When I carry my 5-shot .38spl, I carry 2 extras speed loaders. With my auto, 1 extra mag. Extra ammo in car.

I carry my Model 10 fully loaded with 2 speed strips in my weak side pocket.

I carry five in my J frame and one 6 round speed strip in my off hand rear pocket.

Today, my 2nd gen beat up glock 23 and my kel tec p3at. same as otj.except no extera rounds..

If carrying my revolver it 5 in the cylinder with two 6rd speed loaders, 1911 officer's 1 7 rd mag in the gun and two extra mags, Sig is one mag in the gun and two mags on the off side although depending on what holster I'm using and concealment method I may drop that to one extra mag. Depends on the circumstances.

edprof, if you are still around, do you remember where you read this? I've been looking for this information to compare to the statistics from the late 70s, early 80s period.

If anyone else knows of a source for this information I'd like to hear from you too.

Arrrrg, just accidentally deleted entire pre-written post. Ok take 2, probably going to forget things. Main statement I'd like to make is my on-person round count is directly proportional with how far I am going to be traveling from my home. If I am less than three miles from my home I will be more inclined to have a fully loaded gun with one reload on my person. 9 out of ten times this is my SW1911 with one in chamber 8 in chip mccormick, and one ten round chip mccormick on my person. If I am looking at ten to 20 miles or so from my home I'm likely to carry three additional S&W 1911 mags in a 'smart carry' aka thunderwear. Basically I have no reason to expect trouble, but I do NOT want to kick the bucket early, or worse yet live the rest of my life wishing I could have saved someone and hadn't been able to due to lack of ammo. Also, you never know when you'll get a chance to plink a few, so I like to have a mag of FMJ either as one of the three in the smart carry, or whenever I have a backpack, just in case a safe, fun opportunity arises. If I am traveling in excess of 100 miles from my home (and arsenal!) I will usually bring the 12 gauge, thoroughly locked and unloaded, usually well-hidden, perhaps even with cable lock through action AND trigger lock. Also have a bandolier of 00 buck, 000buck, hollow slugs and long range slugs that goes where my shotty goes. This is basically in case the world as we know it decides to drastically change for whatever reason. I'm a firm believer in Murphy's law, I try to take it into consideration as much as possible without letting it ruin my fun
My most common carry is my SW1911. If my clothing permits, I also carry a beretta .32 tomcat loaded with JHPs and a bag of a few extra rounds easily fits in the pocket of my smart carry behind the 1911 mags. In the winter I sometimes switch to my Ruger gp100 in a shoulder rig, with a total of three additional speed loaders, one in each side jacket pocket, and the third wherever is ideal. This is for comfort and because a winter jacket makes it easier to conceal. Also sometimes because my 1911 is filthy and/or soaking in oil after a good shoot.

i have one s&w factory 8 round mag fully loaded with golden sabre .45acp jhps that just stays in my car at all times. it's the 'i really hope I never need to use this' mag

Either a 642 or a Kahr CM9, and ALWAYS wear a pair of New Balance track shoes.

MP.45 with 10 in the magazine and 1 in the pipe. No spare mags, and I'd like to find a smaller .45 .... I think 11 is overkill and heavy for SD .... 4+1 would treat me just fine.

Last night the wife and I are out to eat. I see three young men walking through the parking lot. About the time I notice these guys two black and whites pull up and corral them. ID's pulled out and one gets hand cuffed and thrown into the squad car. The guys are smoking "blunts". I don't see the cops checking pockets for dope. A few minutes later one of the guys mom shows up.

Anyway, starts me thinking: what if I was confronted by these guys going to my car? A snubby starts looking like not enough horsepower. Colt Commander or any other eight shot auto? I better be on my game if gun play is required. I don't know, maybe you get one and the others run off. Who knows?

When the criminals start running in packs like wild dogs it all gets a bit dicey.

I carry a 640-1 the majority of the time. I have a speedloader on my belt on my strong side, and a speed-strip in my offside pocket.

Two things to keep in mind about people like that...

1. They do tend to run in packs.

2. They do tend to be cowards (that's why they run in packs).

Most real world cases I've read show that everyone scatters like roaches when the shooting starts. You can't always count on it, but it's highly likely that, when they see their friend's brains coming out the back of his head, they all decide to run.

