Default What do you carry in the woods when open carry is not possible?

Other than dropping a 629 or any other revolver in a backpack or a Wilderness Safepacker, something like that, what do you carry when you can't open carry?

Why wouldn't you be able to open carry in the woods?

I usually slip one of my M649s, or my M38 in a pocket.
Sometimes even while open carrying a larger gun.

I've never heard of such a thing. I always open carry in the woods, sometimes a large handgun and sometimes a long gun.

Open carry is always possible in the outback if one has a hunting license here in California. However I typically carry my S&W 329PD in the field.

In California open carry, even in the outback, can get you arrested, unless it is hunting you are doing. What you are hunting best be in season and you best have the gear and the license.

Wow, I did not know that. Looks like yet another reason to stay well away from the left coast.

I've never been any place that I could not open carry in the woods. If I couldn't open carry though, I'd probably carry either an M&P .40c or a Glock 27.

Hmm . . . depending on the season . . . concealed in some manner:

5" Colt Combat Elite .45 auto; chopped barrel (to 3 1/4") S&W Model 25-2 revolver, also in .45ACP; and many times . . . a 3" Kimber Ultra CDP .45 auto (lightweight officer's type).

Then, sometimes I've carried my 3" barreled Model 65-3 .357.

When nothing else can be concealed? My Model 37 Airweight snubbie in .38 Special in a pocket holster.

I usually carry as much gun as I can effectively and COMFORTABLY conceal in the woods . . . when it must be concealed.

Depends what and where the woods are. Personally around here about all you need to be concerned about in the woods are wolves and black bear and the occasional paranoid Meth lab worker or pot grower.

4" Mtn Gun loaded with 255 Keiths sitting over a charge of 16.0 grains of 2400 lit by a standard large pistol primer.

Wolf season opens again soon and I want a rug. Maybe two rugs.

I wasn't sure I understood the question, but since I live in grizzly country and when I go into the woods hiking/huckleberry-picking/backpacking I am cognizant of that fact, I typically carry a 4" 500 either in a belt holster or a fanny-pack.

Aside from not wanting to attract unwanted attention, CC is allowed in many national parks now while oc might not be.

If in bear country it would be a 44 Mag S&W Mountain Gun, either in a Milt Sarks Summer Special or a belt holster covered by a loose fitting shirt not tucked in. In colder weather I would carry it crossdraw in a Galco or Bainchi holster.

If no bears are around I might carry a Colt 1911, most likely a LW Commander in the same manner as stated above.

4" 629-1 in a Galco Summer Comfort. Awesome holster, if you have the waistband to spare.

Default CCW in the Woods

There are plenty of times in the out of doors when concealed carry is prudent.

If'n I need to be discreet and casual...But, well armed.

Model 24-3 3" & stout loads, shirt tail out.

But, I'm just saying.

Dave

If I'm working or hunting in the woods, it's a 21-4 with Keith loads ... crossdraw in a Bianchi Cyclone.

If I'm just wandering, it's my daily piece, a 642.

Yes Sir,
There are a few leather guys around these parts...
I cobble most of my own rigs up right here in the ranch saddle shop.
Just piddling 'round, to suit my fancy.

When out dove hunting, a 442 in a pocket holster (and five rounds of buck for the A-5). Our only problem would be two-legged - maybe a coyote.

I've used a Galco fanny pack many times for concealed carry that is still comfortable when backpacking, etc.

Around here my only worries would be people, so my .357 or my 9mms suffice, either will roll a coyote easily.

I have carried a Glock 34 quite a bit when out and about.

Been in the woods several times a year in many states. If I am in the woods, I will be carrying either a S&W Model 66, a S&W 1911 (45 cal) or a Glock model 22.

As to concealed carry in the woods, never been an issue. Just open carry.

But now I am curious about the new national park carry laws. Will it be open carry or concealed carry in these parks? Never thought about it until this thread inquiring about concealed carry in the woods.

Here in Tejas open carry in National Parks is verboten. Open carry here in National Forest land or state parks is also forbidden unless it's hunting season. Dont know for sure about the national forest land but I believe I read it a while back. Couldnt tell you about Corp of Engineers land. Concealed is perfectly okay of your a CCL holder.

Keltec PF-9 usually. Wearing a pack is kind of a PIA with IWB carry but it's doable.

Since GA is an open carry state I usually though just tote a Model 19 3"

Last time I was in the woods where open carry wasn't an option, I had my Sig P220 in .38 Super tucked away...

A 1006 stoked with Winchester Silvertips -- or a Glock 29 with the same load -- with a 640 -- bearing the hottest Corbon 125s possible and a Hogue 6000 grip -- in the right pocket as backup.

Ironically, in S.C., unless the law has changed recently, you can carry openly -- IF you're fishing -- both while fishing, to and from -- as long as you can PROVE you're fishing.

I've always wondered what would happen if I bought a Pocket Fisherman, put on my angler's vest -- and walked Main Street with my 1006 out there for the world to see -- and when the SWAT team was called, told them that I was headed to the City Pond...

I think I'm going with a 696 stoked with heavy Buffalo Bore or Double Tap heavy 255gr hardcast bullets in the woods and hollow points if in city. I planning on putting that on my ccw and serving dual purpose.

NC is odd for open carry. While it is legal, you also run the risk of being charged with "going armed to the terror to the people". It's a B.S. charge, but those type of charges still involve legal headaches just like real charges.

NM is open carry, but I still conceal when in the woods and apt to run into other people. The reason being, years ago I was open carrying a Ruger Blackhawk. No problem going up the trail. There was no one else around. But, coming down the trail later in the day I ran into several groups of people. One jack wagon in one of the groups started going on and on in a loud manner about the fact that I was OC'ing. That convinced me that OC was not my best option. I prefer not to draw attention to the fact that I'm ever armed. I'm not an attention seeker, and I don't want to alert a criminal to the fact that I'm armed.
Having said that, I usually carry on the belt with a shirt/jacket over the weapon, or carry in a shoulder holster with a shirt/jacket over the weapon.

I bought my smith 4 inch 29-8 specifically to hit the trails here in VA, we are allowed open carry but I prefer to carry this piece in a safariland trooper one holster, this rig allows me to carry high on the waist for comfort and I prefer to keep it under a shirt or a light jacket.

I have a model 29 Mountain Gun in an El Paso Saddlery Threepersons rig when I open carry, and a model 629 UDR in a Maxpedition bag when I want to hide it.

Even though it's legal to open carry, I prefer to hide my gun if I will be on trails frequented by other people, especially the 'Granola tree-hugger' types. No need to scare them or attract unwanted attention to myself.

I've got one of Keith44specials holsters just like the one in the last picture he posted. I am looking forward to seeing some more in the very near future. He does durn nice work.

I got a feelin' he's gonna be busy when he quits his day job and starts building custom rigs.

No problem open carry in the woods where I live, hunting season is open all year on some critters, coyotes,(rats, 2 or 4 legs & such).
My M27 or M21 will handle anything I come across I belive.

If I am on my deer lease I will open carry.

But even if it is legal to open carry, If I am on Public Grounds, where I will, or might be encountering people I do not know I prefer to carry concealed.

I open carry my 329PD when in the woods, unless it's going to be very wet, then it's my Glock 23.
