3" Model 624 .44 Special N frame in a Lobo gunleather IWB, held up by a Crossbreed 1.5" gunbelt. The holster is great but the belt makes the difference in wether this rig is comfortable or not.

Just wanted to bump a good thread & add to it. I just placed an order for a Simply Rugged Sourdough to carry my S&W Brazilian 1917 while hunting.

I don't own any short barreled "N" frames but I use a Bianchi X15 for my 6 in. M27 and 6 1/2 in. M29. By using shoulder holsters I don't have to worry about losing my pants. Larry

... I carried a Model 28 4" around in a Bianchi 5BH. I was young and poor and the two of them were all I had. I was on the Sheriff's Reserve and the 28 was my duty gun. The 5BH was my woods / CCW holster.
Both gone now and I wish I had them back (or at least the 28.)

I carry my 625 with 3" barrel in a Lobo Model 1 Pancake with Inner Hammer Shield, with Detailed Boning. I have also been carrying my 310 Night Guard with 2.75" barrel in this same holster till Ray gets me an Enhanced Pancake custom built for the Night Guard.

I also have an Enhanced Pancake on order for my 4" S&W Model 610.

I carry the steel N Frames with no problem. The 310 Night Guard N Frame Air Weight is fast becoming my favorite concealed carry piece however.

I prefer the pancake holster for revolvers for concealed carry. I like the Askens Avenger style for semi auto's.

3 and 4" 624s in the original (Gould and Goodrich) 624 holster
and the Mernickle previously mentioned. Both of these lay flat
on the waist and let the belt straight through without much bending.
I have tried (and returned) several pancake holsters that required
the belt to do some serious belly dancing to do its job.
These holsters you can wear the belt in its normal hole on the
buckle.




The Mernickle is an interesting and unique holster in that it is
the outer 3/4 of a duty holster sewn onto the back panel of a
pancake. It works wonders. Very comfortable. It also fits my
Mountain Revolver.

I use a Galco SB-5 1.75" belt. About the most belt you can fit in a
pair of jeans. Recommended.

I carry a S&W 310 Night Guard in a Lobo Gunleather pancake. This is my everyday carry gun and I love the gun and the rig. I actually bought a second 310 and a additional Lobo holster for it.

We were winning when I left.

The 24 or 624 was a 44 Special. Just a note I am selling the original vintage 1980's holster made by S&W for the 624 in 3 in black. They probably are big and heavy guns because they are n frame. I can see how shooting a 3" 29 or 57 with Magnum loads could be a nightmare. The muscle flash would not be contained in the barrel and I imagine you would see quite a flash outside the barrel when using Magnum loads and the kick would be very large making it difficult to hold. I don't imagine the people that have these could fire the magnum loads very long. I could see difficulty in even holding the weapon with the magnums. I wonder how long a 3" 41 or 44 Magnum would hold up to firing only magnum loads. Personally I could see how the N frame could be handling considerable stress when the barrel is so short. The kick would make rapid fire very difficult and subsequent firing slower with magnum rounds.

Pure Kustoms are great for the big dogs!

I have a holster with the S&W label made by Galco for Smith and Wesson. The holster was intended for the 624 3" N frame but I have found that the holsters that fit the 624 also fit the other N frame 2 1/2" and 3" revolver. I am wondering whether this holster is going to have the same ability which is to fit other N frame guns like the model 629. Thanks.

For a PC 627 UDR I use the Galco Combat Master. Rides high, but not so high you're hitting your armpit to draw. An even higher option is the Galco Silhouette High Ride pictured on page one of this thread. A DeSantis Thumb Break is a bit lower than the Combat Master, but will conceal under any light jacket and some shirts worn out, but in my opinion, you give up quite a bit of quality with the DeSantis when compared to the Galco.

i stuff my 57 into an old jackass shoulder rig with a double dump pouch on the other side. it works fine, and unless your very observant, hides well.

I carry all my 4" N frames in a Mernickle PS holster. It can be worn straight draw. Here's a photo with my Model22 TR. Great rig!

Well I could not resist and a large local GS had a 629 6 inch and I bought it !!!

Well I reload everything I shoot now so I am using Hodgdon Titegroup. I load the .44 remington mag with 2 Loads: 4.7 grains for a "special" load and then 9 grains for a full magnum load .. 240 grain jacketed hollow points... speer. Well I love the thing and I DO carry it concealed , really!! In a right hand draw shoulder holster I bought off ebay. and it's not bad. on the right side are 2 pouches for speedloaders. Clearly I love the idea that anything I have to shoot will not recover but I will be honest getting it out of the shoulder and pointed, WEll it is a tiny bit slow. I am practicing doing just that, Hopefully, in an emergency, I will actually have a few seconds to drag it out. Also it's true though, you can shoot the .44 special loads all day, the magnum loads? Not so much!