6 in the Cylinder and 2 speed loaders with 6 each. The rounds are Hornady XTP 240grain HP with 23.5 grains of IMR4227. Reason is i usually am either in the city or the woods and they get interchanged often so im ready for anything like those darn zombies.lol

I carry 5 rounds in a CA 44 Spl Bulldog, with 3 speedloaders of
5 in each, thats 20 rounds plus a small case with 10 extra rounds, and a second gun S&W 38 Spl, with only 5 rounds,
so I guess my total round count for carry is 35 rounds on me,
and an extra 20 rounds in my vehicle for the CA 44.
I guess I carry more because I worry that an encounter may
involve more than one BG.

5-16 depending on what gun I carry.....5 shot revolver some 7 shot semis (one six shot revolver) and one 16 rnd semi auto 9mm.....kinda coves the bases doesnt it?

I carry whatever is in the gun. With my 442, it's the five rounds. With my CS9, it's 7+1. I very rarely carry any spare ammo.

This one goes with me everywhere in retirement. If I'm on a road trip, I'll carry a couple of extra speed strips. I don't carry the badge anymore; just an ID card buried in my wallet. Looks good in the photo, though.

hey... I got a holster just like that for my M60! Mine is better, though, it's a left hand version. That gives me 5 beans in the pot.

Seems like his is a left handed version as well.

Spring, fall, and winter, 21....16 in the G19, OWB ( IWB is for them young fit whipper-snappers ) at 5 o'clock, and 5 of course in my 442 in an ankle-holster. Summer just 10, my 638 strong-side pants-pocket and of course the 442 on the ankle. When it's over 75 , in my old age ,it's just too hot to carry anything but J-frames.

I carry 16 rounds loaded, and a spare 16 round mag. I also have a 17 round and two 10 round mags as well.

This is the real deal, used by a man out there in the real world-- every day. There's no "if it's winter I'll carry my Glock" nonsense, and no agonizing over "what's the latest in fall concealed carry fashions" holsters. Just one gun, and the ability to hit what you are shooting at. Just one holster, molded to the gun by constant carry, not some thermo-plastic "cup holder". And finally, enough spare ammo for a reload so you are not left with an empty gun when you think the dust has settled and the smoke has cleared.

My carry ranges anywhere between a 7+1 sub compact 9mm with a spare mag, to a 16+1 full size .40 with 2 spare mags. I base what I carry on where I'll be, when, and who with. Everyone should carry what they're comfortable with. I would rather go with my gut than carry what a guy 2500 miles away thinks I should carry. BTW, I also have substantial food storage. Maybe I'm a silly fool in some peoples eyes, but ignorance is bliss!

How I dress dictates what I carry. And what I carry dictates how much extra ammo.

Summer time a j frame and a speed strip and a Kahr CM9 with extra magazine.

Cooler weather when I carry a full size gun, I carry one or two extra magazines. Either a 9MM or 45 so the capacity varies. The j frame or Kahr goes along too.

These days some, not all, of the shootings involve more than one shooter with hicap guns. These shootings normally happen at events that I don't frequent but the events are sometimes held at places where I do go to.

We just had two shootings last week with multiple rounds fired and many people shot. Both were in public places with lot's of people around.

As Oldman45 said in an earlier post, some depend on the "spray and pray" method. If I just happen to get caught in that kind of situation, I certainly don't want to run out of ammo.

Carrying extra ammo doesn't bother me so I might as well. I don't think it will happen and I hope it doesn't. But I can't always rely on what I think or hope.

If I'm just carrying around town, it's 5 in the 642 and 7 on the speedloader (12 total, only because 8 don't fit in the simply rugged pouch). There's also a 15+1 9mm in the car with an extra mag, if I need it.

If I'm on foot and away from civilization, outside of town hiking or whatnot, either the 9mm with extra mag (30 rounds), or the 686+ with 2 moonclips (21 rounds) are on the belt.

It doesn't hurt to carry more than enough ammo, but I'm comfortable with just my little j frame. Extra ammo is no substitute for situational awareness and using your brain.

I mostly carry the 7+1 in my Colt commander. Although the Kahr CW-40 with its 6+1 is becoming my favorite. I always a carry a second magazine.

This gets asked periodically. I've been reading threads here for what, eight years now? Comes up every sixth months or those. Breaks down to the optimists/those who like it convenient that tend to carry a J frame and maybe a reload... and then folks carrying things ranging from several 1911s, N frames, etc.

