Corian grips on a carry gun?
Does anyone have experience using Corian grips on a carry gun?
I believe they are noticeably heavier than wood - any experience would be appreciated as I plan on ankle carry a model 36?

interesting. on one hand not much on the planet could kill em without killing you first which is a big plus.
on the other hand I just dont see a substantial improvement over some of the plastics already on the scene

If you have them, sure. Not worth the extra price for a dedicated carry gun. (says the guy with Ivory on some of his guns)
I think the weight difference would be no big deal. We're not talking about five pounds of corian.

I had Corian panels on a 1911. They are pretty slick if they aren't checkered. That would be my only worry or warning.

Sir, that would be my concern as well. I have a set of Ajax faux ivory (i.e., plastic) magnas on my 25-9, and they're very slippery. I actually added skateboard tape to them.
Hope this helps, and Semper Fi.

I have 4 sets of Corian grips. They are very slick and 2 sets have chips broke out and I have not used 2 sets. I like the smooth elk horn the best and there is not much difference in cost. Even though the elk horn is smooth it is not slick. Larry

Grips and Ankle Carry
I have a rig simular to what you will carry. My M649 has smooth grips. They are Micarta, cloth and resin, used in many applications, i.e. knife grips and semi-auto grips. They don't slip, even when wet. The problem is they are hard to come by. I have ankle carried since 1972. The best ankle holster I have found is a Galco Ankle Glove. I can wear it for fifteen or more hours with no discomfort.

Corian is way too brittle. I had a pair shatter like glass.

+1 on Micarta over Corian. I machined a set of Micarta grips for a customer the other day and they went flying across the shop by the time I pried them off the fixture with no ill effect. Corian would have been in a million pieces. Its a very heavy material but for J frame with round butt magnas you should be between 1-2 ounces. These N-round targets in Micarta are 6.2 oz

I didn't even know that you could get grips made of corian. I thought it was only used for kitchen counter tops! In my opinion, wood grips look the best, and hard rubber is best for a carry gun. In a carry gun, functionality is everything, and the last thing I would want is a slippery material for my hand to hold onto.

The benefit of Corian is the variety of colors, if you're into that kind of thing.
For grips that will be hard used, as in a carry gun, I like the G-10 material. Light, durable and functional. What more could you want?

Corian is an easy material to fabricate. As far as being slippery it depends on how you prepare the surface. its a very durable material and wears well. I'm considering it myself ,having used it as a construction material for various applications. It will definitely take a lot of time to make a grip with though, Rick.

Another plug for canvas Micarta. I've owned several Bark River knives with handles of that material. It looks slick but is just a little grippy, even wet, and is just about bomb-proof. It can be had in various colors from ivory to black.
A set of Micartas for a round-butt J would weigh a good deal less than the Pachmayr Compacs I have on mine. Of course I don't carry mine on the ankle--too old and creaky to stoop and draw.

Look at the plus side........ you could also use your Corian Grips as a cutting board out in the field. LOL!
