Possibly irrelevant but posted with good intentions.

I'm ok with Glock triggers but they ain't a 1911. The pre-bump 3G's seem best to me.

I don't have any M&P's but I sure don't like the looks of that hinge and suspect I wouldn't like using it.

I recently tried the non-hinged non-little-safety-part plain-old-ordinary trigger on a P365 and found it not bad at all.

Ancient thread, but I have a statement to make which logically speaking, ought to settle the debate.

I carry a Smith & Wesson Sigma SW40VE during cold weather.
Whats Your S&W EDC-edc_duo_hq-jpg
Look familiar? It should, because it's basically a clone of the Glock 23, but with a different grip that's much more ergonomic. S&W actually had a lawsuit filed against them over the similarities between the Gen 1 Sigma SW40F and the G23, but it was ultimately settled out of court. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery as they say, and even the modern M&P Series of semiautomatic pistols is actually for the most part just a hybrid design between the Sigma and the SW99, making it a pistol which blends together the Glock design with elements of the Walther P99, so anyone who trash-talks Glocks yet praises the semiautomatic M&P pistols is just being ignorant.

Both brands are great, so you can't go wrong with either. Personally, I prefer Smith & Wesson semiautomatic pistols because they fit my hands better.

Neither. I'm a Hi-Point man. It's what we real operators used in the sandbox when I was with the teams..........but I can't really talk about that.

You didn't mention which specific S&W models you were comparing to Glocks. I do not own any Glocks (never have) but if I were a uniformed LEO carrying exposed on a duty belt, I'd get a Glock. As much as they are ugly, brick-like, clunky and thick, they are also one of the most reliable pistols ever made!

Not saying there is anything wrong with some of the S&W models but the Glock has a long proven track record that is hard to beat. While the S&W Shield and M&P's are great pistols in their own right - I'd still have to go with the Glock for the ultimate reliability. Looks, feel and shape I think the S&W wins.

Being a Long time 1911 guy glocks just do not fit my hand nor do they feel right and most importantly they do not point like a 1911. Many times my every day carry is a lightweight Commander in 45 ACP but few years ago looked at held and pointed a Smith Shield 45. Came home with me and now carry it if travels warrant it. Shield shoots well out to 150 yds which surprised my Grandson and I. Now I usually carry a Smith 638-3 rated +P as its very concealable and light weight. Most of my friends have glocks, have tried shooting them but no good so I’ll stick to what works for me.

The S&W of today is a caricature. Their current production revolvers and automatics are guns I would never personally own.

I have 25 GLOCKs for a reason and carried one flavor or another of a GLOCK for my entire LE career for a reason. I owned a first year production M&P .45 and it was horrible. The M&P line is cheaper and has a greater profit margin for S&W, but it sucks as a gun. Nowhere near the quality that was in my 4506-1 or 3913.

I have one S&W 642-1 for walking around home and sub-division. It is my only remaining revolver.

I have four Glocks. One dedicated for nightstand duty, and three others for carry and / or backup. A G26 Gen5 is my primary carry once I leave home.

(And an M&P15 TS (and Remington 870) for more serious business.)

Each firearm has a solid basis and reason for its selection and its role. (They also correspond to the firearms I carried as an LEO.)

YMMV, and that's fine.

I'm carrying a S&W SD9 with a black slide and steel fiber optic sights. It feels better in my hand than any Glock.

My EDC is a Glock 42. For my body geometry, it just "fits." And at the range, I'm a surgeon with it at 15 yards.

In truth, the M&P and Glock platforms are both excellent, tried-and-proven, and have undergone multiple iterations to work out the bugs. On paper there's not much to recommend one over the other, so at the end of the day I'd go with what you're most comfortable with.

Revolver Guy that I am -
I did just buy a Glock 43x.
I really wanted a Model 45 but those big butt Glocks do not fit my hand!
The 43x fits my hand, medium size for carry, 10+1.
That’s why I’ve been on a 9mm buying binge.
I’m loaded up pretty good with 38, 357, 44Special and Mag, 22 LR + Mag.
But low on 9nm. Mostly for my Runt Kahr.

