Default Question to conceal carry holders...

A friend and I were talking about carrying concealed and we started talking about our different states requirements. We were wondering if...do you live in a state where you have to shoot a course of fire, and if so, the gun you shot with, is the gun you must carry. If you would list the state and it's requirements, if any.
Thanks.

KY--You do shoot a course of fire. Must hit 11 of 20. Can shoot with any gun and carry any gun you want to.

In Texas if you shoot a revolver your license is specific for only a revolver.

If you shoot a semiauto, 380 or larger, you can carry ANY semiauto or ANY revolver.

In Ohio, the course is really just the NRA Basic Pistol Course.

You can shoot any HANDGUN (no airguns) you want. The state has no knowledge of or control over what handgun you did the range exercise with or carry.

Here in Washington State, you do not have to shoot a course of fire and their are no handgun restrictions.

My personal opinion is that there should be some live fire course with a pass/fail rating.

In Tennessee you can shoot whatever you want for qualifying. The course of fire is 48 rounds on a B27 silhoutte target. Any round that strikes the black counts as a hit. Passing score of 70% or better is required. There are 12 rounds fired at 5 yards, 12 rounds at 7 yards, 12 rounds at 15 yards, then back again with 12 rounds at 7 yards. There were some in my class who shot .22 lr handguns.

Once you receive your Handgun Carry Permit you may carry any handgun you wish to carry, and you are not limited to the gun you qualified with.

I think a pass/fail rating is a very good ideal also. It is just being responsible.

Along this same line of thinking, for states to have a reciprocal agreements of concealed carry, why can't there be a standard training in all states. As mentioned before in Kentucky, your license is a CCDW, concealed carry of a deadly weapon, which includes knives and other assorted items. During the classroom training all weapons are covered in the manual along with the possible consequences that could result in a libel suit even if you are justified in using deadly force.

Years ago when I took the course, the instructors frowned upon using a .22 pistol.

No course of fire required in Wyo and you can carry any gun you want. In fact, you don't need a permit to carry concealed at all.

No live firing required in Virginia either. You can take a course in a classroom or online. The certificate that you passed the course is all that matters to the county/state. A hunting course would even suffice, even if you took it years before you apply for the permit. Just need the certificate showing you passed.

In Indiana no courses needed. Carry whatever you want. 100 bucks for a lifetime personal protection permit.

PA - open carry no license needed (except Philly).
Concealed or motor transport, and Open Carry in Philadelphia, you need to have a "License to Carry Firearm."

No course of fire required, carry any firearm you like.

Louisiana formerly asked if you were going to carry a semi, revolver or both. Simply check both and you were good to go. They recently did away with this so it is no longer an issue.

As to training, Louisiana is pretty strict on this. Trainers have to teach several hours of things required by law. Many of those things is on the law. It takes a lot of a person's time and then the range time is so simple a blind man could pass it. Cost of this session is about $150 to the instructor and about eight hours of your time.

There is a way around the training and at a much lower price. Go get a parish permit to carry. It takes about 15 minutes and only good in that parish but will cost about $40. You get it back in a few minutes after applying. Send a copy of the parish permit in with your application for a state permit and it serves as training.

So you can save $110 and under 8 hours in getting a LA permit if you desire and never ever fire a handgun.

Oklahoma has basic course of fire. If you shoot a revolver, you stay with a revolver. If you shoot semi-auto you can carry either semi-auto or revolver.

Default Michigan

Michigan has course material requirements and accepts any training program that meets those requirements. State law requires a minimum of 30 rounds fired. The most common course is a modified version of the NRA Basics of Personal Protection in the Home. The range course of fire as outlined by the NRA includes 98 rounds fired on target at distances up to 21’. It’s up to the instructor to certify the student and it doesn’t take very long to determine if they can properly handle a firearm.

Any legal handgun can be carried on a CPL and you may carry as many as you like. Federal law limits the minimum collapsed length of a rifle or shotgun at 26”, but Michigan law sets it at 30”. Long arms that are between 26” and 30” are required to be registered as a pistol in Michigan and currently even those can be carried. There is a bill in the works to redefine pistols, rifles and shotguns and bring us in line with Federal law.

