Default Non lethal self defense tactics

Heading to the Iowa State Fair. They will not honor my Missouri ccw at the fair. I am thinking of getting some sort of spray that I can carry. After the news of the Wisconsin state fair trouble, I am at odds with defending myself. I will be carrying a knife, and a couple of pens that I could use as a stabbing weapon. What kind of defensive spray would you recommend? I would like to carry a can of wasp spray but I need something a bit more compact. Anything else anyone could recommend?

Good luck! These mobs are targeting fairs and such. I would advise you stay VERY aware of your surroundings and keep a path out of groups where you can hide behind buildings or obstructions. They seem to move quickly. Spray may just make them more violent.

I prefer the "Less Leathal" methods as you can kill someone with anything. A large belt buckle can go a long way. Wear pants that will stay up on their own. If you need to defend yourself, unbuckle, give it a swift pull and start swinging in a figure 8 pattern

Thanks Lost Lake on your parallel post. I guess I too was naive.

We had a incident several years ago where I live. The game was "king of the hill", and a white person was hurt pretty bad. It was captured on video in a parking lot surveillance camera. Now we have downtown surveillance cameras.

We had a shooting at the county fair here last year. Teens with guns.

The Iowa State Fair had a similar incident last year during the fair. I found out about it with your hyper link in your parallel post about flash mobs. I have heard there might be another "beat whitey night" rumor circulating in Des Moines. I seen that additional security will be added.

Thanks Springfeildkid585 for your input.

Mu cousin who is a LT in my city gave me a good idea when traveling where my CCW does not cover me. A very large, heavy , metal cane filled with something such as lead. Kind of like an undercover baseball bat. I also keep a Benchmade and one of those GG&G "Tire poppers"
Not that I am the best, but been doing Judo for a long time, so I would have to think it would help a bit in combat....

Carry a cotton candy around with you...it's sticky enough to slow down any attacker and the cone handle makes a nice forward striking weapon.

If you're already prepared to stab someone with either a knife or pens (2) and still looking for more defensive gear, maybe a less volatile venue would be more appropriate to visit. Didn't realize it was so bad in Iowa. Maybe you should just play the odds, not worry about flash-mobs and enjoy a day out at the fair.

The problem with most "pepper sprays" is there designed for limited encounters, i.e. one or two individuals.
Something you might consider though is a collapsable baton like the ASP, they are small, fairly light, and pack a formidable punch when used correctly. Aim for the extremities (arms,& legs) and crack it like a whip.
Another option is too leave the fair early. I know like most folks your just going to have a good time and hang out (I go to the county fair here myself), but these "mobs" tend to strike quickly and seem to be well organized. So be wary of large groups and avoid getting to far from a building where you can take cover!
Nothing may happen, but I'm a firm believer of preparing fir the worst while hoping for the best! Dale

Krav Maga... it may not help you in time for the fair though. It is the official martial art of the Israeli Defense Force. It is rough and tumble stuff intended for the streets and not for tournaments. Krav gave me my first ever formal class on groin kicks and eye gouges. Good stuff but show up in shape.

In Wisconsin a knife is a weapon and cannot be carried concealed.... So is a club, a cane, most anything that could be used as a weapon is considered a weapon....
