What have you used and how did you like it, I like the idea of the gunvault safes, but I have heard really bad things about them! Most importantly, it needs to work when you need your firearm.

This is the one I have it is an ADG sport. The batteries last a long time, has a key option, and 9volt posts on the outside just in case. I have had this box for 4 years or so with no issues. When the batteries start wearing down I had to put code in twice to get it to open, at which time I replace the batteries problem solved.

I have a Stack On Mini Storage Vault, which sits on a short dresser right beside my bed, it is pretty stout (28 pounds) has 2 shelves with plenty of room to get gun out without banging it on things (like Gunvault latch that has a big U-shape hook standing up on the door. Can change the code for entry to suit your needs, has key back up. I like that you can have it either beep when you enter numbers or have it silent. I have had mine 2 years still on the same battery, and I open it every night, and close in the morning. Other people must like it too, as it has a 4.8 out of 5 stars with 40 reviews at Cabelas.

Things I that I didn't like about the GunVault, has a history of going through batteries quickly (perhaps fixed on newer models.) The cost was about double for the 2000 model, which still has less space. And that latch on the door, if you see check it out on the 1000 model, which really stood out as being in the way.

I'm using a GunVault 1000. It secures rock-solid to my floor with four 6" bolts--enough to make me confident that it would take an extremely motivated thief and a very solid crowbar to release it. It is more than secure enough to keep curious kids out as well.

The combination buttons haven't failed me yet, but if they ever did there is a key entry as well. It's small enough to be unobtrusive, but big enough to hold a HD handgun and a SureFire light. The "Deluxe" model even has a little light inside that comes on when the door swings open, to help locate the safe contents in the dark.

I'm sure there are more expensive options out there, but for the price (less than $100 shipped) I am very satisfied.

I have a Stack-On with Biometric Scanner. Its not in my nightstand, but its very close by. It also has a key option. I like it b/c my wife and I are the only ones that can gain access to. Finally, you can bolt it down. Inside completely lined with foam. When I get my next pistol I might have to get another one.

Academy had them for $169 over the holidays, so I jumped on it. With small kids, I thought it made the most sense.

Only thing I don't like is it beeps when it opens. If someone IS in the house, they'll hear it.

I only keep one inside it, and its there to keep little fingers off. I have a hone alarm and sleep upstairs so I am very confident I could open it in time. While not asleep I had to test the use one night, luckily it was only my sister who was living with going outside to pitch ex bf stuff I'm the middle of the night. I keep the key to the stack on long gun locker in my pistol box. I didn't use to keep them under lock, but my 3.5 yr old nephew really likes guns. Soon after my sister in law and nephew moved in I decided to keep guns locked up from him.

I really need to get one, I just know my wife wont let something sit out in the open ontop the nightstand, and we have a sleigh bed so no way will she let me mount it to the bed rail and I dont think there is height room underneath. My only option is in the drawer of my night stand I just need to do some measuring that I can fit safe in drawer and have room for it to open and get my hand easily in to pull the weapon out.

You should just turn your bedroom into a gun vault.....Problem solved!

Bear in mind the bedside safe not only protects your HD gun from children, but also from thieves. Someone breaking into your home in the daytime when you're out at work or running errands is almost certain to check the bedroom for firearms to steal.

Also, just because a home doesn't have children doesn't mean that children will never be in your home. It only take once for a mistake to happen.

I too have a Stack on safe in the bedroom. This is basically to keep my bedroom guns away from my grandkids. I have a real safe in the family room. The stack on can be opened by any teenager with a long handled screw driver. To make mine a little more secure I have a dresser along side the safe, that is hanging on the wall. You have to be laying on the bed to see the safe. I cut two, 2 by 4's that are about a foot longer than the safe is wide. I put long lag bolts into the wall studs. I then painted the 2 by 4's that are attached to the wall, the same color as the wall. After the paint dried I secured the safe itself to the 2 by 4's, again using long lag bolts. The safe is at eye level. Easy to open & close and handy for jewelry, spair cash, and loaded handguns.
If your battery goes dead you must have the override key to open the safe, and get to the battery compartment. Change your battery once a year and you will never have a problem with the safe not opening.

My kids are now in their mid twenties and while still at home they are quite gun savvy. Just keep it in my night stand when at home and it's with me when I am not. My other weaponry lives in the safe when not at the Range, but my SD gun is always ready for work.

IF you have young kids in the house or frequent visitors, a gun safe is the way to go.

Good advice. One other option is to simply leave it unchambered. Easier to jack a round that to fumble with the safe when the heart is pumping.

Top Draw

Not too far off of what I did. Turned a small closet in the master bedroom into a gun, scuba tank, jewelry, important document safe. Installed a solid door with an exterior key lock and pinned the hinges. I keep my 9mm Sigma in the night stand at night (no kids) and my 442 on my hip during the day. Everything else is locked up.