In California I think it is set by the county sheriff. In Sacramento county I recall it had to be 21 hits out of 30 rounds at 7 yards. In Placer county it was a ten round group no bigger than 8" at 10 yards. Only three handguns on the permit, and had to qualify with each.

Arkansas, if you qualify with a revolver that's all you can use. Qualify with a semi-auto you can carry both. There's a little shooting done but I don't think anyones ever failed.

In Wisconsin, anyone can carry an exposed firearm as long as you can legally own one.

To carry concealed, you must pass a firearm safety course, of no specified length, with no required test, and no required live firing, or have proof of another state's concealed license, or have taken a hunter's safety course, or have been in the military or police, or have taken any police firearm safety course.

It is very easy to get a concealed permit in Wisconsin, but then again I don't see any restrictions written into the second amendment either.

What I find really odd is that some states require live fire and have a pass fail test or whatever, and I can come into your state with my WI license and carry having NOT proved my mettle.

That seems unfair to the residents of that state that went through the testing.

To be clear: I am all for testing and rigorous training and regular practice, but I am against those same hurdles restricting a citizen's right to carry a weapon. I think a lot of folks are with me on that sticky issue.

The state may require a specific weapon, but my thought has always been, it's good to take the test with the gun you plan to carry. Ya know, just the common sense part of practicing with what you would use in SD situations. But I used a Ruger Mrk .22LR, to be sure I passed the test- knowing I needed to practice a LOT with the carry gun afterwards.

In Colorado no course of fire required. Carry any handgun you want and as many as you want. I'm big on "shall not" but without military or LEO training I think course fire is good common sense. Frankly I'm uncomfortable around anyone with a firearm who doesn't have military training. Nothing like a Drill Sgt (Drill Instructor for the Marines) explaining it to you. Sorry to say my Drill Sgt seemed to always have his foot in my *** (and everyone else); I seemed to have had a better attention span.

Everyone should enjoy the opportunity to name your weapon with your favorite girl's name and then sleep with it in the middle of winter in a canvas tent dug into the snow with a candle burning to keep the humidity from turning your tent into a block of ice.

I actually enjoyed boot camp. So much so that every now and then I would smile while the drill sergeant was screaming in my face and that would get him so mad I would end up doing hundreds of push-ups and became an automatic volunteer for the worst duties he could dream up. He wanted to break me but I knew it was just him doing his job and I actually enjoyed the entire experience!

Oklahoma has a course of fire. Semi-auto will qualify for semi-auto, revolver and derringer. Each of the others only qualify for that type. Most instructors provide .22 semi-auto so that their students get all three endorsements.

I'm not real sure about Missouri's requirements, but I will find out tomorrow at 9:00am because that is when I'm going for the course. I'll get back with some facts. wish me luck!

Kansas CCH requires a course of fire, 18 hits of 25 rounds shot at 3, 7 and 10 yards. You can qualify with any handgun and carry any handgun. An 8-hour training class including the range time is required to apply for your license.

I didn't know that. I guess it would help maybe if a woman wanted to qualify with a gun with not so much recoil.

It's been so long since I qualified for my "Carry Permit" I had forgotten what the qualifying course requirements were!! I just remember that my brother-in-law and I went together...he used a .22 L/R Rimfire and I used a Colt Commander in .45acp and scored higher than he did....I like to remind him of that.

The Great State of New York, has no live fire training required.
Imagine that, I guess it's hard enough and takes long enough to get a carry permit, they figure you don't really need to know how to shoot. You must show that you put a deposit down on a gun, but you cannot touch a handgun without the permit, go figure. Each handgun you want to carry has to be listed on your permit, by filing an amendment, before you may possess the gun.

Jhawk412 gave a good rundown of the way it is in Kansas. I'm curious about the fees charged in other states. A CCW class in Kansas can cost anywhere from $35 to $185 depending on who you use. Both the wife and I attended classes offered through the Parks and Rec Deptartment in Topeka, cost was $35 each and included donuts in the morning and pizza for lunch.

Once you have successfully completed the class you take your paperwork to your county Sheriff's office. You have to write a $100 check to the state and a $50 check to the sheriff. These fees are non-refundable, get turned down for the permit and you are just out the money. Then wait for approval from the state. May take 90 days.

