Default The problem with Conceal Carry Bags

I have a big problem with the "tactical" bags from companies like 5.11 and Maxpedition.

Beyond the fact they scream "I'm carrying a gun!" they are also very vulnerable to a thief coming up from behind and cutting the shoulder strap and making off with the entire bag.

A better solution is using a camera bag like one from Pacsafe. Not only is it more discreet but the shoulder strap is reinforced with steel cable to prevent cutting.

I'm not so sure a criminal will keep his knife sharp enough to cut through a strap with one quick swipe. Heck most of the folks I know can't keep their knives sharp enough to cut butter.

I spent lots of time talking with Criminals in almost 34 years of LE. I never found one who associated a bag or buttpac with gun. Most were concerned with dope and money or property they could sell for money or dope.

I always thought the Maxpedition bags could make a decent diaper bag. I do not remember if I thought of this myself or if I got the idea from someone else. (Actually it sounds like something GatorFarmer would have recommended?!)

I prefer a plastic grocery bag... with a few snacks thrown in just in case I get lost on my way to the range.

They may call it "tactical", but it's still a man-purse.

Off body carry in any bag is useless.
If suddenly attacked by a bad guy, you will "NEVER" get your gun out of the bag,
as it will likely go flying out of your hand.
The best and safest carry is always on the body....IMHO.

Good point...
and don't forget to add: you can accidentally leave a bag behind, or it could get stolen if you leave it for even a couple seconds.
I have pondered the idea of off-body carry...but the risks are too great, and if a gun is needed....you will never have time to retrieve it from a bag. (a bit of force-on-force training will convince you of this..)

You guys who get to carry on your body all the time are really lucky.
Where I live it gets hot, real hot, dadgum shootin' hot.

The prefered attire for many retired LEOs and Off Duty LEOs in Texas is shorts, T-Shirt, sandals or tennis shoes, and a ball cap in the dead of summer. Some what difficult to hide a medium to larger hog leg on an average LEO frame. So, many go with buttpacs.

On my last trip to the Texas LE Olympics (taco/TexMex Food eating contest was my speciality) in San Antonio it look like a buttpac convention had come to the down town area.
Average afternoon temp that week was 104 degrees with some really high humidity.

The "man purse" thing is kinda old. I have stuff and I want to take it with me. Gone are the days when all one carried was a wallet, a comb and car keys but that was a myth anyway, we've always carried lunch pails or brief cases.

The difference with a CC bag is you wear it, you don't carry it. You don't put it down and pick it up.

To all the "quick draw" artists out there, I think it's a waste of time and can be dangerous. Are you really walking around on such a hair trigger that you can go from chatting about the weather to employing deadly force in a fraction of a second? If you expect a life threatening attack around every corner perhaps you might look into sedatives instead of firearms.

Soldiers still walk into ambushes and their situational awareness is a bit higher than the ordinary conceal carry license holder.

This conversation reminds this old Rocky Mtn boy of all the "vests" that are worn at a gunshow, where no one is supposed to be packin.

Best vest in this country for concealed carry is a Filson IMHO!

I carry a RedRock shoulder bag all of the time and no one suspects that I'm carrying a Walther 9mm in it. It's not what you carry, it's how you carry it. If you're wearing a holster on your belt and always favoring that side, someone may ask you what's the matter. If you appear to be completely comfortable with your surroundings, no one is going to notice.

I have always thought that anybody (women too) who carries a gun in any type of bag, briefcase, pocketbook, etc. is ASKING for trouble! Just another thing for yo to keep tabs on, easily grabbed or stolen, slow to get your weapon out of, and in general, I think it is a very bad idea. Just my .02 cents of course, but my feeling is that if you are going to carry, then carry on your person.

My wife often carries in a Maxpedition Fatboy that she has rigged with a dedicated holter. It takes her about .5 second more to get the gun out than me with an on body carry. You're welcome to try and take it away from her but I sure ain't trying anytime soon on anybody's behalf

The great thing about it is that if she suspects anything is wrong she can slide her hand in the dedicated compartment and literally walk around with her gun in her hand under everybody's noses. The gun can then be drawn as quickly as if out of an open carry OWB holster. As with any other style of carry, taining and situational awareness are the key.

