Default 442/642 size vs. M&P 340?

Guys, I put this here instead of the revolver area because the basis for the question involves a concealed carry holster. Hope it's OK here.

I've been considering another J frame for CCW to go along with my 442 and 642, and I thought it might be nice to have a MP340 for the ability to use .357 once in awhile. One of my favorite IWB holster manufacturers however show different catalog models for a 340 as opposed to the 442/642. Is there a difference in the dimensions somewhere, perhaps the cylinder thickness or something like that? If so, that might change my thinking.

I've obviously tried the S&W website but I can't seem to find detailed specs. If I had 30-40 minutes to spare I guess I could hold on for customer service, but they were a little testy the last time or two I spoke to them. Of course, in their defense I was trying to get information as to the availability of no-lock models and I'm sure they get tired of hearing about that.

It is because of the taller front sight on the 340 M&P, as well as the shrouded ejector rod....

ok....maybe I am guessing about the shrouded ejector rod.., but I am pretty sure that the much taller front sight on the 340 would call for a different holster.

I was searching for a kydex holster for my 340 on Comptac's site, and the 340 is the only j-frame that you must specify for a particular holster.
All the other j-frames fit a one-size-fits-all holster...

Ahhh, enlightenment! That computes, thank you so much.

I should say that Comp-Tac was exactly who I was talking about. The CS rep couldn't tell me why, only that that's how they showed it.

Hey DonDee,
If you end up buying a Comp-Tac for the 340...will you post a review here?

I just bought a Comp-Tac Minotaur for a subcompact Glock, but the j-frame holsters are a different model...I am eager to see one!
Thanks

I just picked up the 340 M&P to add to my 442 and all my holsters, pocket, IWB & OWB, work.

I sure will. Say, I'd appreciate a review of the Comp-Tac Minotaur for your Glock as well. That's how I got started looking at them in the first place, looking for holsters for my G30 and G36.

I just went ahead and ordered a no-lock 340PD a few minutes ago myself, should be here Weds. or so. I'm pretty excited.

Thanks for the heads up on the holsters. I have two Mika round J-frame pocket holsters on order and was hoping all would fit.

Default M642/M442

I choose these over the M340.

M&p 340 - THR

I started this thread regarding the M&P 340 almost five years ago.
I have a 642 which is ok for holster carry but I found it too heavy in the pocket.
I would put forth the proposition that 97 percent of the holsters out there that are rated for 2 inch j frames would work for said 340/360.
The XS dot isn't that tall. Size wise they are virtually identical.
IMO the 340 with a ct grip is the most versatile snub nose on the market yet today but that's just me.
