Thumbs up K Frame for CCW

Most guys know I am a revolver fan, I own semi-autos and I shoot them and may carry one CCW but I like the feel of a revolver. My small CCW will be a 642 w/o lock. However since I have afew K frames I may decide to carry one now and again, probably a 19, 66 or model 15. Though I did see a gentalman on Sunday who was carrying a 6 inch K frame in a cross draw holster. N Frames are to big for me to carry. But I do like my model 19 2.5 and feel comfortable with it.

I have a 3 inch model 13 I like too but I will have to order a holster for it.

I've spent a few years wearing a K-frame, and it served well. Use yours in good health!

I frequently carry a 4 in 67-1 SB in one of Lobo's newest IWB holsters. It has the belt clip relocated rearward a couple inches so it doesn't add bulk at the cylinder location. Has a hammer shield for my skins sake, and is made of horsehide which is a little thinner than cowhide and horsehide is less affected by perspiration (think summer in GA, 90+degrees and 90+ % humidity). Seems to work fine. I can even carry one of my 10 or 12 snubbies in the same holster but Ray warnes that this could allow for the barrel channel to collapse. A piece of wooden dowel may help here.

I requalified yesterday with my 2.5" 66-2, among other guns. It doesn't get any better than that in a concealable carry gun, IMO of course. I love my 2.5" 19-4 too, but its getting to valuable to risk!

Good luck with your decision! All the revolvers you mention are excellent choices. Regards 18DAI

My everyday carry is a Model 66-2 with 2.5" bbl.......

Shown below in a Mernickle Cross-Draw Holster, which is the only way I've carried it with the expection of pocket carry now & again.
For that I use a Mika Pocket Holster.

Spring/summer I go with a J frame in the front pocket. Fall/winter gets a 19, or 66 on the belt.

I carried my 66-0 2.5 " for a long time in a varity of IWB OWB holsters. It is now semi retired since they're increasing in value. I replaced it as my EDC with a 3" Ruger SP101.

Like many here...

I have 66 snub for IWB/OWB carry..

and a 340 M&P for IWB or pocket carry.

Love the 66 the best, but not always easy to effectively conceal (when around those who are huggy, etc..)

a S&W "K" frame in a cross draw holster will make a very good ccw.

If you can find one, my favorite CCW K Frame is a M12 snubbie. Bring 'em back S&W

Out of all the guns I own, I only routinely carry only two. 90% of the time it's my 2" Chief's Special M60-7, and the other 10% it's my 3" M65 (stainless version of your M13). The M65 only gets carried when I feel the need for the heavier 357 Mag's because it makes no sense to me to carry extra weight and bulk just to load it with one more round of the same 38 Special ammo.

Just MHO of course.

I have a variety to choose from, but my M65 3-inch is one of my favorites to carry.

I also have a nickel M19 2.5-inch which is pretty, but prefer my carry guns with fixed sights.

Holsters for the 3-inch K-Frames can be hard to find, but the Galco Combat Master shown with my M19 would work pretty well for both lengths with just a minimum of barrel protruding from the bottom of the holster.

I use the Galco Combat Master for my 19 2.5" and a 3" 65 fits very well and the bbl just peeking out the bottom of the holster.

Great holster my favorite high ride, in summer especially.

I have used both a 3" Model 64 and a 2.5 inch 66 as conceal carry guns. Both work very well for concealed carry.

I carry a 66-1 2 1/2" or a 66-3 3" 95% of the time...Walther PPK/S .380 on the odd occasion.

I had a 19-4 snub that I foolishly traded away. I am in the process now of trading for a Model 64 snub. I have plenty of options but its hard to beat the feel of a K frame snub.

Depending on my mood, I rotate among these K/L frames:
2" Model 15
2" Model 64 DAO with bobbed hammer
3" Model 64
Model 65 Ladysmith
3" Model 67 Powerport
315 Nightguard
242 (L frame)

Probably my favorite and most frequently carried is the 315 Nightguard.

I pack lately either the Chief's Chief's Special, which is becoming famous beyond my expectations, or a 19-4 that a recently traded for, and has fast become a favorite.
Before these two, I carried my 10-5 with 4" pencil barrel and fake stag magnas. Hard to beat a k-frame for every day carry.
I must say, I had a 19-5 snubby a long time ago, and these days I wonder what it would be like to have that sucker again. Seems I have shopping to do.

I carry a 64 2" RB quite a bit. It's a wonderfully accurate revolver.

Most of the time I carry a 642, but every once in a while I like to carry my 3" 65. This is my 65 in a Wraith IWB holster by Seth's Gun Leather. Excellent holster. With a good gun belt I've worn this rig as long as 16 hours with great comfort. My 65 is usually loaded with Buffalo Bore .38 Special standard pressure 158gr LSWCHP.

I looked for a 3" 13 for so long that I finally gave up and settled for a 3" 65 when CDNN had a great deal on them.

I've carried the 13 a lot, in a Don Hume 715M IWB. I'll eventually make my own tuckable IWB for it.

I'm carrying this 66-5 at the moment IWB-crossdraw, though it does have some compact grips from Brownells on it to keep it from printing.

66-5.jpg

A 3" is a little nicer for crossdraw, but this one works fine for me

Interesting to find this thread. To see that I was in the process of trading for the Model 64 snub. I didnt realize it took me so long to get. I finally got it from the guy in April of 2013. I have to say it was worth the wait. Of course today Im carrying my 3" 65.