Sorry but when I visualize this, a mental image of Sip carrying a Crown Royal bag hits me. Perfect concealment for his gun.

Even in super hot weather, I find that I can easily conceal o M60 in the pocket of a pair of Cargo shorts or under a "T", Hawaiian, or slightly baggy Polo shirt. No need for a Man-bag.

I was issued a Blackhawk Weapon Fanny Pack when I went to the desert. Like most of these type things, it screamed "this is where I hide my gun" and I hated it. I begged to just buy my own and was allowed to after a month. While it was very well built and had extra retaining besides the belt it was just a dumb idea. I look at man bags the same way. But I hate to admit how functional it was. The M9 and three extra mags didn't begin to fill that thing up. Either way, my partner and I both looked like matching dorks wearing the stupid things.

Just me....a lot of talk about not being able to draw the weapon when needed, but isn't that what training is for? Or is the concept of off-body carry so assaulting to the senses that we as a community won't accept it? I admit I am not an expert by any means and the only off-body carry I have ever done was with an MP5-N in a small back pack...and yeap I did a lot of dry runs before I began to carry like that...but I digress that was Iraq.

I agree with the LE guy from Texas. Unless your packing, like I do, a 36 in your front pocket, then you're going to need a pouch thingy.

Method of carry aside. If you allow someone with a knife to get close enough to cut your shoulder strap, you're so far behind the curve that your method of carry doesn't really matter.

They have their place. I use one when hiking short distances when I do not want to open carry and concealing the traditional ways may be a PITA (e.x. National Parks). They don't look out of place there and access is very quick. You can have your hand on your firearm right in front of everyone and no one is the wiser. They also carry the resto of your gear that you can't carry in your pockets. I like mine for what I do with it.

Amen. Backpacking shorts with big cargo pockets are great for concealment of a handgun in hot climates. I personally find the M60 or 640 or any gun weighing much over 16 oz. to be a bit on the heavy side for pocket carry, thus I prefer something like the 442 or the 340 or one of the many pocket semi-autos (sacrilege!) for that application, but whatever works, as long as it doesn't pull your shorts down around your ankles, is good.

I have a fanny pack and a man purse by Roma Leather. They each come in handy at times.

But I disagree about warm weather to a point. IMHO there is never a reason why one can't pocket carry a j frame. But, if your a dedication full size gun guy, then pocket carry ain't for you.

Actually pocket carry AND a fanny pack might be the best option.

I've been using an Uncle Mike's Belt Pack. However, though it's designed to carry handguns I normally use it for my cell phone, car keys, pens, etc. This frees up my pockets for pocket carrying a J-frame.

I like it because it's not bulky or goofy looking like a fanny pack, and wouldn't look out of place with a shirt and tie. I also have a similar, and smaller one, made of leather by Roma which is even better if you need to look a little "dressed up" instead of casual.

Certainly it's not the "perfect" carry method, but it's another option that we have available.

I wear a fanny pack quite a bit. I'm only authorized to carry a Sig P220 or a Glock 27, neither one is the best choice for pocket carry. When its 110 degrees and the choice is to either ankle carry, wear a coat, or strap on the fanny pack the choice is easy.

I can carry a gun, spare mag, creds, a cell phone, and even handcuffs. The "screams gun" thing is a joke - I honestly think I could get a Bedazzler and write THERE IS A GUN IN HERE in shiny rhinestones on it and no one would pay any attention.

I mostly carry a S&W 642 so it's easy to conceal. but I do make an effort when I buy things like a jacket, gym bag, or a laptop carry cases to find something with a pocket that I could use for cc as an option.

The London Bridge fanny pack was better than the Blackhawk pack. Better shape and more colors. It looked more like a fanny pack than a gun bag. The newer model for the Beretta lost some of the discreet carry because it was a little larger. The last ones I saw were made in "tactical" colors instead of normal colors, not as discreet either.
