Default Speer Ammo Primers

I hear a lot of people saying if you have the lighter springs for a light trigger pull on your revolver you need a softer primer like Federal. How are Speers primers in comparison? Like their Gold Dots. Would you feel comfortable with the ability of lighter springs to hit their primers hard enough for personal defense?

Speer primers can be pretty tricky. Some of them are stamped with different letters, which means who knows what. I get very nervous when I see that on my duty ammo. Their older primers had a reputation for being very hard. I don't know if CCI primers which are sold to the public as a component are the same that they use in Speer factory loads. If they are, it is my experience that the newer ones are not as tough to ignite as the older ones.

My suggestion is that you set the mainspring tension of your carry gun such that it will fire all commercial primers. In an emergency you can not guarantee that you will have the more sensitive primers available when you need them.

The M66 that I used for IDPA and ICORE has a light pull on it and it never failed to detonate the Speer Lawman 158gr+P TMJ that I used.

I cannot speak for Factory Ammunition, but the CCI-Speer primers for reloading can be quite hard. They are also very reliable, having said that.

My K-38 has a fairly light double-action and if I load CCI-Speer primers on my Dillon and go shooting, I will get some light-strikes. I believe this to be because the Dillon does not seat the CCI-Speer primer to it's "bottomed out" depth and so the hammer-strike sometimes does not detonate the primer but just seats it a little deeper to set it off on a restrike.

Now, if I handseat CCI-Speer primers as a separate operation using my Lee primer seater, well...they work just fine. No misfires whatsoever. Whether this information helps you or not, I don't know, but it has been my experience with their primers in reloaded ammo.
