given pair of trousers would otherwise preclude carry at 3:30, I use a Milt Sparks VM-II, which is also an excellent holster. With big N frame guns the gun, holster, belt, and clothing must work in complete harmony with your body if you don't want to be "made". Don't skimp on the gunbelt!

I think it depends on your work/dress...sure, anyone can hide a 4 inch N frame with the right clothes, but I doubt most could go about their daily routine without anyone noticing it unless you work the freezer in a meat packing plant...I still don't know how Flop does it....

That's a good point, bro. I usually carry a 360 PD, or a P3AT (if the pants pockets are shallow) as a primary at work. When not working, I wear "the cannon". I'm not a huge guy. I'm 5'7" ~ 200 pounds with a stocky build. Think of a heavyweight weight lifter, a little fat, but heavily muscled (O.K. I'm no heavyweight lifter, but strong, my job is highly physical). I have a very broad chest. Add to that heavier fabric shirts, the braindeadness that being a former grunt entails (nothing feels heavy when you carried 80+ lbs. of ****) and the deeper concealment that IWB offers. It works. Then again, maybe no one says anything because they think it's a colostomy bag. LOL

I have carried a 6" 629-1.
I regularly carry a full size 1911.
I am currently carrying a 2 5/8" Astra Terminator in .44 Mag.

This 4" N frame carries well enough, and conceals easily under a light jacket, but a J frame sure feels a lot better to me.

Normally a 1911 is the largest handgun I carry. On a couple of special occasions I have carried my LAR Grizzly 45 WinMag or a Ruger RedHawk 44 Mag. Of course this was when I could wear a field jacket to cover them.

One time when I thought the extra firepower was needed I carried my CAR shorty 10.5" in a custom harness under my right arm.

Know a Federal agent that carries a pair of S&W 29's with 8 3/8' barrels.

My "work" / passion is Gunsmithing, I work full time at a smallish rural shop in NW Ohio, total 'concealment' isn't necessary at work

www.ottawaordnance.com thats me on the homepage!

Just wanted to see if ya'll are as cuckoo as I am, I just love the feel of an N-Frame in the hand, can't help but smile

I carried a 4" S&W 500 in an IWB holster for a while...just to see how it did. It wasn't too bad but I am a large fellow...not as large now as I was then since I have lost about 120 lbs. Eventually, I figured that much weight to carry for 5 shots of artillery shells just didn't make sense. The biggest these days is a steel Government Model 1911 and a .45 Colt Mountain Gun.

For me, a big part of this is mental - after a long hard day, just looking at a big gun seems tiring. So to keep myself straight, I remember that having lost 5 to 10 pounds from my gut makes it easier to carry 2 to 3 pounds of gun. And like posted above, our soldiers fighting in the sandbox are carrying 60 to 160 pounds of gear in that 130+ degree heat. That alone makes me feel better about my 2 to 3 pounds of gear.

A 5" steel auto or 4" N frame works for me.

Thinking of "little lizzie" helps too ( http://www.americanhandgunner.com/CGC705.html).

The biggest that I've ever carried was my Smith and Wesson Sigma. I don't carry it that much since I have two other guns that can fit in my pocket. Now my Sigma kind of serves as my work gun.

686+, 2 1/2" snubby in a smart carry holster. It is a little on the heavy side, but the Smart Carry provides good deep concealment, and although it takes a little getting used to, works well and isn't all that uncomfortable.

Up to a 5" N-Frame.

It's up to the bad guy to guess if it's a 625, 610 or a 629.

...so you have to ask yourself, do you feel lucky? Well do ya' punk?

It's all about the belt for me. Right belt...big gun. Clothing-wise, I just have non-tapered shirts and lots of forward cant to the holster to prevent printing.

Over the years; 1911s, 4" K and L frame .357s, Taurus and Beretta 92 style 9mms, Glock 17s and 34s, Glock 20.

A good holster and belt are important for big guns to work for CCW.

I used to carry a Dirty Harry Special in a shoulder holster. It's what I had, so it's what I carried. It's been a few years, but I've still go it.

a good holster and appropriate belt negate much of the "too big to carry" argument.

and for the "comforting not comfortable" guy, he really should invest in a descent holster.

Since 1976 my standard EVERYDAY concealed carry has been a 1911, in 45 ACP, a 4" or a 6.5" Mod 29, or [because of "regulations" for a few years] a Glock 17.

Now that I am retired, I have gone back to the 1911 or the S&W 44 Mag...

I am wearing a S&W 44 Mag Mountain Gun in a Milt Sparks Summer Special as I type this...

I hate IWB; have tried several styles of holsters over the years, but just can't go for it.
I wore a gun belt for so many years when I was working I don't like any extra weight/bulk there now, even a cellphone.
The largest I carry is a Glock 27 in a DeSantis Nemesis pocket holster.

