Default Holster for new S&W 442

Looking for a holster for my S&W 442 and I don't think in pocket will work for me (jeans too tight) though I like the idea. I'm looking at both Uncle Mike's Hidden Hammer Super Belt Slide and the Galco Cop 3 Slot; similar design but different materials. Any other ideas?

Also, for my wife's in purse 642, should she have a holster or would this just make it too hard to access?

Here's my 442 in a holster made by Lobo Gun Leather - Home Ray makes a great holster. This is a Style 1 Enhanced Pancake. It is made for OWB carry. Wear your shirt untucked and no one will evere know you have it on.

Seems like I'm on the right track with the molded, butt forward holster like the Lobo and Blackhawk. I was looking at the Mike's and Galco just becaust they're the brands my gun range handles.

What about the wife?

442 & 642 take the same holsters. If I'm not mistaken all 2" J-Frames holster the same.

Use a holster! Even if you just velcro in a pocket holster, its far better than nothing.

The first time she tries to draw the gun when it is jammed in the bottom of the purse with a lipstick through the trigger guard, she'll understand.

Also look at Simply Rugged. They make a great holster at a very good price.

I have a drawer full of holsters, but my "Go To" holster is a Galco Stinger. Saw it used by an instructor at Gunsite, got one for myself. I also use a Galco pocket holster when I wear shorts with big pockets.

Galco holsters; Holsters; Gun holster, pistol holsters, western holsters, shoulder holsters, leather holster and Glock holsters

My wife uses a Coronado Leather concealed carry purse. Most gun purses come with holsters, some built in. The gun should be in its own compartment, void of lipsticks, mirrors and the other stuff women always carry. My wife recommends to get one with a zipper closure rather than velcro. They are rather pricey, but they do have a good warranty. She had some stitching come loose and it was repaired with no problem.

Coronado Leather, makers of handcrafted, concealment leatherwear for law enforcement and those interested in high quality leather jackets, handbags and carrycases for firearm concealment

Go with a pancake design if you are looking for OWB...it pulls the gun in closer than any other design...

Nice grips on the 642! I'm definitely looking at the right style for me from what I'm reading, I'll pass the Coronado Leather info onto the wife, looks like some nice stuff.

My favorite holster for the J frame and Det spec is the bianchi 105 minimalist. It is in fact pancake style, and is truly a minimal holster that does the job. It uses an O ring to secure the gun via the hammer or the O ring flips back if you carry a hammer less style. My J frames and Det spec fit this holster and even my Browning BDA fits great in it. Good buy for leather around $50.

I like the Lobo (regular) Pancake holster for the 442, too. Ray's nailed it for very discreet J Frame carry.

I've had some aesthetic issues with some of his other holsters, but am very pleased with his J Frame creations. For the money, it's hard to go wrong.

Take a look at the ones made by REMORA products. Remora Concealment and Security Products I bought three of them and really like them. I have to admit that they are different but they work.

Anyone tried the Blackhawk Speed Classic for J frames? Supposedly the same as the original Berns Martin but I only see a rear belt slot in the picture, don't know how well it would hold to the body. It does look like it fits the gun well and is really compact.

Looks like a nice rig....here's a video on it

YouTube - Blackhawk Speed Classic Holster

Just remember that tunnel and slot designs don't pull the front portion of the gun in as close as two slots like on standard pancake shown here....

That's kind of what I wondered about, how well it would pull in. But hey, now I have a name; tunnel and slot.

Hi,
The Uncle Mike's Hidden Hammer Super Belt Slide Holster
(#6340-1) was the first holster I purchased for my 642...I've used it over a year now and really like it a LOT.
It's comfortable and you forget you're packin the revolver...I really like the security of the retention system too; I can draw the weapon "easy", but someone else cannot...this is important to me...not only if in a hand to hand combat scenerio, but also if one of my small children charges at me "unexpectedly"...I am confident it stays secure.
I normally wear it cross-draw, as I find this works well under a variety of conditions.

I did recently decide to try a Desantis Nemesis pocket holster too..."for me", it's just not as user-friendly...
The holster itself is great, but pocket carry in my pants just isn't workin...The revolver feels bulky and prints badly with my build/type of pants and also I worry about being able to draw the revolver when seated...
However, in a Jacket pocket it would be a good option; so glad to have it as an addition.

Good luck with your selection!

As I've talked to more people about this, most are saying to stay away from nylon holster's like the Unkle Mike's and to stick to leather. Some site gun finish wear, some how the nylon will wear. What's the opinion out there?

Good question...
I don't have enough experience for a comparison, but from what I've read and heard, it's my understanding that a properly fitted holster is better for the guns finish and causes less wear, regardless of interior lining...So with that said, it would seem like a custom fit Leather Holster would be the best option in that regard.

I have a custom Leather Sourdough Pancake coming soon for my 686...can't wait to try it out.

Anyway, when deciding on a holster for my 642, the "internal retention feature" was what determined my selection for this particular revolver...as I covered in my earlier post, I like that it makes the revolver from being drawn by someone else very difficult.

I have used the Blackhawk speed scabbard in the past and like it. I have also used a Winthrop OWB too. Both are pretty good.