I'm 5'8", 145 lbs. with my shoes on and I live in Arizona. Isn't gonna happen.

I have 3 N frame snub nose revolvers, a 25 45 Colt, 629 44 mag and a 24-3 Lew Horton 44 and one L frame. I carry them in a Craft Holster iwb. It has an adjustment for the smaller L frame 686 357. It's a comfortable holster and I'm able to conceal it with a loose shirt in warm weather. Sometimes I'll carry it in their shoulder rig. I have it on right now with the 686 and had it on all day. The only thing I had added to it by a local shoe repair shop was a sweat shield to keep the gun grip away from my skin in the warmer weather when I don't ware a t shirt.

Iggy love that holster.I have what I call a old school fighting gun.A 1917 cut to 3 1/2 in and hard Chromed with some interesting smooth grips shaped like cokes.i saw it at a gunshow years ago and kept going back and looking at it.My wife said enough after fourth time I handled it.And bought it for me.Wonderful woman and also a heck of a shot.Losing train of thought been a long day.But I need to find a holster like that.

Thought I would add this, Actually I worry more about going right through whatever I might have to shoot. those are hot loads. Probably go right through a perp.

Simply Rugged CID for my 21-4. Rides high and is hidden under a light jacket or shirt tail. This may not work for someone with, shall we say, a large build.

Maybe not the most concealable, but for driving and open carry I am another Mernickle cross-draw fan.
Got it off a forum member here as an experiment and is now a favorite after some break in.
So comfortable you forget that extra 3 lbs. on your waist.
This is a 696-1 in their holster and the Galco SB-5 belt.

Carry a 57 or 657 Mountain Gun once in a while... Usually use a DeSantis Speed Scabbard. Holds the gun high and tight to the body and has "ears" that protect ones clothes from the rear sight and hammer spur...

$50+-...hard to go wrong...

I got it from the Old Trading Post. About anything will fit in
it. There is a pouch for a magazine.

Gunzuki - I think you just broke the record for digging up the oldest thread (almost 6 yrs) and bringing it back to life.


Back to topic - I have a Bell Charter Oak Grizzly Bear IWB for my 629pc.

I prefer IWB and generally use a Lobo like Roundgunner's last one pictured above. That style, with the snap straps help distribute the weight over a broader area across a good stiff belt and IWB keeps it in tight to the body. I carry Nightguards (325 & 329), 24-3 LHs, and also have one for 4" guns (29-2,3). I also sometimes use a Milt Sparks Summer Special for my 4" fixed sighted N frames 21-4, TripleLock, and HE-4th.

Too heavy for me. Used to carry an N-Frame as a backup during the winter under my uniform jacket in a shoulder holster. Even a 2" model 66 is too heavy for me in an OWB belt holster for only 6 shots off-duty. If I carry an N-frame in a belt holster, chances are, I'm on a mission..... Otherwise, I'd carry a full-size Glock or Sig with 2 extra mags for the same pain in the butt factor.

I have had the pleasure of dealing with Rudy for a 10+ years, Black Hills Leather 956-712-9434. I have High ride OWB holsters for 629,57,500,19, plus derringers, double rig shoulder holster and all have been superb in workmanship and comfort. Photos of 500 SW, 4" . Be Safe,

I BACK OUR BLUE

They are made of stiff, durable, horse hide. The top stays open and re-holstering is easy. IWB and OWB are both excellent.

Carried a 4" 28 in a Roy Baker Pancake for many years. If I ever feel the need to go loaded for bear again, my Mountain Revolver will fit in it.

I’ll bump it too. I wanted a hi-ride and ran across this S&W stamped Galco Silhouette, thanks Hank Dodge. Since stamped, am guessing it’s a Lew Horton? Anyway, I prefer open bottom but want barrel covered, which it is with the 2” M625 barrel. Just arrived today so too early to tell how I’ll like it but from looks it’s off to a good start, IMO.

Whatever holster you choose, be sure the loaded cylinder is at, or below
belt level. Otherwise, the grip will sag outward and the outline will show
through your cover garment. Here are 3 that I kinda like, Left to Right:

I carry my 5" 629 "Classic" .44mag every day, from pajamas-off until pajamas-on. In a homemade under-the-shirt vertical cloth shoulder holster rig. Very comfortable and well-concealed.

