My bride carries a 3 inch Ultra carry Kimber, chambered in 45. Despite all the jokes, 3 inches is just about right.

S&W BG 380, waistband.
I don't like purse carry. I forget my purse half the time I take it somewhere, and the other half of the time I choose not to take it.

ETA: Waist carry is not possible in a dress. I'm looking for a solution. I might have to deal with a concealed carry purse because of this, but they have none with high fashion flair

House gun? Same one, and the Mr. has a Taurus 40, and a remington 12 gauge is upstairs with us too.

Mine carries a 4513 tsw(no rail) Gordon Davis holster, home ,throws a cat at the perp and grabs the 870 in the pantry.Cat usually does the trick!
To clarify the 4 purebreds act as landmines and she uses the 12 year old ghetto bring home, for the throw,20 lbs and can stand and put his head up on the table,he knows thats his job.

For home defense, she likes the S&W. Along with it being a .357 magnum, the visual is a pretty good deterrent itself. The .22 Browning is something she really enjoys at the range.

I loaned my Ruger LCP to my wife about a year ago to see what she thought of it and that was the last time I had it in my hand. She shoots it well and it's small enough that she doesn't leave it home all the time.

My wife carries a Model 431PD in 32 H&R Magnum in her purse. If I'm out of town on business travel she puts my Model 627 on the night stand.

Me! I'm serious. I have tried to find the perfect snubbie for her. I tried an ultra-lite 38-special with downloaded granny-rounds and I also have her a 327 MAG which she can shoot 32-shorts and 32-longs in fairly well. 22's are generally out of the question due to trigger pull. I have installed reduced hammer springs in them all and have even ordered her a 317 due to it's light weight.....then I will have to see if I can get a reduced pull spring for it.

Like I said above....she prefers to have me around carrying, but I hope she thinks the little 317 is "cute" and hardly weighs as much as any 2 of the lightest items in her purse. I refuse to get her an auto...I am strictly a revolver man. Wish me luck.

Take a look at this youtube video about a thigh holster for women. It might be what you're looking for while wearing a skirt or dress.

My wife carries a no-lock S&W 442 .38 Special in a dedicated carry purse. We live in a rural area so around the house it's a U.S. M1 Carbine with a 30 round magazine.

My wife's favorite handgun? Whatever I'm carrying - she "doesn't like guns" - so I'm so jealous of some of you guys. When push comes to shove, like if I;m out of town, she'll reluctantly keep a loaded Model 34 on her night stand.

Regards,

Dave

Dave,

It's a mixed blessing. My wife never wanted to carry either, until two drunks tried hitting on our 11 y.o. daughter last year while my wife was loading groceries in the SUV.

She now has this 3913 for carry and bedside:

100% reliable.

I'd have to say my wife isn't too much into firearms, but does want one in the house for SD...just in case. I believe she prefers a 9mm (that's what her ex-husband used to have and she has shot before), but not sure yet. We are taking my 4006 & my 40c out this weekend or next weekend to the range so she can shoot it and see what she thinks. I might also see if I can rent a M&P 9 full size as well for her to try and see which she likes better. If she ends up preferring the M&P 9FS, then I'll just get one and that will be the home SD firearm. However, if she doesn't mind the 4006, then I just might get the M&P 40FS anyway to go with my 40c.

I just want something there she will be comfortable using and won't have any issues manipulating if she needs to (racking slide, clearing a malfunction, no issues with recoil, etc...). As long as she is protected, I don't care what type of firearm it is.

If something like that happened to my wife, she'd probably fast draw a credit card and shop them to death. Paper or plastic she's expert in the use of both and deadly in a retail environment.

Dave

My wife has kept a M67 loaded with 125gr. Nyclads at her side of the bed since I convinced her to retire her Luger 30 years ago. She knows where the Mossberg 835 stays and how to use it.

My mother, who hated guns for as long as I can remember, now keeps a 4 1/2" .32 HE handy. Arthritis makes shooting anything larger problematic, but she manages the .32 Long well enough. She keeps a German Shepherd/Lab cross and an Airedale as backup.

Her mother kept the same .32 HE and a Savage 30-30.

HER mother preferred a Colt Police Positive .32 New Police and a gas pen.

On our first date "the lovely and charming" told me she thought my 38 special M-60 was cute, and its' been hers ever since. On a rare occasion, if I ask nice, she will let me borrow it.

My wife of almost 20yrs(October 19th) came with her own guns and safe. She knows how to use all of her's an mine, so its a non-issue here. My 13yr old son is the same, he has a rather substantial collection, and is familiar with all that are in the house(All of his reside in my safe), yet due to his training and competition he is competent with firearms, and understands the safety, and use. My 11yr old daughter is working her way up slowly!!!

Twenty years ago I bought my wife a Taurus PT111 9mm 10 shot. She never carried it, but kept it under her pillow.
A year ago I bought her an S&W M-642 PRO .38 Spl 5-shot. She actually CARRIES that one about 50% of the time!

Recently I handed her a Smith M-43C .22LR which she now takes with her every time she leaves the house!

So WHAT exactly is the ideal "wife" gun...the one SHE CARRIES!!!!

NOT the one YOU think she should carry!
I fully agree!

