Default need clarification on interstate transport

I've had an Ohio CCW permit since they were first issued in 2004, but rarely travel very far and virtually never out of state. Consequently I've never had to deal with reciprocity and related issues until now.

This Friday I'm planning a day trip to Indiana, so I looked up and reviewed the laws and etc. on the handgunlaw.us site and the state's website. It looks pretty straightforward to me, but I'm somewhat puzzled about what is required of me by the Federal law on the interstate transport of firearms.

If I'm reading correctly, I have to stop before I cross the state line, unload my CCW and lock both the gun and ammunition in the trunk. After crossing the line, I stop again and reverse the process so that I can carry in my vehicle again. This must be done whenever any state line is crossed. Is this correct? Somehow I think I've got something confused.

I fully recognize that it is unwise to seek legal advice on an internet forum. On the other hand I know that many folks here have loads of experience with this and know the ropes.

Thank you very much for your assistance.
Andy

I'm 99.99% sure you can sail right on through, provided your license is honored by both States. I always do! The only time I've stopped, unloaded and cased is when entering a State that doesn't honor my license.

You do have to comply with the laws of the State that you're in and some of the requirements are pretty goofy.

Wow . . . that is a literal interpretation of Title 18, I suppose. To that extent, I've never done what you are suggesting. Nor do I know anyone else who has done that. That is indeed a federal fire drill! :-)

I look at what the state regulations are that I'm am traveling in . . . and try to comply with those (unless I would happen to be traveling through a state that does not permit weapons. In that case, I follow Title 18 as long as I am strictly traveling through that state.

Also check the notification laws.
Do you HAVE to advise a LEO you're carrying?

You may be correct regarding actual interpertation of Federal law but.......who is going to stop you? The Feds are not out there making traffic stops, but I would think that if you have a permit in State A that is valid in State B, no stopping, unloading, locking and reversal is needed.

Thanks, fellas. Maybe "transport" and "carry" mean different things to the Feds -who knows?

You've saved me a bit of extraneous horsing around.