It's really all about numbers and how one responds to niggling little doubts. One simple way to figure it is that there will be at least one or two attackers, one out three shots fired will strike a target(optimistically), and perhaps half of those will cause a cessation of hostile action.

The most I've read of being fired by an armed citizen in this country in modern times was 105 rounds in a matter of minutes. The shooter was an FFL named Beckwith whom some guys tried to rob.

Most ever? Probably around 400rds that one guy, a former Union Army soldier, fired with his Henry repeating rifle during the wagon box fight. As some accounts have it, the guy was in the habit of carrying his Henry and no less than 1000rds of ammo out and about in a wagon.


And apparent ancestor of mine died in the Fetterman massacre, they found around 50 empty casings around him and another man, both of whom had Henry repeating rifles. Contemporary reports of blood at the scene suggested that they'd hit perhaps eight of their attackers. Shrug.

I carry five rounds in a J frame M36 or M60 and six rounds in my off hand hip pocket on a Bianchi speed strip.

Sir, FWIW, I normally carry whatever fits in the gun plus at least one reload. The actual number depends on the gun.

Whatever the gun holds that I'm carrying and that varies from 5 to 16 rounds.

Six in the Model 10.
Six in a speedloader.

If I am carrying the Rossi, it's five in the gun and five in a speedloader.

Just three in my 442... Pocket carry with five gets a little heavy. Besides, no badguy is going to give you a 1,2,3 go.....

I agree in principle, a winner of a gunfight, in which one person wants to STOP or kill the other is the one that keeps calm and puts bullets on target.

However, the winner of a firefight, may not be the gunfighter or the skilled professional but the person who throws up a wall of lead, forcing the attacker or defender to retreat, or to be out of the fight due to injury or death.

A firefight is where one throws shots to kill/wound or suppress attacking or defending fire.

It is a viable tactic in war, and by the news reports today is a used in police work evidenced by the high number of shots fired in active shooters, defense against police ambush and cases where the criminal appears to have gotten the upper hand.

It is NOT that 'youth' have substituted accuracy for capacity but rather capacity on both sides have introduced a tactic reserved for high capacity shooters only. That is why many jurisdiction are trying to ban high capacity magazines to allow only the police to have access to this advantage.

In NY, that was the intent to ensure only the government has a monopoly on bringing a firefight to a gunfight. A gunfight is a few well placed shots.

Saying that, in NY you carry 1+7 or 8, plus as many multiples of 7 you want if carrying a pistol.

I carry 5 in a J and a speed strip with 6 more. I don't know what type of law enforcement work Olman45 does but I don't think a 1911 with no reload is sufficient for most LEO types. Their chances of getting involved in a firefight are much higher than mine.

Same here. Would much rather have a reload I didn't need than need a reload I didn't have.

I carry a 640 Pro with a speed strip with 5 rounds on it. Sometimes also drop a NAA 22 Pug mag in my pocket in a holster depending where I'm going. I know not the best backup but better then nothing.

Five in my 442 and two loaded five round quick strips.

Depends on what I'm carrying

M&P Shield 1 magazine and one reload= 16 rounds

S&W6906 1 magazine and 2 reloads = 36 rounds

S&W 4006 1 magazine and 2 reloads =33 rounds

SOON TO BE M&P 9mm 1 magazine and 2 reloads = 45 or 51 rounds (depending on which magazines I can find)

Magazines are small. Unless concealment is the prime consideration why not carry 2 ?

Generally a 3913 7+1 and a 8rd second mag. =16

Lately a 6906 12+1 and a 15 rd. extra mag, with another 15 rd. mag. in the car.= 28 or 43

Five in my 37 and one speed loader. I'm retired and mainly stay in good areas.
I'm rethinking it though and may start carrying one of my 1911s and two spare mags. Times are changing and my FIL's neighborhood is going down.
It'll be easier too now it's getting cooler and jackets to carry a 1911 and extra mags.

In retirement a 442 plus a 6 round speed strip. If I need more than I'm probably someplace I shouldn't be.

UPDATE: The 442 has been replaced w/a 340PD, still w/one speed strip and on occasion an LCP w/a spare mag. I do keep add’l ammo for both in the center console of my car.
