As an old 1911 guy, the S&W M&P offers the thumb safety. The only way to get a thumb safety on a Glock is an after market chop job. If you are not a thumb safety fan the S&W still has the better grip. I put my Glocks in the safe and currently carry an S&W M&P 45 mid as my every day carry.

Gotta be a trick question. I'll vote for...S&W! Many Glock Depts are switching to S&Ws. I also dig the available safety on the S&W.

You actually have friends that own Glocks? That's different.

No chum or pushback, but this is a S&W forum, what kind of answers do you supppose you'll get. Not being a brain surgeon and all, I'm thinking you might get different answers if you posed the same question at GlockTalk.

Just my humble opinion, I would rather have my sister work in a cat house than carry a glock, just sayin'.

I was a Glock basher once. Then I had the opportunity to send a few magazines worth of ammo down range. When I realized I was shooting better with my buddies G27 than I was with my M&P, I stopped the bashing and bought my very own G27 a few days later.
Recently, I had moved away from the G27. I have become spoiled with my tiny carry guns and it sometimes just felt a little bulky when carried IWB. Since I liked how it shot so much, I decided to trade it for a full size G22. Well, I got my G22 and gosh darn it, it shoots better than the G27. Funny thing though... I didn't trade the G27. I traded my M&P instead.
I like my Glocks more than any S&W semi autos I've encountered. Yep.. it's true. I liked my M&P... my 457 has it's place.. hated the Sigma.. I kinda miss my old 1006. I love my S&W revolvers and if I had to pick to own only one handgun, it would be my 681.
My point... I dunno. You got to go with what works best for you.

Gag... Yeah, I love S&W revolvers. Never thought much about them until I bought my wife a Model 60 and myself a 442. But I'll take a 1911 made by S&W over a glock any day. Maybe S&W 1911's are junk; I really don't know, never owned one. I'd still buy one over a glock. A good 'smith can tune anything..... except for turning plastic into steel

i have both m&p and glock and imo there is so little difference between the two, glock sites are better, m&p mag release is better, etc. they both are excellent shooters and good carry weapons. i would be hard pressed to make a decision which one is better.

Have both. Both a very good guns. I have owned Glocks for years and am very comfortable with the feel of the gun.
I use the M&P for IDPA shooting instead of my beloved Glock 22. Why? No special reason, just wanted to change. My scores and times have stayed consistent.
I carry a 1911, Glock 27 or Kahr CW-40. No matter which gun your "friend" chooses between the Smith or Glock, he will end up with a quality handgun.

Glocks are the Honda Accord of the firearm world. Everyone knows about them, they've been around forever, they're cheap imports (and look it), but gawd are they boring!
Tell your friend that if he/she wants to be just another sheep, well... baa-ah!

Own both. If I was looking at a 9mm / 40 cal., I would choose a Glock, as the trigger is better then the S&W, and grips are comparable, if different. As noted above, proven Honda Accord like reliability.
In a 45 acp, I would pick the S&W, as the grip is much better feeling then the large frame Glocks, and its a lot easier to fix the stiff trigger on the S&W the to change the grip feel on the Glock.

Because they are cheaper. Most PD's will buy whatever is cheapest at the time. In many ways, the third gen Smith autos are far superior to the Glock but Glock undercut pricing and ran the third gens right out of the market.
When considering plastic, stiker fired autos, the Glock is still the best but if I had to carry a M&P or XD my only question would be, "What time is lunch?"

both fine guns. I prefer the trigger on S&W because it is a bit stiffer and less likely to shoot when not intended.

I would say that the only thing superior about the third gen Smiths would be as a paper weight or small boat anchor.

I have both.... glocks are ugly as a shaved cat, but they work very well. My Smith revolver (no lock) collection keep growing 10 a year, love those US build work of art. Glocks are like work horses of pistols. But for SD its hard to beat my G30 with 10 rounds of 45 acp.

I don't prefer S&W Semi Auto Pistols due to the problems with a new 645 that the "on and off switch" on the right side of the slide kept falling off and the attitude that S&W took.
I'll take a Glock anyday over a S&W Semi Auto Pistol.
That said, I'll take a S&W Revolver (pre lock) any day over most Pistols. I like Semi Auto Pistols, just not S&W or High Point.

