Folder in the pocket. Too much garb on the belt already without adding a fixed blade knife to the mix.

Lockback folders unless I'm hunting. Usually lockbacks then too, mostly.

I differ a little. I sometimes carry a Gerber MkI boot knife. But mostly it's a CRKT M-16 w/o a belt clip.

Zero Tolerance , Tip up , custom holster by TDR911,
Reason: Much quicker access in close quarters than drawing a pistol.

With the t shirt cover there is no print but instant access. Being from the city and exposed to some bad enviroment has led me to train daily & carry in this fashion.

most of the time it's a SAK Soldier in the pocket,

I use the screwdrivers far more than the blade.

I do carry a fixed blade every once in a while in a belt sheath. Generally I don't carry a fixed blade in the city, no need to draw attention. In the country it's just another tool on the belt.

I carry a fixed blade (among other things) when I run. It has a tanto style blade and is carried in a kydex sheath point up in a shoulder strap arrangement originally meant for a handgun. Both the knife and sheath were made by a knifemaker friend of mine. It's especially useful in colder weather as a last resort, since I won't have the dexterity in my fingers to open a folder quickly enough.

I also have a mini kukri by the same maker which I carry on my belt if I expect to be in the woods. The blade shape is extremely effective whether skinning a groundhog for the pot or hacking off limbs, tree or otherwise. The differential temper makes it tough enough to pry apart stumps or punch through a car door without damage to the point. And it's small enough to carry concealed if I want. So far I have seen only one other guy who carries something similar, and he carries his all the time wherever he goes.

Since the question asked about fixed blade knife carry, I won't discuss the various folders I use. I will sometimes pocket-carry a Blind Horse Knives Frontier Trapper in a Knives Ship Free pocket sheath.

I carry an A.G. Russell Woodswalker almost all the time in addition to my folding pocket knife. It only has but a 2 3/8" blade but it will do anything from peel and apple to skin a feral hog. I like to use it for food and skinning things as it is easier to clean than a folder.

I carry a Spyderco Bill Moran fixed blade drop point pretty often, in the kydex sheath in my right front pocket.

Talking Small Fixed Blade

I carry a Blackjack Small with curly maple handle in a flat back pocket holster. It has a 3"blade and the handle is big enough to get a good grip on. Plus, it won't close on my fingers. I don't think of it as a weapon but more as a working/utility knife.

When I'm not at work, I'll carry my Becker Necker horizontally just to the left of my belt buckle. I bought an aftermarket kydex sheath for it and it's very secure. Very nice knife, I might add.

Whenever I can, I ditch the folders and go with a fixed blade. The main reason is that I enjoy them more, but I also prefer their simplicity over folding knives. Both for utility or SD, I do better with a fixed blade knife.

I've got several models to choose from, but these two get the most use. An old RAT-3 (D2) and a custom (also in D2) by a mate of mine.

They are big enough to get most jobs done, yet light enough to comfortably carry around all day (and the RAT is ugly enough to abuse without feeling guilty!).

It's from Mariano Yannoni, a local maker. I'm really fond of his work, small/medium sized fixed blades are his specialty. His e-mail is [email protected]

Everyday carry, hunting, fishing, camping or just working around my little hobby ranch, this is the only knife I need.

Sometimes I carry a fixed blade knife when hunting.

When I hunted in Canada, and could not carry a handgun I carried a large fixed blade knife.

I am a believer in always having a knife. I was a Cub Scout, and later a Boy Scout, and cannot think of a single time [except on post 911 flights] that I did not have a knife.

Today when I leave my place in the country I always have a Swiss Army Knife, a SOG Flash II given to me by a good buddy as a retirement present, and a Cold Steel 5" Voyager given to me by Lynn Thompson.

When here at my place I always have a Kershaw Ken Onion Gryst, with half serrations, I use this knife daily, and again I always have the Cold Steel Voyager from Lynn Thompson in my back pocket. My thoughts are if he thought enough of me to give it to me I should carry it 24/7, and I DO.

Same goes for the SOG knife and I won the Kershaw shooting against a well known SWAT Team, so these 3 knives have special meaning, and I have also found them to be most useful.

Yes, I am a big believer in the Knife. They never jam, and they never run dry.
And they are a useful tool as well.

PS, I was a Butcher for several years, and I do know what a sharp knife is capable of.

I am always amazed when I encounter someone that does not have a pocket knife...

I believe thay call that style of knife the Trapper??? or Muskrat???

Cannot remember, but those blade styles have stood the test of time for a rancher.

Franciscomv

re fixed blade vs folder...

Funny that I should read your post today.

Just yesterday I was putting a tarp over my hay ring. I was tying down the tarp to keep the rain off of the hay bale, so it would not rot before my Llamas and Burros could eat all of it up.

I was using my Kershaw Ken Onion Gryst, and I would open it, cut the cord, close it, stick it in my pocket, on the clip, tie the cord and move to the next tie point.