[QUOTE=I wonder what they would say about Glocks at the Glock site. [/QUOTE]

The Glock forum is just like us. Inverse sure but room for all and plenty favor S&W. Ruger guys are the same too in my estimation. Yeah I have S&Ws, a Glock and some Rugers.

While I could go on about the issues we had with both the sample Glock we had for T&E, and the issues we had with Glock HQ even while they were trying to sell us guns ("There's nothing wrong with the gun, you're just too stupid to operate it!" Direct quote from the then LE sales manager), I won't.

I will point out that Glock leads the known universe in negligent discharges. A short stroke trigger with a relatively light pull-even before someone screws with it-and the safety on the trigger is NOT what a thinking person wants for defensive use.

Perfection they aren't.

I have Glock 22 and 23 as well as Shield 1.0 in 40 and 9mm. Glocks stay in the bedside table one on my side one on my wife’s. We think the Shields are easier to conceal. I carry a 40 she carries the 9. Different tools for different jobs. My favorite to carry or shoot in a SD weapon are my J frame 38’s. Just a preference I suppose. I keep my 686 in 357 beside my chair.... sometimes I just like to reach down and I know it is there... also the most fun on the range.

I've never been able to get myself to like Glocks, but I also don't like the S&W SD models, either. I stick with revolvers, old-school 3rd-Gen Smith semi-autos and the Shield line. I don't feel under-gunned.

Smith and Wesson or Glock?

The answer is obvious: a 5" S&W N-Frame 629 .44mag! Everything else pales in comparison.

I have a G19 and a 9 MM EZ. Not exactly apples to apples but I much prefer the EZ, better grip, better trigger, the EZ handles recoil better than the Glock( a surprise I do not understand). The EZ has a grip safety, mine has no thumb safety. The EZ is a tad lighter than the G19. The EZ is hammer fired so not apples to apples, it has an 8 round mag vs 15. I may even carry the EZ, no plan to carry a Glock of any kind. Glock does sell sights for their guns, S&W does not. Both guns shot low, have to file the front on the EZ. Still gotta go with the EZ.....

This has been a Glock-free household since 2005, and proud of it. Handling a Walther P99 killed Glocks for me, and ever since then picking up a Glock was like holding the business end of a 2x4 in my hand. At the same time I indulged my tastes for a slim stainless 9mm with the S&W Third Generation guns.

Friends don't let friends even look at Taurus guns and discourage them from Glocks as well. Tell them to show some class.

Default Love third gens.....

I'm not a policeman, so I like the setup of the S&W over Glock as I like having a thumb safety. In other words, for a civilian, S&W is for me. I've shot Glocks and don't care for their feel but I will say that they DO function extremely well. My Shield feels perfect for me.

Just my opinion:

There is only 1 semiauto pistol action that approaches the reliability level of the S&W double action revolver: It's a GLOCK!

Folks complain about the Glock trigger, but for a guy with 20 years of double action revolver experience before picking up a Glock it has never been a problem. Folks say Glock isn't innovative: Well, gee: IT AIN'T BROKE so why fix it.

In 2000 I decided to go the .40 route, after 20 years of .357 Mag as my primary home defense arm. I shot a DA Smith .40 for a year and a .40 Browning High Power for 6 months. Neither of them ever felt 'right' to me. I admit that back then there was only one striker fired option, but the Glock was the answer for me.

These days I shoot primarily 9mms and .38s, but with modern ammunition those are effective options, cheaper than other calibers and allow for multiple hits more quickly. But let there be no doubt, I shoot them in Smith revolvers and Glocks.

Depends on situation. If urban a Glock 21. Every other situation a N frame. I could handle the Glock being marked as evidence, God forbid, but would become sick if done to my S&Ws.

