.45acp CC
How many of you CC a .45, acp? When I'm not lusting after a 12-4 2-inch for CC, I often think about carrying a larger caliber handgun.
With the weight difference aside, I'm thinking about a .45 acp. A smallish S&W (CS45?) or maybe a G---k 30 or 36! What say you?

I have, and still sometimes do carry .45 ACP pistols, all 1911 designs of one kind or another. Until I caught the 9x23 bug, I almost always carried a .45 as my primary. Just yesterday bought an XDm .45, and if I can find a holster with enough tilt to conceal the long butt, I'll carry it some.
If I were going to go to a Glock .45, it would not be a 36. People seem to love them or hate them; I fit the latter group. Unpleasant recoil, thick slide, low capacity. What's not to hate?

How about the G30? (I know, wrong forum!) I see a few CS45s around, but I wonder about spare mags and holsters.

One of my best friends, who owns and can afford all manner of 1911s, carries and swears by his Glock 30. I own a 29 and occasionally carry it. (Same gun in 10mm.) Brother Mas Ayoob thinks highly of the G-30. They are fat little devils, though, top and bottom. My 29 and both my 20s have had grip reductions done, which helps, but they are still thick.

I have had a CS45 for several years and it's my CC when wearing a cover garment of some kind. For times when shirt is tucked in and no cover I have my snubby in front pocket.
Some of my pants allow front pocket carry of the CS45 but most don't.
I like my CS45 but my other choice would be a Glock 30 with the 10 round mags.

I regularly carry a s&w 1911 pro series compact (3" barrel) and a sig p245. They are a bit larger than my s&w j-frame or a small 9mm 1911 (springfield emp), but not to the point that it makes concealment a problem.

I regularly CC my PC Shorty 45 during summer months. I use a Bianchi IWB and it works well, even under a T-shirt.
The Shorty 45 is about as thin and light weight as my 3913.
In the winter I CC my duty 4566. I use a G&G pancake for a Sig 220. Regards 18DAI.

I regularly carry a Sig P220 in a pancake holster in in front of the right hip. It conceals well for me but I am 6'2" and 220 lbs. I carry it because its the .45 acp pistol that I shoot the best with. Being an old veteran, I like the .45 acp for self defense. I also carry a 5" Kimber Raptor at times. I find that I just shoot those guns better than the little .45's so the additional size and weight are worth the trouble.

I' m so spoiled carrying a J-frame all the time, but I'm thinking about options. Back in the day. I worked for an organization that issued G30s and we CCd them a lot but it did seem a bit bulky.
I'm thinking .44 spcl. too, but not much light-weight sidearms available. And I'm NOT sold on Charter Arms!

All winter long I carry a full size S&W 1911. I'm 6'4" and 206 pounds and have no trouble concealing it in a belt holster. This year I'll be alternating it with my new S&W 625 Performance Center revolver. I think it will be a little harder to conceal.

I carry a full size S&W 1911 and think it is the best gun ever made. Since I have an assortment of guns made by virtually every major maker, that is a strong statement.
it is comfortable to carry, extremely accurate, a lot less recoil than the Glock, thinner and looks nicer as well.
A person can carry any avg size gun if they want. CC always poses problems in clothing and people need to adjust to the gun they want to carry.

Carry a Sig RCS 1911, 4.25 inch barrel and holds 7+1. Also a Kimber ultra carry II a 3 inch 45. My S&W is a full size 1911 and is a little obvious. I'm 5-10 198 pounds.

Although it is generally a house gun (actually a basement gun to be specific) I have carried my Model 457 IWB on a few occasions.
I have a friend who carries a G30. It's a great shooter... and really not much chunkier than my G27.. only 2.5mm wider. The G30 is 1.27 inches wide, and the G36 is 1.13 inches wide... I'd go with the G30.
My Girlfriend's father carries a Taurus Millennium Pro .45. It's 6.125 inches long and 1.25 wide. Holds 10 in the mag. I haven't fired it but he loves it.