While doing this I told the wife, this would be a whole lot easier, if I had a fixed blade knive in a sheath, as I could "whip it out, cut the cord and slip it back into the sheath, and then repeat as necessary...

I told her I just might need to get a little handy fixed blade knife for Ranch duties...

Traditional slipjoints are excellent work knives, besides being beautiful (and legal almost worldwide). The one in kraigway's picture is a stockman (trappers and muskrats are two other different patterns).

NE450No2, funny you mention ranch chores. I started favouring small fixed blades over folders when living and working at my family's horse ranch. Folding knives would just be a pain in the behind to clean after some chores, and sometimes I needed something a bit tougher.

Don't get me wrong, I love folding knives of all kinds and carry them daily. I'm sure a pretty simple sodbuster could take care of 99% of my everyday cutting needs, but I still like to have a proper fixed blade knife handy.

I carry a Ken Kershew Onion clipped in my left front pocket and a Queen single blade folder in my right pocket. When in the woods or working on the farm l carry at least one fixed blade knife on my belt and will sometimes carry a knife on a leather strip around my neck.

My carries vary a good bit. One favorite is a 60's Randall #1 worn IWB:

There are a few others in the rotation, depending on mood or style:

Formal occasions demand something a little nicer:

For outdoor activities (hiking, camping, etc.) the new Gerber LMF or an Ontario Spec Plus model. Great fixed blades knives that are durable and cost effective. For self defense purposes, the legal options are considerably less plentiful ... a Cold Steel Safekeeper (sans dagger point) will usually suffice.

You bring up an excellent point, a fixed blade knife is a lot easier to clean that a folder, for sure... I have this "little" Randall...

pff

You have some very good and classy knives. And you have reminded me, along with Franciscomv, that my Randall Trout and Bird would be just about the best "ranch" fixed blade knife around.

Or maybe that little knife I got in Africa with the giraffe bone handles.

I am a big fan of the Randall blade design of the Model 1, Model 5, Model 14 etc. The modified Bowie design as many people call it seems to work great for actual use for me. For a big game knife I do not like the top edge sharpened. For a fighter, sharp for sure, and on the Trout and Bird I use the top edge for bones, and joints saving the regular edge for regular cutting chores.

I have gutted deer and wild pigs with the Trout and Bird but you have to be extra careful not to cut open the stomach or the intestines with the sharpened top edge.

I will also say I like the looks of the "nicer formal occasion" knife you posted.

Besides looking great, I think the handle/blade relationship/shape looks good.
Who made it?

That is one thing about a Randall knife, I have never handled one, regardless of blade length, design, shape, that did not feel ALIVE.

And I have used the Trout and Bird and a 6" Model No5 quite a bit on game and found them to hold a good edge and to be easy to sharpen.
The T&B is stainless and the No5 is Carbon.
Both have cut great.

Me too! I still mourn the theft of my Randall #5 from over 32 years ago.... I only had it for a year or so, but God I loved that knife.

I sometimes carry a folder that started life as a fixed blade.

Too bad Randall never made one of these.

The fighter was made by Keith Kilby some years back. Its bar-none the fastest blade I have ever handled.

I had Keith make a duplicate in plain 1095 to keep from scarring up the original. Its very close and has excellent feel also, but its not quite the same.

The 'feel' is what sets most Randalls apart from the rest. The tech is a little dated and the fit-and-finish is decent but the ergonomics are what sells them. Unfortunately, a good many are ordered nowadays for display with combinations of options that work against you.

One thing about Randalls; they are ready cash at any gunshow. As long as its not totally destroyed it will always be worth more than you paid new for it. 'Customs', even from big name makers, rarely hold value as well.

Pat

I only carry fixed blade knives when in the Field for extended periods of time, otherwise a 4" Marbles Gladstone High Carbon Steel Stockman model in in my pocket daily.

For outdoor activities I carry an old Herters improved Bowie. It holds an edge and I don't care what it looks like.

I've went to a lockback box cutter (utility knife) for everyday carry. With its replaceable blade its always razor sharp.

If I carry a fixed blade in the "civilized" world, it's a TOPS Mil Spie 3. It's slim, not to long, and 154CM steel. If I'm out in the sticks, my options are wide open regarding a fixed blade. I always have a good folder on me though.

Here's a few of mine.

Top is a Gerber for field use. Middle is a Buck Ranger for EDC and a Benchmade folder for EDC.

I carry a Benchmade 890 (assisted opening folder) about 70% of the time. However, there are times when my Dozier New York Special or Bud Nealy Escort (by Boker) fit the ticket. The Nealy is so darn thin I can carry it at times nothing else will work, and the Dozier, has a great mix of carry options, and is built like a tank. I have seen the Boker, as low as $50 to $60 on the web, which makes it a great deal as well.

I also try to follow the lead of Brian Harrison, a knife maker from Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Carry a folder for public use, and a small fixed blade that only comes out in times of need.
