Default New York State gun laws

Does anyone know if NYS has a non-resident ccp? I can't seem to find much on the subject without thumbing through pages of legal jargon.

I was born and raised in rural upstate NY, where my family still resides. When I go to visit, do I have to unload and lock it up in the trunk when I cross the state line?

Thanks

NY does not recognize nor have reciprocity with any State, and does not issue non-resident licenses.
Don't bring it here if you plan on staying for even a day. If passing thru, you can keep it unlocked in the trunk.

NY does not honor permits from other states (even those that recognize NY permits). More importantly, it is unlawful even to possess a handgun in NY without a permit, so you'd be looking at serious problems if you bring one along on a visit.

Hello-

As a recent transplant from NYC, (lived there as a "closet gun fan" for 35 years) to Washington state, all I can tell you is: for the citizen in NYS...the 12 gauge is king. At least you can still own a shot gun in NYS.

I consider my old hometown about as draconian & backward as you can get when it comes to its gun laws.

Just my opinion of course, but you can bet the crooks & the cops are armed...leaving Joe Citizen S.O.L

Safe travels & say hello to the East Coast for me.

Do not confuse NYS with NYC

NYS is ok with gun laws as compared to "the City"

I moved upstate 10 years ago from Astoria Queens.
had my Full CCW for 7 years now no problem
no permit required for Rifles or Shotguns up here

I too have relatives in both New York & New Jersey. No reciprocity in either state. Even locked in your car while visiting is illegal.

Gun laws. I don't know whether NJ is notably worse than any other state. They all have their pros and cons. The pros I can do without, and I suppose some let out more cons than others, but the practical effect on me seems not to vary.

Handgun laws are tough here in New Jersey. First step is to get a firearm purchaser i.d. card, then a permit to purchase for every single handgun you buy. After obtaining an FID, no permit needed for long guns. You have to apply for handgun permits through your local PD or State Police. The wait from the time you apply, to actually having permits in hand can range from 30 days to 6 months. They are valid for 3 months, and we now have the "one handgun purchase per month" law.

You can forget privacy with regard to your place of employment since the police contact them every time you apply. You also need two personal references with every application.

We in NJ must be vigilant when transporting, even to the range. No guns and ammo travel in the same bag. I could go on but then.....I'll eat up way too much bandwidth.

You folks in NY and NJ need to file suits in US Court demanding your 2nd Amendment rights....I cant wait to try out HR 218 to see if I can really carry in NY.....I dont plan on getting stopped by the cops but If I do I will be armed and I will have my Department credentials with me.......even before HR 218 I had to go to a seedy part of Jersey City, NJ (like the whole town) in a warehouse district, under the expressway....I was definitely armed...I had to transport stored merchandise to the airport for shipment back to Florida. There were numerous unsavory characters and it was lonely down there. I looked at the cell phone and there was no signal because of all the steel.. I was glad to be armed...Nothing happened but I was still glad just in case.

The several times I was in NYC I was treated VERY well by the NYPD. I've been there both on and off-duty and later, retired (LAPD). No issues if you're an active-duty or retired copper.

If you are, in fact, an active duty LEO that's all you need pursuant to LEOSA. Period.

Be safe.

Default Hopefully this is NOT off topic

But I came upon this link, while doing a search on HR 218 and found this interesting and humorous. I did not read the whole article, but the part that gets me is the part where if it was posted like they say in this post "Do NOT bring any weapons" than even if your carrying a badge why in names sake would you bring your weapon.

To me if the FED's said NO , than its NO.

I'm just saying thats all, not arguing and not stealing thread nor trying to upset anyone.