I sold my Glock 30 to buy a M&P 45.
For me at least, the M&P was a big disappointment.
Just didn't shoot as well for me as the Glock.
One size doesn't fit all.
I'd never decide for someone else.

Glock vs S&W? Easy! If I wanted to carry a brick I'd go to a brickyard and get one or two or a dozen or so. Do I carry because a gun looks good or because it shoots good or maybe just maybe because I believe in supporting Made in America?

Truth is I don't own a Glock and wouldn't. Not because they are made overseas or some factory owned overseas, but because I want a pistol which I trust with my life. That said, I'm not a fan of striker fired.

MY first semi-auto was a 1911. Still have it and love it. My first S&W semi-auto is a Model 59. I now have two of them and one of them (the first) is my go to for home defense. My everyday carry is a Kimber Micro-9 and I'll likely go down with it in my hand. Unless it's the day I decide because of where I'll be traveling I carry the Colt Officers Model .45. Then I guess it's the other guy who does the going down.

S&W FOREVER

And that Ruger sure looks like a Kel Tec P3-AT

Carried a Glock for about thirty years.

So did everyone else.

Never had an operational failure.

No reason to change.

Don't imagine the report would be much different from a S&W carrier who could say the same thing.

Wow I could have said precisely the same thing myself. I do LOVE their revolvers - always have and still do. But their autos have always turned me off. There's just something about them that doesn't click with me. My only semis that I carry are the G17 or the G26 and that's not very often lately, it's usually the 3" M686+ anymore.

Maybe S&W 1911's are junk; I really don't know, never owned one. I'd still buy one over a glock. A good 'smith can tune anything..... except for turning plastic into steel
In the case of Glock, plastic CAN be turned to steel. All it takes is money. Aftermarket steel frames are readily available

35 years LE. Started in with S&W revolvers for approx 6 years then transitioned to S&W 3rd Gen semi's for the 24 years. The past 6 years with a Glock. While I love my S&W revolvers and their 3rd gen autos are outstanding, for CCW / off duty, I reach for my Glocks and have been for the past 30 years.

Years ago at Our gun club a Glock rep was demonstrating His pistols. Had quite a few LEO's present and several curious members. Loaded a 17, shot two rounds. Dropped the gun in the sand and dirt, stepped on it several times, picked it up safely and with proper grip banged it against the table a few times, shook it, and then proceeded to empty the magazine without a failure. Installed another mag and ran it dry. I wouldn't do that with My Colt 1911 and I don't think any Smith would survive that test. I do not own a Glock and I carry My 1911.

I own and have tried many brands. When the FBI downed the .40 S&W and the prices dropped like rocks, I started buying them. I have Glock, FN, Beretta, and Springfield Armory. All are factory and haven't been customized. My Springfield Armory XD Tactical fits my hand, never fails, reduced recoil and faster recovery, and accurate.
My bedside and chair side guns, however, are 66-4 bobbed hammer double action only in .38 special. I like a gun that I can shoot in the dark and not have to worry about safeties and mags, etc. I keep two 66's and a J-frame stashed around--all the wife has to know to do is pick it up and pull the trigger should the need arise.

I agree w/ MurphyDog, both are viable, reliable accurate guns and it boils down to personal preferences- of the two, I prefer the M&P- simply more ergonomic for my hands.

That said, my 2 preferred polymer striker brands are the CZ P10 and SIG P320……

Default Glock safety

Before I retired I carried a Glock model 33 for duty. I had an aftermarket safety installed on it by a man in NYS and I never had a problem with it. I recently bought a new Glock model 19, and for some reason he can't install a safety on this model.

AFAIK, both sell millions of guns, and they work. Yeah, even those “modern striker fired” ones.
Get the one that suits you.

I have converted back to Glock, primarily because I have become a big fan of 10mm for pretty much everything. If there was a 10mm M&P I might be tempted....for now I'll stick with my Gen 4 G29....

I own and carry three Smith & Wesson’s, depending on the season. But my Glock 19 in a Milt Sparks versa max 2, is the finest concealed carry handgun ever invented.