I carry my 457 as CC of choice whether it be IWB or OWB as long as what I'm wearing allows for the concealment. It's extremely easy to hide, and not very heavy at all. The times the 457 does not work a Bersa .380 takes it's place.

Everything considered, Power, shootability, carryability, reloadability, I think a 1911 Light Weight Commander, in 45 ACP, is the best choice, for someone trained how to use it.

I second that motion...
I carry the S&W M&P 45c.
light, comfortable, greatshooter.
Not that I dont own any glocks.... (glock17).
Reliable,... but uncomfortable klunky block gun.

Engine 18, I carry an M&P 45c without external safety it weighs the same as a 4" 19 and it is the same size as a Glock 19. It carries 8 rounds of 45 in the mag and one in the pipe.
Best feeling, handling compact 45 I've shot in many years. Hate Glocks as they feel unnatural and are UGLY.
From a dedicated revo guy check out the M&P.

Something about my build, or my selection of clothing (not sure which), makes it seem tricky for me to CCW very large guns. As a result, my summer guns are either a 340PD or a Seecamp 32 (usually the former) in pocket holsters. In winter I carry a Springfield Armory EMP 1911 in 9x19 in an IWB holster. The SA EMP is basically an Officers Model 1911, a 3". I have a good friend who carries a Kimber 45 in an Officers version, and the only difference between his gun and mine from a size/bulk standpoint is that his grip is a little thicker.
I think carrying any N-Frame revolver for CCW purposes would be problematic for me. But a lot of guys do it. Same with full-sized 1911s as we have already seen in this thread.

Sir, FWIW, I carry a full-size steel 1911 in a Sparks Summer Special. It conceals remarkably well, and I'm not a big guy.
I do sometimes think about a Lightweight Commander, though. The steel gun gets heavy after a while.
Hope this helps, and Semper Fi.

I frequently carry a full size Norinco M1911. I used to carry in a Don Hume 715M IWB. I recently switched to a tuckable IWB that I made.
I wouldn't mind having a Springfield MicroCompact, but just to have something different, not because it's particularly difficult to carry the Norinco.
I don't like double action autos and the .45 Glocks are too big for my hand, so when it comes to a .45, it'll probably always be an M1911 or nothing, unless I manage to get an outrageous deal on a 4" S&W 25-2 or 25-5.

This one has filled my holster on many occasions. Light and thin, just the thing for times when a bad back is bothering you.

Almost every day. Either a Kimber Compact CDP (pre-Series II) or a Springfield Armory Mil-Spec. I've been carrying the Kimber since I bought it NIB in '01 and since I bought the Mil-Spec in November '08 (my Obama gun) I've been swapping them back and forth.
The Mil-Spec is a 5" full-size all steel 1911 if you're not familiar with it. A Milt Sparks sharkskin gunbelt and a Milt Sparks Summer Special II makes it very comfortable to carry and it hides under a loose t-shirt very well.
After having bought a Pro-Series 442 last weekend, the 1911s may not be carried quite so much, fwiw.

Funny you should ask, as I've been monkeying around with various gun and holster combinations as recently as today. I have the dilemma of wanting to carry as much gun as possible on a torso of modest stature, in a climate that doesn't favor concealing garments. At this time of year, when it's really, really, hot, and humid to boot, an untucked, square cut sportshirt is about as much of a coverup as the casual business environment in which I work permits. (Anyone walking around metro Phoenix in the summer actually wearing anything like a suitcoat or sports jacket, vest, etc., is certainly covering up something --- gun, colostomy bag, whatever... and assumed to be hiding a gun...)
I can conceal a P-12 in Sparks Summer Special under a casual shirt, but even though it's been dehorned, the checkered Dymondwood grips and mainspring housing rub uncomfortably against my skin, and it bothers me that that the gun and holster are exposed to perspiration. So, I'm resolved to the compromise of a Glock 36 (the short-barreled, single stack, 6+1 capacity .45 ACP,) in a Blade-Tech IWB w/sweat guard. The holster is certainly impervious to perspiration, and seems to adequately shield the gun from same, and if not, no harm done. I have not satisfactorily resolved the manner of carrying extra mags, in their proper position, along with cell phone, hip pocket wallet, &tc.