I have a 3rd Gen Glock - the 23. It is an excellent pistol. I am a little leary of the 4th Gen Glocks right now. The normal new model bugs have not been fully addressed.
I have two full sized M&P's. One in 45 and one in 9mm. The are wonderful weapon. Both of mine have the external thumb safety. These weapons are both accurate and reliable. Surprisingly, the 45 has very little felt recoil.
Going forward, if I wanted another polymer gun I would probably buy another M&P. I believe it has taken the successful concept established by Glock to a whole new level.

The Glock 35 with steel sights is about as perfect as a service grade semiautomatic pistol can be right out of the box. No other pistol in the world has its superb trigger, reliability, ergonomics and ease of disassembly. Anybody can disassemble a Glock down to the last piece and replace any part, making the gunsmith irrelevant. It can win a world championship match or excel in battle, right out of the box with no modification whatsoever and no need to be broken in. As far as I'm concerned, S&W's M&P simply can not compare.

Glock makes a gun that works. S&W makes guns that work and look great. I have several of each and when I carry, I carry S&W. When I go to the range, I carry S&W but if I am carrying a visitor to the range, I let them use a Glock since anything they do to it will not make it look any worse.

LOL. He probably did say that back then. Then he realized it wasn't perfect and went on to design the Hi-Power. If he had lived long enough he would have designed the Glock.

Well you got lots of opinions good bad and otherwise regarding both makes. Im surprised S&W got trashed as much as it did but at least you received opinions of both. I wonder what they would say about Glocks at the Glock site. I just think its amazing that some of the worlds finest guns are made in countries where the average citizen is prevented from owning a gun. so why support those systems by purchasing their products. I also can not understand why some US makers have their business in States like the one my favorite gun maker is located in when other states not only provide a favorable business climate but also are gun friendly.

Over the last 22+ years, I've owned every make, model and caliber of pistol and revolver in creation. The Glock is the only one that I can literally take apart down to ALL 34 parts with nothing more than a simple punch which is basically all the Glock armorer's tool is.
Smith & Wesson 3rd gen semi-autos are absolutely incredible pistols. I've owned several over the years and wish I had 'em back, every, single, one.
Smith & Wesson revolvers are my pride and joy and I carry one every single day of the week - a J frame model 38 NO DASH Airweight Bodyguard, circa 1985/86. If I'm vertical, it's in my pocket.
The Glock has been scoffed at for the last 25 years, but it's funny how every single firearm manufacturer in exsistence has made a polymer framed, striker fired weapon of some sort.
Mockery is the best form of flattery.
I rank the Glock right up there with the 1911 as probably the most copied handgun. While a 1911 is a 1911 is a 1911, polymer pistols do vary in their looks and sorta, somewhat in the mechanisms, but when it comes right down to it, a plastic pistol is a plastic pistol is a plastic pistol.
With all that being said, I'm a cop and I carry a Glock 22 on duty. I have for the last 20 years and I doubt if I'll ever carry anything else. And yes, I've tried the Smith & Wesson SD, the M&P, the Sigma, the XD, the HK USP even the Taurus PT24/7. While they all have their good (and bad) qualities to them, they just ain't a Glock.
GLOCKS - THE DAMNED THINGS JUST WORK! PERIOD!
Besides...a Smith & Wesson revolver is what you show your friends. A Glock is what you show your enemies!

As far as plastic guns go I will take a Gen 3 9mm Glock over any 9mm M&P any time. I have owned all of them and I can honestly attest to the fact that 9mm M&Ps are not worth the trouble. Maybe S&W will resolve their issues someday but until then Gen 3 Glocks rule (Gen 4 seem to have a lot of issues too, so I would stay away at the moment).

It all comes down to what fits YOU and nothing else. Glocks are a fine firearm but they don't fit ME. M&P's fit very well and mine have proven themselves many times over. My Full Size .40 has over 15,000 rounds downrange in USPSA/IDPA matches and has never missed a beat.
Many of my fellow competitors have switched from Glock to the M&P simply due to fit as well.
I am not bashing Glock's by any means...the optimum performance always seems to come from having a good fit.

M&P grips do feel a little bit better. They had to improve something after 20 years of studying and copying the GLOCK design.

That's a matter of individual taste. The first time I picked up an M&P, I HATED the grip and preferred my Glocks. Now, I'm sort of neutral on the M&P.