Once you are approved you have to take the state issued paperwork to a drivers license examining station. Only certain stations will process CCW permits. I had to drive 30 miles one way to get to one. Pay them $16, they take your picture and issue a temporary thermal print permit. Sometime in the next 2 weeks you should get your regular permit in the mail.

Long process but worth it. I was just wondering if the process is that much different in other states.

Ha Ha Ha!!! You were wondering if it was different in other states???

Well some states you don't need a permit at all.
Some states you pay the local law $10 and he hands you a permit.
Some states you send in your documents and $50 and wait a month.
Some states you take a lot of training, fill out a mountain of paperwork, turn in paperwork at one office, then get more paperwork and turn that in at the sheriff's office, wait for him to send you more paperwork, take that paperwork to another office and wait for that office to approve you, then receive back all paperwork and turn it in to the state and wait a few months to see if it goes through.

So yep, there's some major differences out there. But I see the House passed the national reciprocity bill. Let's hope that thing gets into the senate and then BO signs it into law. That will make life a lot easier for all of us!!!!

That's what we do in Indiana, pay a hundred bucks for the little pink CCW card and your good to go. For life.

As far as " I think a pass/fail rating is a very good ideal also. It is just being responsible." OR "My personal opinion is that there should be some live fire course with a pass/fail rating. "

I think you should take a test before you vote, or before you can print your opinion in the newspaper.... we wouldn't want to be irresponsible in exercising a constitutional right.

In Texas, I shot for qualification with a rented 9MM semiauto but I own only 4 revolvers. Like the previous poster said, if you qualify with a SA you can carry either, if with a revolver then your CHL is valid only for a revolver. I think the minimum calibre is 32 or above, not sure. I have 2 38's a 44 Spl and a 45.
The CHL is valid only for handguns, no other weapon, and no limit on the number as long as one can conceal them.

N C handgun safety course and course on laws governing CC then to the range 80% of 50 rounds at 7 yds. pay the instructor something like 100- 125 bucks and the 80 to county sheriff which includes fingerprints and all checks and then about 70 to 90 days you get your permit if that is you haven't been denied. Time frame 0f 70-90 days depends on how busy the cc permit system is. Good for 5 years. Renewal is only 70 dollars and no fingerprints as long as you haven't let it expire. If you have then you start all over. You can as far as I know use anything to qualify and not restricted to any particular gun for carry.

I kinda skimmed through the posts so if this has been posted....sorry!

Pa is "shall issue" no courses of any kind are needed. If you can pass a background check and have $50 you have a permit for 5 years. Carry whatever handgun you like. Open carry is OK but Philadelphia frowns upon this...BIG TIME

SC , most courses are $125, and runs pretty similar to the NRA course, with SC laws taught, of course. Then you send in papers with 450, and wait 2-5 months. Last couple of years it's been running about 4 months, simply due to the number of applications they get. Thank the Lord, lotsa good folks are getting permits- let's just hope they know what they're doing, cause the CC course is surely not enough. The lady beside me when we shot that part of the course- was about 70, using a revolver she couldn't load. Instructor helped her with every shot, but she still managed to hit my target once.

GF I know you meant your comment in jest, but I DO think there should be a test to vote.

Listen to the reasons some people vote for their choice... They may be voting the party line, or they may have read something and heard the candidate stood for ONE issue they like. One gal I knew voted because the guy had nicer hair than the other.

And 24spencer,
I think guns are totally banned in Mexico. That really keeps the crime down there doesn't it... Gun bans scare me!

Default CC Handgun permits

In Pennsylvania the county sheriff issues concealed handgun permits. As long as you don't have any serious arrests you will be issued one. No training, no shooting. In the county of Philadelphia, you do have to go up to the police academy range and fire a few rounds. That is one of the reasons that Pa permits are not recognised by more states. A Pa permit is good for 5 years.
Under the federal law, for retired police (218) retired officers must quallify once a year. Its a 30 round course and is shot at 7 yds, 15 yds and 25 yds. If you want to carry a revolver you shoot the course with a revolver, and if you want to carry a semi auto you shoot the course with that style of weapon. You are not restricted to any one gun. That permit is only valid for one year.
