And I wrote to Starbucks thanking them for their level-headedness and cooperation with us law abiding citizens. They responded in a kind manner.

I may be mistaken, but I think it was Wal-Mart that I read had rescinded a "No Firearms Allowed" policy after a customer informed them they would be liable should he not be able to defend himself on their premises. I, too, refuse to do business with anyone who posts such signs.

Sorry feralmerril, is that for me? I'm in Lost Lake! A tiny, tiny, tiny burb outside of Beaver Dam, which is north east of Madison. I can be in Madison in 25 minutes, North Milwaukee in under an hour....

I would assume you were from Merril previously???? My has that town changed.....

Kind of ironic, you would think a place that is filled with hippy hipster liberal college students all day long on their iphones and mini laptops would make a policy against guns, but they've done the opposite.

As did I. They responded with a very nice email and sent me a card for a free drink of my choice.

When people ask why I will pay extra for Starbucks coffee when the same quality can be had cheaper, I tell them their policy on not allowing their stores to ban carrying guns inside is well worth a few extra dollars a month.

Please let me know if you think this is absolutely nothing or if I took this wrong... At about 21 minutes into the video is where the Captain says all city buildings will be posted and UNFORTUNATELY parks cannot be posted, and then he says it's unfortunate from a SAFETY standpoint that they cannot post city parks.

t's a shame that they want to ban firearms in all City (Municipal) buildings which I take to mean buildings that the city conducts business in. I am concerned that at "pools" they will ban firearms in buildings (restrooms are buildings). To me they are expressing concern because Winconsin is new to this and the cops are overly worried about CCW. In Florida when they first passed CCW I heard the same concerns and frankly I expressed a few of those myself. It soon became apparant that armed citizens were not a problem 99% of the time. They posed little threat to LEO's and they posed even less of a threat to fellow citizens. I became a major proponet of CCW having been on the LEO side when it came into being and my attitudes changed almost immediately. Captains in Police agencies depnding on seize can be the guy under the Chief or they can be several ranks below..For the most part they are considered middle management. In the NYPD Captain is or was the highest civil service rank...Ranks above captain are appointed ranks in that department....At my Department Captains were "District" commanders or commanders of special units such as detectives....hope that helps.. As a retired Law enforcement Officer I am going to write to the Captain and let him know that from a law enforcement perspective what he can hope to experience. I will also gently try to assuage his concern about guns in City Parks. Appleton is a University town. Liberal in thinking but a lovely place to live. I have been there....There are nice folks there.....almost too nice and all to eager to become victims.....I got a kick out of the Captain thinking that citizens might need the same firearms training that LEOs undertake...frankly cops don't get enough firearms training and they have lousy hit rates in actual shootings.....but I wonder if he thought Patrick Henry, Thomas Jefferson, U.S Grant, Daniel Boon, Crocket, etc needed firearms trainging...My guess is that they got it from their fathers....long before it was illegal to exercise our Second Amendment rights.

Crime nationally is down 6% according to the FBI. Permits are up as are gun sales. I agree with russp1. The chief is totally out of line and probably needs a good butt kicking via letters to the appropriate people above him; a visit from the NRA; and a concentrated effort from permit holders to visit all the stores which post the signs and educate them about the reality of CCW patronage. This chief indeed seems to be a politician and not an enforcer of the law. How about an Occupy Police HQ?

In most jurisdictions, it would likely be a trespassing charge (a misdemeanor in most cases), not DC.

I wrote to the good Captain featured in the video interview. He did not seem unreasonable to me rather overly concerned about the new CCW law. Cops tend to not take change well feeling comfortable with the status quo....I told him my experiences with CCW when implemented back in Florida and how in Texas it poses no problem. I also let him know that here in the Great State of Texas CHL holders are welcome to show their license and bypass the metal detectors and enter the State Capitol Buildings......we can actually go into the highest buildings in the State yet some municipal buildings deny us entry.

Applenton is a very liberal town so hopefully they will learn that we gun totin lovers (clinging to our bibles) wont pose a threat and there really will not be blood running in the streets

IIRC Wal Mart put up those signs several years ago...a boycott and letter writing campaign remedied the situation in VERY short order....

The more I read about this issue the more confusing it is. Obviously every state is different but it appears that, unless such restrictions (guns not permitted in store) are sanctioned by law there is little a store owner could do except ask the person to leave. Sort of like a sign requiring shoes and shirts. There was mention of a fine that sounds like a civil process. Has anyone heard of any examples of people being fined/charged with this "offense"?. Obviously law abiding people will, for the most part, obey this requirement while the criminals will obey it to the extent they obey all other laws.

Wisconsin already has a pre-emption law signed by former Gov. Thompson prohibiting local municipalities from enforcing gun laws stricter than the state standards. That was done because of Dane county trying to stop all arms traffic through it during deer season.

yeah, but that law never really dissuaded them from trying anyhow.
Thing is it will take right around $100K to challenge a conflicting law in court. That being the case the preemption is essentially worthless.

The law states that it is illegal to enter or remain on a property when you have been given notice that concealed carry is not allowed.

'Notice' can be either verbally or by posting a sign at the entrance.

So if they have a sign posted and you are seen with a weapon inside, you have broken the law and can be fined.
