Wife interested in takin ccw class. She has only shot a few times but seems to catch on quick and is fairly safe with weapon. A group of family member r going and she wonders if she Shld go with. I think she wld b fine and wld probably learn some good instruction..so question isam i right Shld she go or get more comfortable with a firearm first

well .. ya married the girl cause ya wanna share life with her, and shooting is part of that art we call living. take the lady to the range and tighten up that gun handling a bit ... it can only help

Mmmmkay ... here in lies one of those often overlooked landmines known as the female thought process....
if she were dead sure and confident about that arrangement .. I assure you that she'd be telling you rather than asking you. ask her if she thinks shes ready for it .. if so .. offer support, if not take her to the range and get her more confident with arms.

Knowledge is power to my wife. We took a 8 hour gun course to obtain our CCW's and she had never fired a pistol b4. We rented a 9mm Glock for her that day for the live fire exercise. And to my surprise she got 44 out of 50 rounds on paper! We both have CCW's and I bought her a PT-738. She is happy with what she has accomplished with shooting pistols. It is very empowering to women. Cuz y'all know they like control. Just got back from the range a bit ago, and let me tell ya she is in a great mood.
SO! with all that gibberish, I say let her take the course. Get the schooling and I think she will want to get her CCW.

Thanks to everyone. She brought it up at dinner tonight , so it seems to b something she wants to do . She's only worried of her limited shooting and skill . I think its more about others perseption of her skill. It's totally up to her but after our first time together at the range she was stoked and talked of what gun she wld like to have for her own. Even as far as saying hey there's a gun show this weekend.... U can imagine my surprise and excitment. It's up to her but I definetly like the idea of her interest in wanted to get more fimilar in firearms and protecting herself. Thanks for the input yall ..love this site !

My wife made a statement the other day too that she'd be interested in carrying if she could purse carry. So we started looking at purses and trying to decide which gun would work best for her. She's joined me at the range and had some group lessons too.

Always good to hear the women in our lives take ownership of their own personal safety.

The CARRY is better ON THE PERSON. There are many Purses made to carry and also BE LOST in a Purse Snatching, so body carry in a holster is a better choice.

And PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE, both Shooting and also DRAWING/Removing the safety, with an Unloaded (Double VERIFIED) or using a DUMMY Practice firearm.

I know that but gotta start somewhere ... I'm just glad she's turning the corner. We'll spend lots of time on scenarios, retention, drawing and options for shooting with a purse holster.

Take her to the range as much as you can before she goes to class and be sure to give her lots of encouragement and praise. It will build her confidence and help her get over her anxiety.

Be sure she has hands-on for any purse she is interested in. I bought my wife a gun purse and the hole for the gun is made for a child's hand ... and that ain't my wife!!!

It is NEVER a bad idea to take classes in quest of knowledge. She is interested...let her take the class. As an instructor since 1988, I have seen a big upswing in couples taking classes together regardless of how much experience or lack thereof they have.
I have worked with the couple as a team and also have had them in the same class but live firing with different instructors.
Afterwards the couples seem to have a blast sharing what they had learned from THEIR instructor.
You simply cannot lose by her attending a class for her reasons...not yours.
Also, let her select her own firearm, I see too many that will pre-select something based on what THEY like and not what she likes. Proper fit in HER had is paramount, be it a revolver or a semi-auto makes no difference. It is the fit first.

My wife carries a Colt 1911 "Mexican" around the Ponderosa but will not body carry when we're out. Purse carry or nothing she says. Well, it is better than nothing. And she has a M&P9C for that.
She is particularly fond of the American Hobo by Coronado Leather (Google it). They are expensive but the quality is second-to-none. And they make a mean vest as well!

My wife's and my carry guns. Her's is the one with the rosewood grips. It was her service gun when she was a vice and narcotics detective sergeant. She had no problem shooting the j frame. She would on ocassion shoot better than I would.

Because women can be real picky about purses, I'm concerned about buying something online ... I'm wondering if she needs to go "hands on" (to quote Road Rat). As for guns, I'll let her choose from either what we have that might fit the bill (J-frame, M&P 9c or Kahr CW9) or get her something else. Like we've said in this thread ... just happy she's interested in finally willing to carry.

I showed her this today from the Phoenix paper ... anyother good reason to carry.

Woman stabbed in head in Chandler carjack attempt

A 46-year-old woman was stabbed twice in the head with a pocketknife in Chandler on Wednesday evening when two men attempted to carjack her, officials said.

Chandler Police Department spokesman Seth Tyler said the men rear-ended the woman with their blue Nissan pickup at about 8:45 p.m. in the area of Gilbert and Pecos roads near the Gilbert border and proceeded to confront her and demand her keys. When the woman refused, Tyler said, one of the men stabbed her in the head before fleeing.

Tyler said the woman's condition was unknown but that she was "conscious and alert."

Police are searching for the two assailants, who are said to have a lot of tattoos. Tyler said one is clean-shaven and another has a beard.

Early on, I learned the only part of the process the husband should take is getting her to the range.

Never in my wildest dreams did I think she would carry. Only wanted her to be able to confidently shoot the S+W bedside revolver.

Mine started with several .22's of various make.

She got third party instruction from the professionals at the range.

Mamma got a new pair of shoes each trip... make it fun and rewarding.

After a few trips to the range I pushed her a bit and she was shooting competent and safe with L,K, and J frames. She scratched the J frame off the list.

A big Thanksgiving family get togeather and shootout showed she could handle a Glock 26 without any complaint. Throw in a CT for the cool factor and she is carrying.

A) Make it fun
B) Let her grow in caliber
C) Dial back the protective man card- It needs to be her choice of gun and caliber
D) Strongly advise neutral third party in early stages

If my wife can do it and grow into a 9mm and shoot .45acp for fun... any lady can.