My Wife is definitely into what is easy... Easy to shoot & reload, that is. She tried several revolvers and hated them. She much prefers Striker Fire pistols, without initially understanding WHY she preferred Striker Fire over SA, or DA handguns.

I can understand her not liking the PT111. My Wife also hated that one (specifically, the trigger).

Exactly... I tried to pick a gun for her once... She hated it... So now, she buys her own firearms.
Her club competition pistol is an XD-Service, but her Carry pistol is her G26. She really loves that G26.
She does like my Shield9 and shoots it very well, but she doesn't like it good enough to trade her G26 for one.

My wife quickly adopted the Glock 43, after I picked one up. That's okay with me, because I couldn't get use to it. It's the grip angle thing, I guess. However, some of my best target shots ever, from 7 yards, came from the Glock. I just had to pay attention to it. She previously carried a S&W model 60, using 38 Special.

My wife doesn't carry outside of the house, but her house gun is a BG 38. She prefers the revolver format and likes having the laser.

Default Wifes HD piece

Trophy wife has M60 357 using Hornady 38 Critical Defense. She couldnt pull back the slide on a 9mm and liked the simplicity of the revolver. She loked the sp101 but we found the like new 60 at a cheaper price sooo.. it now wears Altamonts
PS. The Starter Wife was pretty good with a 3" hvy brl M36. Surprised a few good old boys with some decent marksmanship down Hunter Army Airfield, Savannah Ga

I'd swear my Blondie was a beat cop in a former life; since we got together almost 6 years ago now she's shot everything from light snubs to full size 629s and the one I can't seem to pry away from her is the plain-jane late 50s/early 60s Model 10 with the skinny 4" barrel and standard wood grips.

Since commandeering it she's become a better shot with it than I am!

Looks like we've resurrected a long dead thread, but since we did, my wife has a Sig P038 and a Bersa Thunder 380. She has her LTC but rarely carries. I've been trying to encourage her in that regard. What's the point of getting the license if you're not going to carry?

The wife likes a 642-1 nl in either a Buckheimer on her hip or in her purse.... on the night stand.

My dear bride carried a 2 1/2" Mod 629 in her purse for CCW and home defense. She was also an excellent shot. She usually carried in her purse. She passed away 2013. I miss her.

Now I see what the problem is. Twenty years ago, Bonkers got a hole in his head. Comically, this post is the only one he's written that makes any sense. Usually the husband buys the guns.

Now, to add value to the thread, story-time:

I know a guy that was getting his wife a carry gun. Winds up with a little Taurus .380. Miserable selection--she has arthritis, and can't even rack the slide, much less shoot it comfortably.

Now, I know this guy to normally have decent taste in handguns--S&Ws, 1911s of various quality makes, Rugers, Glocks, Sigs...if it's decent, he's got it. This was the first Taurus I'd ever seen him with.

"Why'd you get a Taurus?" I asked.

"It was only $275 out the door, brand-new!" he exclaimed.

I opined that perhaps it was unwise to tell his wife that when shopping for her defensive handgun, he picked the one that was cheapest.

If I'd been thinking clearly, I would have suggested that if he gave me one of his Dillon 650s, I might be too busy reloading to tell her myself!

Or ask how many of the original posters have the same wife 5 and a half years later.

My lovely wife carries a 9 shield with green Viridiren laser in a carry purse, a lcr 38, bedside and a m&p 22compact in her recliner.
The m&p 22compact (not m&p 22) is her favorite.

M10 standard 4" barreled round butt M10 for my bride. She was a decent revolver shot in her thirties but suffered a stroke at age forty which diminished her hand strength. She can still cycle the M10 six times before her hands give out. She will not even consider a semi-auto pistol. Despite her disabilities, she is still the strongest and most intelligent woman I have ever known.

Just wondering--have you tried some different grips? They can help tremendously when it comes to trigger pull. I presume you already know all about spring kits and such.

My Mrs. Normally uses a Gun Toten Mamas purse to carry a 2.5 inch 642-1 or her Browning 1911-.380. She is a good shot and has practiced hand position on her purse to get to the gun quickly, without notice. She also carries OC spray and a Kershaw Speed Safe knife in her pocket.
Her home companions are a Mossberg 20 GA pump and a 4 inch S&W or Ruger loaded with +P .38 Special ammo.

My wife doesn't have a CHP so she doesn't carry. But the gun we have in the house for her is a M & P 22C since she is recoil sensitive. We shoot every week so she has become pretty good with it so it's better then nothing.

When this post first emerged I mentioned my wife carrying a CZ82. Not long after that I found a trade-in 6906 that she likes. However she tired of trying to find a holster set-up that worked for her. She still considers the 6906 her "Range Gun" but a few years ago we were at a fund raising dinner and I happened to have a winning ticket for a firearm drawing. I told her to go see if there was a CCW pistol on the table and she came back with a Ruger LCR in 357. She's only shot 38 Special through it but she loves it. Normally she uses a pocket holster but her purse also has a holster built in. Not sure why she likes the Ruger better than one of my J Frames but she does.

My wife has S.C. and Utah CWPs. I think she can carry in about 38 states. She carries a Glock 43. This past summer she went to The Liberty Bell in Philly. Loaded for bear. In her purse.
