What would you do if you spotted one?
If you were in public and spotted someone's CCW that was "showing," what would you do?
I know what I'd do...but I'm curious to hear how others might react.

Probably the same thing I'd do if I noticed someone's fly was open--it would depend on the specific circumstances.

I would discreetly walk up to him, or her, and whisper, "You're showing". The same way I'd let someone know they have toilet paper stuck to their shoe when they're exiting the restroom.

I might walk up and show him my badge and say, "hey, you're sticking out a little obvious there bud."
Or, I might just go about my business.

OC is legal in CO unless your downtown Denver, so I would guess there's nothing to say.

Happened to me when I still lived in VA, where open carry was legal. Guy had a 1911 in target, holstered in such a way that I didn't know if he was trying to carry openly or conceal, so I just politely said "Excuse, I don't know if you knew your 1911 was showing... just wanted to tell you in case you didn't."
He said thanks.
That was that.

In Louisiana, nothing other than maybe ask how the person likes the gun they are carrying. This is a gun friendly state in many ways. Open carry is legal, CC is legal with a permit and printing is not a crime.

OC is OK in PA.
I think I would only mention it in a scenario like.... A guy in WalMart bends over to pick something off a low shelf and in doing so exposes his CCW. Then I can see myself saying something.

Ahh! that's the answer I was looking for. But of course this doesn't apply in states with OC or where "showing" isn't a crime (guess I should've mentioned that before, huh?)
And of course, every situation would be different. If it's a little old lady, I don't think I'd be calling the cops on her. Each scenario would require its own judgement call.
But I've gotta admit.... When I started this thread my mindset was that I would report seeing "a man with a gun," unless it was the aforementioned "little old lady" or, for whatever reason, the guy didn't look too threatening.
But now, after reading all the replys and thinking it over more thoroughly, I don't know how fast I'd be to make that call. If he/she has a permit to carry...I'd be getting "one of our own" in trouble.
Maybe "Bailey Boat's" answer is the best one: Mind my own business....

I'd have to make a determination as to whether or not I thought it was a law-abiding citizen with a CCW or a thug about to rob the store. I know that's a tough call, but around here it's not hard to tell. Citizen: I quietly let him know. Thug: I get out of Dodge and possibly call PD.

I would discretely let him know he was showing because if I was ever accidently showing I would hope a fellow gun toter would do the same for me.

Hate to be the monkey wrench here, but most of us were presuming -- until fairly late in this thread -- that this person is carrying legally -- and wasn't about to rob the 7-11...
I'd eyeball him VERY carefully -- with my hand on my 640 .357 in my right pocket -- which I practice producing in one-half of one second...
He could be about to use that pistol on me -- and you can't always tell "thug" from "law-abiding citizen".
Ted Bundy was one of the most innocous looking people in the world.
Actually, it's this type of situation that led me to get a CCW in the first place.
One of the conditions of S.C.'s CCW law is..."It remains concealed -- and if it shows in ANY way, the law is being broken..."
The police are the ones to sort this one out...
(Of course, at a restaurant sometime back, I had to tell an auxilliary police woman I knew that she was "showing" and wasn't as plain clothes as she thought...)

Better Hope He's a Good Guy
As in all situations, it depends on the situation. However, bad guys do carry firearms and they might be up to some bad stuff. Of course, it could be an off-duty police officer. A sober tactical analysis of the terrain and situation is absolutely essential -- i.e., observed demeanor of the person in question, is the person in question alone or with others, what is venue, what are the local CCW/firearms laws, proximity of law enforcement personnel, etc. Also, you must fill-in the blanks on the "what if" check-sheet. Bottom line, extreme caution must be exercised. Simply informing the person in question without careful thought and pre-planning is simply wrong.

The above post reminded me of a story...Of course, as always!
Of an in-service training put on by US Attorney's Office for "Project Safe Neighborhoods" dealing with dope and firearms and those folks that use and deal in both...Well to make a long story short, the program for the class simple stated 'Firearm Identification', well I's thinkin' we're gonna get to look at and handle a bunch of cool stuff.
Wrong, whole class dealt with how to spot concealed weapons on folks and reading the lay of the land, so to speak. Funny thing is, I've used that info alot and it may have kept me outta a jam or two.
Su Amigo,
Dave

A couple of years ago, while making my weekly trip to the dump, I noticed another middle aged guy unloading some stuff into the scrap metal dumpster and his t-shirt had pulled up above his kel-tec. I leaned out of the cab of my truck and caught his attention and let him know he was showing. He thanked me for letting him know. I would hope someone would do the same for me.

That actually happens to me quite often. I get out of my truck and my shirt has pulled up exposing my S&W M&P .45. It's legal here in La. to open carry but I find that I draw much less attention to myself if I conceal. Back to the topic. Generally someone will make a comment and I'll pull my shirt down. It is much appreciated and I go about my buisiness.

A long time ago, in a Denny's restaurant, there were 3 guys and a woman sitting at the next table. The one with his back to me had his coat on the back on the chair and what looked to be a nickled Model 59 was laying under the chair. Just as I noticed it they decided to leave. I was sure he'd notice the 59 was missing from his coat, but no. I tapped him on the hand as he passed and pointed to the 59. Somewhat embarassed, he flashed a badge, retrieved the Smith and left. No words were ever spoken.

As much as I'd like to say politely tell him (I know I'd like the same courtesy), the serious answer is to raise your level of alert, put distance between him and you as casually as possible (keep a good angle, make note of cover), and maintain your posture and alert until you leave the area. I wouldn't call the police unless I had genuine reason to belive he had ill intent. You don't have to make a scene, but just put your self into a higher alert level just in case. You just can't be too careful these days.

I still stand by my original reply, however, I should have expounded somewhat. Naturally, I wouldn't if he looked like a thug. Nor would I if he looked like an "urban commando" who's appointed himself as guardian over 'the sheep". But if he looked like me, ( I'm talking Mr. Joe Average) and he was carrying in a holster, (most BG's don't) then I still would.
About 15 years ago my friend Nolan was giving an ice carving demonstration at a mall in Pocatello, Idaho. He was carrying a Ruger SP-101 in a IWB holster. During the course of the demonstation, his chef's jacket rode up and exposed his gun. Nobody said a word about it, and there was a pretty good crowd. He thought it would have been nice if someone had discreetly told him. He finished with no one saying a word. That's Idaho, though.

no need to make it complicated.
I think everyone is kinda right in their own way.
I can see the logic in each reply.
but lets be honest. We have all had this happen.
If you haven't then you just started CCing.
I remember I was replacing the ABS senser on my truck in the Auto Shop's parking lot.
and I was getting up from under the truck and oops!!!
This Scumbag, meth sored, slug, saw it and was,
wide eyed and opened mouthed.
My reply was, "stupid trucks, always breakin!"
he got the 'I just pee'd look' and gave me 2 chuckles.
LMFAO!!!!
In all reality...
Do what you will,
but dont be suprised when someone tells you to go to hell. or if they say thanks.
The world today is full of ignorant, loud mouth jerks.
So hopfully you dont give "feedback" to one of them.
Who knows what the right answer is...

Keep an eye on the person and not say anything. I would never assume that someone carrying a gun is a "good guy".

We were cautioned in class that even though Ohio is an Open Carry State, if someone does see my firearm and scream: "Ohmygodhesgotagun!" I risk the very real chance of being arrested for inducing panic.