I have a 2" mod. 66 I like but it's just too big for carrying. J-frames are perfect. I wish Serpa made a blackhawk holster for K-frames. I'd probably carry it more.

I started out 38 years ago with a 2" RB M10 and carried that for a few years. I then sold it (which I regret) and bought a M60 which except for the 1 less shot is a lot more convenient and much easier to carry.

I do however go back to a K frame 3" RB M65 when hiking in the woods where there are Bears. I stoke it with Buffalo Bore HEAVY 180 grain .357's and as long as it is in my OWB belt holster it is quite handy and comfortable for all day carry.

I wear a Galco paddle holster for my 2.5-inch 66-3, which allows me to carry cross draw when I'm driving or seated, yet allows me the option to carry strong side whenever I feel like it.

I carried a 3" Model 10 HB for a while. I enjoyed it and frankly, it was possibly a bit more comfortable in it's holster (a Bianchi 111) to carry than my autos. I have since moved on to autos only, as I like to keep things simple and consistent. But, that K-frame really was not a problem to carry and conceal, certainly not any more so than my compact sized autos (S&W 6904 & 6906).

My law enforcement career ran from the very early 1970's through the late 1990's. Revolvers were the most common handguns, and many agencies required them. I carried a 2.5" Model 19 for many years, but have also used Models 10, 12, 13, and 64 quite a bit.

In my opinion, the 3" Model 10, 13, 64, and 65 are probably the most practical defensive revolvers ever made. Simple, rugged, and reliable.

Personally, I find very little difference in comfort or concealability between the square butt and round butt versions. If I had to choose just one I would probably opt for the 10 or 13 in 3" heavy barrel with round butt, fitted with factory magna grips and Tyler T-grip adapter.

Personally, I avoid the use of magnum ammunition in the short-barreled revolvers. The enormous increases in muzzle blast, muzzle flash, and recoil are (in my opinion) unacceptable, especially in light of the relatively small increases in terminal performance of ammunition fired in the shorter barrels. A good .38 Spl.+P load is much more controllable. I especially like the Federal 158-grain SWC-HP load (so-called "FBI" load).

A good pancake holster design worn just behind the strong-side hip on a sturdy belt is hard to beat for comfort and concealability. Add a 6-round SpeedStrip pouch, or the old 2X2X2 pouch, and your carry rig is complete.

A couple of years ago I came across a bunch of local police department trade-in guns including several 4" Model 28's and 4 Model 64 2" RB's. Price was right so I bought them all. Kept a pair of the 64's for my personal use.

You don't actually carry that thing while you're wearing a suit, do you? I can't imagine that you could pull off "concealed" while wearing cargo or 5-11 pants with a knife clipped to the front pocket, an instructor belt and a shirt over that monster.

Ricky T looks pretty normal to me. Add a nice fishing shirt, or other tail out shirt and he is in business.

Then we have the Deluth Light Workman's Vest. I have 2 so far, my everyday wear, and my dress up nice one, both in Tall to cover a longer barrel revolver. With a Lobo Pancake I can carry a 4" N Frame with the right grips.

I live in the Missouri Ozarks. Everyone I know has a pocket clip knife in a front pocket. I need to sharpen my Buck Spring assisted opening knife. I have cut too many hay bale strings with it.

If Ricky T lived in my neck of the woods he might even have a speed strip of 38 shotshells in his left front pocket.

Bob

My primary carry is a 3 inch Model 13. I carry it in an old Bucheimer Concealer.

There are Bianchi Speed Strips holding Speer .38 Spl +P "Short Barrel" GDHPs in the dump pouches.

Thumbs up cold weather

I carry this 65 4" when the weather is cool enough for a coat or hooded sweatshirt. I do carry it sometimes with a long tailed polo shirt. It' always the M37 with everything else though. That Alessi holster rides just a little higher than my Bianchi 5BH but it don't matter with a coat. I love my 65.
Peace,
Gordon

When I'm not pocket carrying my TCP or a J-frame, my Rossi 971 (think K-frame with a square-butt J-frame grip) IWB is my most common carry. As an alternative I occasionally carry my 3" M65-5 - and use the same holster for it or the Rossi.

Default MDL 19's

I carry a Mdl 19-4 snub every day and as of late added a 642 as my BUG. Now that Texas has open carry my 19-8 will be my open carry gun.

On the S&W forum......old threads never die.!!!!

Lucky enough to have bought some 3" 66s back in the late 80s and find another 3" 66-4 around the turn of the Century... add a Sparks Summer Special for around town or a Bianchi 111 crossdraw for the mountains... w/ 1 or 2 Safariland II speedloaders in split-6 carriers..... and I'm good to go.

I carry my 7 shot 4" 357 AIWB a lot. UPDATE: This post was in 2016. I haven’t carried the 627 lately but I do carry its 2” brother a 617 once in a while.

I carry a 3 inch 13 everyday. Comfortable and hides well

So does mine. It is my primary off-duty carry. "Good choice!" to quote an Oklahoma Highway Patrolman.

My RB M10 4" gun conceals nicely in a Wild Bill's Fusion paddle holster when wearing a suit. A Galco 2x2x2 ammo pouch completes the rig. When wearing a tux, I break out the old Bianchi #6 suede clip on holster and throw a speed strip or two in my strong side pocket.

I carry one of my (two) 3" model 64-3's pretty regularly. Not all the time, because the two j-frames I have are more comfortable for carry - but fairly often.

Actually, I've threatened to get rid of the j-frames and just use the 64's for carry on many occasions, but I just haven't been able to force myself to do it. Yet.
