Recommendations for low ride IWB Holster for a 638
Does anyone make an IWB j frame holster that allows the cylinder to ride just below the belt?

High Noon Hidaway Ally is what I use. Not formed to the gun, but holds it in place very nice.
10 To 3 Position

I clicked on this just to recommend Lefty's stuff, but I see that Sip beat me to it. I think I'm going to order another holster from him this week to take advantage of the free shipping - I love that first one pictured above.

I use a DeSantis® Cozy Partner™; conceals the gun very well and is very comfortable.

I have a Wraith IWB holster by Seth's Gun Leather that rides low, like you describe. I did have to request a lower ride height, which added a bit to the turnaround time but not the cost. I consider it the perfect ride height for me, low enough that the cylinder is just under the belt line but not so low that it interferes with getting a good grip on the gun. It's also very comfortable and stable when worn.
And to give a rough idea of the ride height:

Barami Hip Grip
I like the hip grip. It allows the cylinder to be held by the belt. As shown on the M638.

HAve you tried a Remora?
Since there is no clip, you can literally set it at any height you wish. Plus you can use it as a pocket holster too.
Don't roll your eyes at it until you've tried it. It's unbelievable.
Certainly worth a $25.00 roll of the dice.

I'm another big fan of Remoras - I have one for almost every handgun I carry and they're what I use most often for carry. Not with the Detective Special, though - that goes in the Bell Charter Oak holster.

A good cheaper alternative is a simple Uncle Mike's IWB holster. I bought one for my 642 thinking it was going to be a temporary thing. Over three years later I'm still using it.
To get the gun to ride just where I wanted it, I un-stitched the plastic clip and re-stitched at the just the right height / angle. The cylinder rides below the belt and I got a perfect angle for the grip.

A friend of mine has been a CCW holder for a long time, and he carries his Detonics Combat Master in a cheap Uncle Mike's holster every day.

My only problem with my Remora is that it sticks to my skin way too well and gives me a rash. I guess if your a "real man" that might not be a problem but I like to be as comfortable as possible. I think it gets slippy or at least feels like it is when wearing a t-shirt in between.
Of course, this may not be the case with someone else and maybe your skin isnt irritated by them. I can easily see how they are great for some but I was disappointed with how uncomfortable it is for me.

I always wear a t-shirt under my outer clothes, so I've never encountered that issue. It underscores, however, how we all have different needs and how there's no one perfect solution for all of us.
