You're not gonna use this as an excuse to wear a dress, are you?

Hi, g8rb8:
I only wear a dress when I am hanging out at a street corner.
(could this be the reason the local good old boys won't let me join their club?)

Back on topic.
Most non-Law Enforcement women that I teach opt for purse carry with the overwhelming majority choosing a S&W Centennial or Bodyguard or the various clones of these designs that are out there.

I am not a female, nor do I play one on TV, but most choose a .380 pocket sized gun (Ruger LCP, S&W BG380, Sig P238, Glock 42, Taurus TCP), the slim 9mm's are very popular (Ruger LC9, S&W Shield, Beretta Nano, Glock 43, Sig938, Springfield XDS9, Walther CCP, Taurus 709), and of course the small revolvers (S&W Airlites, Ruger LCR, Charter Arms UL, Taurus 85UL). Some more practical ladies opt for double stack compacts (Ruger SR9C, Glock 26, S&W M&P Compact, Taurus PT111 Millennium, SCCY).
I notice many guys lean their ladies towards the cheaper guns when they are paying for it...because they are cheap and do not love them so much. The ladies on their own tend to make good decisions as long as it's not budget driven. Some opt for the smallest, toughest to shoot guns because they are light and/or "cute."
Some other popular choices are the Walther PK380 and the various compact 22's (Walther P22, Ruger SR22, S&W M&P 22 Compact). The 22lr's are a popular "starter" but certainly not the best defensive choice.
Modes of carry vary greatly from purse, to belly band, bra holster, and even thigh. Very few do waistband carry from what I've seen, as many (especially younger, fit gals), don't want to compromise their mode of dress

My, platonic, shooting friend is a woman. She seems to always carry a 9mm Sigma in an ersatz driving holster under the steering wheel. It looks home made from a nylon holster of the no name belt variety. A similar ten dollar holster goes on her belt at times. She used to carry a Rossi .38 snub before the Sigma. I gave her a S&W boot knife I had which she apparently carries in her bra.
Her mother carries a Beretta Model 84 in a custom leather belt holster and also has a Ruger LC9.
My wife purse carried a .40 Beretta for a while, then a .25 in a Hello Kitty bag, and then went to intermittent pocket carry with whatever small auto was handy. She also carried an OTF automatic knife for a while.
This one lawyer I dated once carried a Sig P225 OWB and a Ruger Sp101 in her purse.
The rest of the women I knew tended to prefer knives and razors and were fairly free about being willing to cut a man.

You can almost compare women style of carry to men except for purse carry and bra holsters of course .
I have a wife and two girls that carry . Wife has a purse but mostly iwb or owb . Girls carry iwb . Handguns range from micro 380s to 9mm for carry all depending on how they dress . Dress ?? None are dress girls . Slacks and shirts , sweaters and such .
Best thing most men can do is find a way to let them try as many handguns and holster as possible but stay the heck out of what you think they want . Hook them up with a other non family members or instructors and they will figure it all out just like us men .

3. Mode of dress when carrying - 90% casual - belt carry, 10% dress - Holster Purse
4. Type and caliber of CCW weapon - Sig P238 - .380, Shield - 9mm, 3 inch 686 Plus - .357
5. Frequently of range practice - At least every other week I take a few firearms out for practice. The CC guns probably get shot every couple of months.

JJ, Body type and size is more restricting on women. My granddaughter carries in ways I can't and vice versa.

I will answer for my wife as she does not read this forum.
1. Mostly in a dedicated concealment purse. But, when dressed for business she wears a pants suit with a slightly large jacket and under that a very light shoulder holster that I made and fitted to her.
2. Always concealed (see above) and everywhere she goes no matter what the door sign says. Only a magnetometer will deter her from carrying.
3. In the purse with anything that she is wearing. In the shoulder holster only under the jacket of a formal pants suit. The only exception I have seen is in the pocket of a heavy winter coat, but that doesn't happen very often in Las Vegas.
4. Now, S&W M 642 with +Ps, formerly a Ruger SP 101 with 140 gr. HP 357 Mag. And, once in a while a Kel-Tec P-32 (until we shot some water jugs, she was unimpressed with the .32 acp.
5. Minimum of once per month and once in a while she will take a moment when I am going to the range and will shoot only 10 to 15 shots.
An aside; My wife has carried legally for 20 years. She has never had to 'draw', but she did end a nasty encounter with a Mexican male that wanted her parking spot by unzipping her purse gun pocket, placing her hand on her S&W and telling the guy, "Beat it or get hurt". He left forthwith.. :-)

To more seriously answer your question I only know first-hand of a woman who carries, either a single-line .38 M&P 4" or a 638, and either is in a purse.
I work with a few women with CC permits but the work place doesn't allow it and I've never asked how or if they carry but if I can remember will ask and get back to this thread.

much to my dislike/dismay, my wife uses a Coronado Leather CCW purse. she ALWAYS carries, and carries a S&W 637. 2 5 Star speed loaders go along for the ride. she is a professional, so dress is nice. we go on date nights every couple of weeks to bass pro's range. we shoot a 100 or so rounds each, then head to the restaurant downstairs for supper. i'm a lucky dude with a wife who enjoys shooting almost as much as me!

Answering for my wife, as she's not a member on here:
1&2) When not at work, but out and about - 90% of the time IWB Milt Sparks at about 4oclock. The rest of the time, there's a secret pocket in her purse. One of those fancy schmancy high end purses, but the price seemed ok when she picked it up and went "oh look, this is where the gun goes!".
3) Jeans/Shorts with a cover up t-shirt, sweatshirt or jacket. When at work (where guns aren't supposed to be), there's always that purse......maybe...
4)Primary that gets 90% of the carry time - Glock 23 in .357sig. Purse carry time see's the airweight J frame in .38spl +p.
5) Averages 1-2 professional training courses a year (rotates between handgun, rifle and shotgun based upon the amount of bruising, cut fingers and swearing she's up for). Probably hits the range 2-4 more times during the year for real practice and then there's always the family camping trips with "plinking" involved. That said, it's not enough - her words - but it's better than nothing.

As a male instructor, I point women to the following resources:
- Cornered Cat | If you have to fight, fight like a cornered cat. Kathy has written books and posted a ton of good info for women.
- https://www.youtube.com/user/limalife "Limatunes" (Melody Lauer) is one awesome gun-carrying young lady with lots of good advice for the women. She's also a Mod on DefensiveCarry.com but she's not as active as she used to be due to family obligations, but there is a great thread there on women's issues.

My wife has now decided that she wants a leg drop holster like she had in the Navy and her own CZ75 variant to put in it. She is more or less sold on the SP01 Tactical which features a decocker only. Of course this is Wyoming. So yes, she intends to just wear it around. Shrug.
Some women outgrow their cute guns I suppose.

She sounds like my kind of gal. You chose well.
Regarding "cute". Let's just say, if I owned a gun store there wouldn't be anything pink for sale. To a child, NO FIREARM should look like a toy.
My circular saw is not pink. A serious tool should look like a serious tool.
Just my bias...........

My wife is 4'11" and has a fairly short torso, however she occasionally carries her Springfield XD-S .45 IWB in a Stealth Gear Onyx, but more often than not carries it in her purse.
We get to the range at least twice a month and shoot local IDPA matches when our job schedules allow.