I can describe it though. It primarily consists of a long elastic strap: 2" wide, KNITTED (not woven or braided) elastic (I get it at JoAnn's fabric stores). The knitted type is required, because it goes around compound curves without kinking much better than woven or braided elastic straps. It is attached to the top rear of the cloth holster (under my left arm), and goes vertically upward to a spot just behind my neck, then up and over my right shoulder, down the right side of my chest, then curving around to the lower part of my back (on the right side), and finally running across the lower part of my back, attaching to the lower front part of the cloth holster. A short piece of 2" knitted elastic strap goes from the upper front of the holster, running upward in front of my left shoulder, and ending when it intersects (and is stitched to) the first long strap, just behind and to the right side of my neck. Two 1" elastic straps (with plastic connectors over my sternum) run across my chest, connecting the holster at two points to the vertical 2" strap running down the right front of my chest. One of those straps is almost horizontal, and the other is slanted, from high on my right side to low on my left side. Finally (and very important), there is an NON-elastic 1" strap running from the 2" elastic strap (where it goes from the lower front of my right chest around my right side) to the upper rear of the holster (angling upward across my back). That is the "anti-sway" strap, that prevents the upper part of the gun from rotating forward when I bend over.

The result is that the rig holds the gun snugly against my body, with no flopping around like you get with other shoulder holsters. And I think that long 2" strap that runs along the length of my two shoulders spreads the load of the gun better than any other holster ... that's why I can carry that gun all my waking hours without it feeling heavy to me. It took MANY trial-and-error iterations to finally get it right, starting years ago with other guns.

To put it on, I hold the lower part of the holster (with the gun in it) with my right hand, and stick my left arm through the triangular hole formed by the two straps that run from each side of the top of the holster to the point where those two straps are stitched together. I then stick my right arm behind me, through the long 2" strap near where it connects to the lower front of the holster. Finally, those two non-elastic straps with the connectors are connected.

Ditto here, as a bigger guy it's not that difficult. I wear loose fitting comfortable clothes now as a retired guy, so I wear a full size revolver. Simply Rugged pancake or a Milt Sparks summer special is how i carry my 3" 686 daily now. My 4" 629 Mtn Gun would be worn the same. A speed strip in my pocket and that's my EDC.

I have a few shoulder holsters but all but one are for longer hunting revolvers which I now prefer a "chesty" for.
I have used a cheapy Uncle Mikes to carry a Bulldog under the arm pit but don't really trust the upside down style to be secure.
A good shoulder rig for 3" L frames has always been on my wish list but never seems to happen.
Mernickle is currently making me a cross-draw for a 396 which doesn't fit in the L3 I already have due to the very high front sight.

3" 624 in the BLW holster that came with it:
Even though the cylinder is above the belt (which I like), it doesn't lean away from my side and "print".
The 1.75" Galco belt may help with that.
I also have a pants loop in between the holster slots directly behind the gun.
Craig Spegel ebony extended boot grips.
All the 3" L Frame 44's ride nice in this holster as well.
Best high-ride OWB 3" 44 holster I have ever used.

You'd be surprised what you can hide under an open shirt or light jacket! This is my hunting rig for a 6 1/2" 629-4 Classic. Our goals and needs are varied but I've never warmed to belt carry for the jamming in my ribs while driving, or printing when reaching for that bottom row at Home Depot. Shoulder holsters make sense for me. I attach the off side to belt but let the gun side be "free." It follows my movement nicely and allows for comfortable fit with frame pack. A shoulder holster also keeps your gun protected from the elements such as snow, branches and yes rocks when traversing rock slides. And when you have to drop your pants your gun is always in the same place! Oh, you can also draw with your left hand which might come in handy. Another thing to consider is it is completely comfortable when seated in a car and is easy and discreet to draw without the contortions needed from a belt holster.

The 4" Galco rig is for my 629-1 or 29-4. I recently bought it so it has zero miles on it.

I've tried other shoulder rigs but non compare to Galco. They're expensive but you end up buying only one!

This rig is for my previous EDC: a 5-shot 4" Model 69 L-Frame .44mag. But the rig for my current EDC (a 6-shot Model 629 5" .44mag) is almost exactly the same, except the cloth fabric is heavier ... it's called "fire-hose cotton" ... I had to special order it, Jo Ann's fabric stores don't carry it.