I had a friend tell me that the "tenifer" process used on Glocks can not be done here due to EPA regs. I happened upon this forum that discusses tenifer/melonite process. Used on Glocks/S&W respectively.

Old smith as I'm seriously considering getting rid of both of my glocks to make space and raise up the funds for a 1950's K38 and a Smith 645/4506 and keeping the old series 80 I was thinking of getting rid of since well atleast I can gawk at it and its lovely finish, cant do that with a glock.
although the 17L is still a good gun and I'm kind of thinking about looking into having a less intrusive safe action trigger put on it and having the extractor tuned so it doesnt throw cartridges everywhere at everyone on the range.
on the otherhand its still a glock, but its also a first gen with german proofmarks on it, eh maybe just the 23 then since I never use that damn thing.
but he is right though the damn thing just works, cant fault it for that.

Holy thread bump. Since the 2.0 I say the trigger is just a bit better than Glock after you shoot a few boxes of ammo. Side by side in the store you really can't tell as I was doing. I still went apex to ditch the hinge foolishness. Before the apex and after shooting the trigger was better than my Gen 3 G17 that I've got plenty of time behind with an aftermarket connector plus polished internals.

If it is for conceal carry, get the one you don’t mind loosing since it will be taken as evidence.
If it is for competition shoot, get a sig 320x5

Comes down to which one feels better.
If you like having lots of mags, Glock is the better option. If you want something from an American company, S&W is the ticket.

Exactly. That's why I own one. I don't carry a glock, but I keep one at my bedside every night when I go to sleep. The simple reason is that my Glock has gone bang every time I pull the trigger, and feeds perfectly, plus it has 15+1 ready to go. I wouldn't go shoot a match with one, but in terms of reliability when you really need it, I'll take the glock or a good revolver. I haven't found a revolver yet that holds 16 rounds though.

Maybe it's my hands....
...I don't like the way Glocks feel. I don't like the way they look either. I don't like the 'safety' setup. Glock doesn't make revolvers. The plus is that they are very reliable. I just happen to prefer everything about S&Ws. The M&P line and 3rd Gens are super in my humble opinion.

Personally I have a glock 26, a glock 30sf, and a S&W 640-1 j frame .357 revolver on my CCW. I don't care what glocks look like, I carry them for the reliability and I actually prefer not having a thumb safety on a self defense gun. Although I chose glocks over S&W when it comes to striker fire guns, I carry my j frame revolver more often than the glocks these days. It comes down to personal preference and what fits you the best.
Added a pic of my 640-1 since I know everyone loves pictures.

The OP hasn't been here for 9 1/2 years. And we still haven't convinced several million Glock owners of the superiority of the M & P.

I have always been a huge S&W fan as this is all my dad owned growing up. However, when I was looking for a CCW I went between the M&P 1.0 and the glock 26. Both guns are very reliable, however, the glock fit my hand better, I shoot better with it, and the glock has more capacity. Also I am in California so I can only buy the 1.0 unless I pay double the price for a 2.0 from a PPT. The M&P 1.0 I was not a fan of the trigger. I can hear it now I know most people hate the glock trigger too lol.
Please fill me in on how the M&P is superior to the glock. I know this is a S&W forum so I do not expect to find glock fans here. But I would like to hear why you feel the M&P is superior to the glock.

Well, it is...and it isn't...depending on your personal circumstances and preference.
Mechanically, aside from the manual safety option, they work about the same. I've shot both (the M & P much more than a Glock 17) and accuracy with both is fine. Then you get down to individual tastes, like the grip angle...and that's where the conflicts between the warring camps start. There's no settling it; just try both, pick one and be happy.

My 2nd CC pistol was a Glock 19. I had gone in search of my first-ever polymer pistol, and I couldn't beat the price for the combination of size, weight, capacity, reliability, etc. It was a good gun, but not without a few minor problems. It was pretty reliable, but not perfect, and I didn't shoot it particularly well.
After 4 years of EDC, I decided to move to something smaller, and bought myself a Shield 1.0. The difference in ergonomics was (for me) huge. The Shield fits my hand far better than the G19, but I know that's a bit of apples & oranges there. Still, if I were going to get another compact polymer (like the G19), I'd likely opt for an M&P Compact of some sort.