Since you are already a Govt. Model 1911 kind of guy, you would really like a LW Commander sized 1911 for everyday carry.

My two favorite .45's for carry are my CS45 and 4513TSW thats been de-railed. I'm retired so the dress to impress does not apply. My summer garb is cargo shorts and polo shirt untucked. Both .45's carry well in a Hume JIT slide or a Bianchi Pro IWB. I prefer the 4513 overall.

I carry the Kimber CDP Ultra II 3" 1911. It carries very easily. I use a MTAC IWB or a carry-loc for OWB. Both carry without printing and are comfortable. The drawback is the 7 + 1 mag. So I carry 2 spare mags. I shoot it often at the range at work on wednesday night competitions. I am at a disadvantage due to the small mags. The other tend to carry G17s with 15 rd mags.

Same here, only I have no complaint against the weight of the Gov't Model, and my LW Cdr, which is a fine, very accurate and reliable gun that is easy to shoot, actually is LESS comfortable than the 5", because the muzzle pokes me. In a belt holster, the Cdr is better.
P.S. C&L: Thanks for posting that Colt again. I stored your photo this time.

A 5" steel 1911 is a lot less uncomfortable than you might think, and an old W. German P220 is even better.
And that old Colt revolver does look sweet.

My 1911Sc commander has been on my hip everyday for over 3 years I don't ever see myself carrying anything else, it conceals great, and is very comfortable.

FWIW, my everyday carry is a 325 NightGuard. I bobbed the hammer, did the Jerry Miculek trigger job off of the DVD, and put his grips on it. I use a Galco Summer Comfort (for a 4" N-frame) IWB with shorts and an untucked polo-style shirt. The extra length on the holster stabilizes it very well, and it rides high, with the cylinder above my belt. Have looked at other holsters, but this works well for me for now. I'm 6'1" and 185#. Haven't figured out how to conceal extra ammo except for 1/3 moon clips in the front pocket.

The smallest is not usually the best at least for me. I find that slightly larger guns that allow a full grip draw better and index better in the hand. The smallest I will go is 3913/457. In my opinion you might as well carry a larger gun rather than a smaller one as long as it conceals. Weight differences are usually small in these alloy or plastic framed guns. Also, I find that I can't conceal Glocks as well as Third Gen guns because of the shape of the slide on the Glocks when carried at 3:30 with a good degree of forward cant.

In this hot Texas weather I often carry a Para - LDA with 3 1/2" bbl, or Para CCO LDA (4 1/2") in an IWB holster under a square cut shirt. Spare mag carried in a ft. pocket carrier.

Can't beat a CS45 with "Big Dog" grips and a Blackhawk #4 Pocket holster for front pocket carry ..Also,the S&W 1911 Sub-compact With a Blackhawk #3 works well

Mines a deviation away from S&W. I carry a Colt Compact .45 ACP and love it.

2 out of 3 ain't bad. I have a Sig RCS 1911 4.25 inch and the Kimber Ultra Carry CDPII. But I don't have a S&W 1911, my full size is a P229 in 40 S&W. I have a heck of a time finding holsters for the Sig. What do you use for a concealment holster? For OWB I use the carryLoc and it works okay, I ordered a MTAC 4" 1911 body but it catches, it works for the Kimber. I called Milt Sparks and they refused to make one, I had a local custom make one that is also okay. I'm just not 100% happy with the fit of what I've found for the Sig 1911.

rljohns: For the Sig 1911 I use either a YAQUI SLIDE BELT HOLSTER or a fobus paddle. The Fobus C21B Compact Holster was originally purchased for my 3 inch Kimber. but works well enough for all 1911's. Hope this is helpful.

What I carry depends on the time of the year, the appropriate evening attire and the area where I'm going. When its a hundred and three degrees in West Texas it harder to conceal a hand cannon on ones svelte frame than in the winter when a blue norther is blowing through.