A 4" model 629-5 in a Bianchi 111 Cyclone, usually in crossdraw configuration, but on occasion as the strongside rig. Or a 6" model 629-1 in a IWB rig. I really have no problem hiding either of these revolvers, as in winter I usually have on a coat, and in summer I am usually wearing a short-sleeve shirt loose and unbuttoned over some sort of T-shirt. Don't have any pictures of these on my photo account yet.

Sometimes, I wear my model 10-6 in my own handstitched leather:

Sometimes I feel nostalgic and put on a SAA in my own handstitched crossdraw leather. The 1st Generation 4.75" Colt SAA in .38WCF:

or the 3.5" barreled Cimarron Thunderer in .45LC:

But no matter where I go, this is always in the truck:

In Tennessee, if you hold a valid Handgun Carry Permit (we are not required to go concealed, even though it is probably wiser to do so), you can carry a long arm in your vehicle provided there is no round in the chamber. Doesn't matter if it is a semi-auto rifle or shotgun, a bolt rifle, a pump shotgun, a lever action, or a single shot shotgun. Magazines can be fully loaded - just no round in the chamber... The long arm can be within reach of the permit holder... So my little 18.25" barreled 1902 Iver Johnson Champion single shot (purchased for $25 at an antique store) rides between my seat and the trucks center console, with the first round sitting in the cup holder. Since I can't take the shotgun out to go with me when I leave the truck, I cover it up with a towel. If it gets stolen, I'm out $25 plus the cost of my ammo in the handstitched butt cuff.

People may laugh at my carrying a Single Action for defense... But I can shoot them accurately and can do so from the hip (just as fast as I can with any of my other pistols or revolvers). They are natural "pointers", and I was taught at an early age how to "point shoot" a single action by my father. It has turned out to be a pretty appreciated skill, especially when I am teaching "force on force" drills to our LE folks. They really don't like the fact that I am "burning" them with those 30 grain airsoft pellets at 350FPS from 7-10 feet when we do the "interview gone wrong" drills. But you train like you fight, or you'll fight like you train...

Regards,
Mike

I have carried my S&W 4506-1 in a G&G Gold Line pancake holster before. Made me feel a little Vic Mackey like.

My everyday carry is a SW40VE. I have carried a 4" .357 just to see if I could. Then I did the math - revolver =6 rounds, Sigma =14 rounds. The Sigma is flatter, more compact, has more firepower and works just like my revolver.

Well its like this my S&W 442 with some .38special Buffalo Bore ammo that goes 1040fps with the 2" Barrel puts out 379 lbs ft at the muzzle and weighs 18 ozs loaded and including a front pocket holster is my carry gun year around. This is a self defense gun and not a combat pistol so comfort is what I go for year around. If its with 10yds or closer whatever is hit with this round is going down. I shoot 130grs for practice. 158gr LSWCHP can't get no better.

I used to carry 6" N frame in a shoulder rig in cool weather . I carried my 4" N frame in a inside the waistband no problem with loose shirts . I now carry a 1911 in a Milt Sparks in a owb for all but the hottest days .

I used a homemade summer special on those days outter clothes must be light .

These folks make the original Dirty Harry shoulder rig . I have to have one , even if I don't need to pack my N frame concealed . The rig is so nice I just might buy one to wear with my jammies while watching Dirty Harry over and over .

I am one of those people who likes to push the envelope, just to see if I can. And yes I can, and sometimes do.
At a towering 5'4" and a whopping 125 pounds, I've surprised myself at what I can hide.
My carry options vary from a Model 36(2") to the Model 65,(3") the 686+(3"), the Model 29(4"), the Kimber Pro Crimson Carry II(4").
I can hide any of them, but the Model 29 isn't practical for me until I find a different holster, the grip is just too high to be able to draw it, with my short torso, the grip ends up in my armpit. Suggestions are welcome, please.
Just to prove it could be done I carried hubby's GP100(6") all day, he had no idea what I had been carrying until we got undressed at bedtime. The look on his face was priceless, as he hollered, "hey that's mine"
All of these will hide wearing just my normal jeans and sweatshirt or jeans and t-shirt. If you want to carry a large gun, it can be done. A good holster, a good belt and some determination will do it.

When the situation calls for it, I can CC a Glock 20 or a 3" 629.

I often carry a 5" 627 or 629. I sometimes carry a 5 1/2" Ruger Blackhawk in .45LC. We have hungry bears here.

I don't carry, but I have carried on a couple of occasions.

I once carried a 7 1/2" .45 Colt Blackhawk stuck down the back of my jeans, through a commercial airport and out on to the ramp, no less. Of course, this was long before 9/11 and we had not yet gone berserk with ineffectual security measures.
