Default Pistol Wear Trump Card Subcompact holster/belt

I just got this Trump Card Subcompact holster/belt from the folks at Pistol Wear in Oklahoma. Hard to say how they could have better customer service - I posted a question to their website, they called the next day to answer, they were out of stock on what I wanted but made it up and got it in the mail overnight, and it arrived the next day. Oh, and for a pretty amazingly low price, too.

Pistol Wear started out making activewear holster/belts for folks who exercise. They advertise this smaller Trump Card model as primarily a concealment rig, though it would certainly work for activewear carry. The Subcompact model is the smallest of two sizes of the Trump Card

The Trump Card is a neoprene holster (the Subcompact is the smaller size - Ruger LCPs, D- or J-frame snubs and small Kahrs and the like will fit) on a breathable belt that's designed to be worn (like SmartCarry) below the beltline in the waistband or else (with the aid of an over-the-shoulder strap the Pistol Wear people include) as a shoulder-rig bellyband.

The one-size holster has some stretch to it, and the Subcompact version easily accommodates a tiny 9 or .380. Again, a 2 1/8" D-frame or 1 7/8" J-frame fits fine (I'm happily wearing my DS in the holster right now - but a 2" Rhino will not fit) and actually seems perfectly suited to this holster.

Ruger LCP in Trump Card Subcompact holster

Kahr CM9 in Trump Card Subcompact holster

J-frame 1 7/8" in Trump Card Subcompact holster

D-frame 2 1/8" in Trump Card Subcompact holster

The design includes a retention strap that locks down with a magnetic snap. This really makes the draw somewhat slower than from a SmartCarry (about half a second - a lot faster than I'd have thought). If you're willing to not fasten the magnetic snap/strap, you can draw just as fast as from a SmartCarry rig. I don't really see that this would be unsafe as friction from the pants keeps the gun in the holster just as it does in the not-secured SmartCarry pouch.

Magnetic snap/retention strap

Here's a video review by a FL LEO who shows how well the magnetic snap/retention strap work in vigorous shaking (very well, indeed):

Pistol Wear Trump Card Holster Review - YouTube

(Please note that the FL LEO's statement that a J-frame will not fit in a Subcompact Trump Card - something the Pistol Carry people repeated to me as well - is just not correct. A J-frame snub and a D-frame snub fit in this Subcompact just fine - see the pix above.)

One thing that's different from the SmartCarry/Thunderwear rigs is that the neoprene would allow the possibility that something could snag the trigger and actuate it. A piece of plastic or even cloth inside the holster would prevent this - though it strikes me as a really unlikely scenario anyhow. Still, I'd either do that or use a Saf-T-Blok if I were wearing a Glock or other short/light-triggered gun in this rig. With a long Kahr or DA revolver pull . . . well, you do what you think is best. Carry Wear's legal team warns not to chamber a round during carry.

Unlike the velcro-on/velcro-off design of Thunderwear and SmartCarry, the Pistol Wear Trump Card improves by allowing precise adjustment of the rig with hook-and-loop, and then goes on and off using a solid three-snap attachment (minimizing the likelihood of having to replace the velcro).

Velcro adjustment

Three-snap on/off

The $36.50 (+ $3.20 shipping; can't beat that) rig certainly conceals a gun well and wears comfortably - way better than you'd ever expect for the price. The neoprene is, of course, waterproof; I imagine it could get sweaty under there, but it's a pretty small footprint. I guess I'll have to report back after I've worn it a bit - might give it a shakedown at the family holiday festivities tomorrow. And maybe on a hike in the foothills, right now.

Trump Card The versatile Concealed Carry Holster for business casual or professional dress attire. Designed for comfortable under arm carry, inside the waistband carry, or can be worn outside the waistband. The Trump Card holster is comfortable, ligh

Hope this was of some interest. I'm very happy to have found it and very happy with my customer service experience and the price from Pistol Wear.

All joking aside, this is proving to be a pretty versatile rig: wore it on a hike in the foothills, wore it yesterday at church, at the shooting range, at Mother's Day festivities with family, and later at a rosary for a departed friend. Works equally well with casual clothes, hiking gear, and formal clothes. Held the guns I was carrying (I wore it with the Detective Special, an Airweight J, and the CM9) securely and kept them safe from the sweat and rain. I did not note a lot of sweat buildup behind the holster (and none behind the belt), possibly because the footprint is so small (the Trump Card Subcompact definitely beats the SmartCarry in this regard).

They make a take-off on the belly-band that looks really good, too. Glad they have good CS, may have to give them a call. My belly-band is useful in situations, like shorts that don't take a belt, but not really comfy. Not BAD but not comfy. Theirs looked more comfy on the website.

How have you been dealing with this issue? I was more interested in this holster until i saw the possibility of a misfire at 12 o'clock. I'm thinking of reaching out to them to see if they can mock something up for my M&P9c.

Well, mainly just remaining aware because it isn't really an issue with the guns I'm carrying (the loooong DA pulls of the Kahrs, the LCP, the Detective Special or the Chiefs Special). (I always carry the LCP with a homemade trigger block behind the trigger anyhow.)

Again, if I were to carry a Glunk or an M&P, I'd likely either rig up a Saf-T-Blok or a homemade equivalent or else I'd put a thin piece of plastic between the outside of the triggerguard and the holster material to ensure it doesn't happen.

But I don't carry either of those guns, so I can't vouch for what works.

Thank you. This rig has been proving itself to be very handy - just used it on a somewhat strenuous hike in the mountains this a.m. and it worked like a charm. I'm not experiencing as much sweat behind the small neoprene holster/pouch as I do with the larger pouch of the SmartCarry.

this might be my answer. I carry an LC9 daily in an IWB holster with nothing between the holster and my skin. Here in Georgia, it gets might hot and the two leather holsters I have have allowed sweat to penetrate and rust the slide and the mag release button.

I'm new to the concealed carry scene and have been trying a lot of different options for carry. (Including, but not limited to belly band, thunderwear, sneaky pete, fanny pack, iwb holster... ) I'm not used to carrying a gun so comfort has been a major factor for me. I bought a Kahr CM9 to be my carry weapon and I saw from Erich's pictures how well it fits in the Trump Card subcompact holster. So, based solely on this review I ordered one. I absolutely love it. This is so much more comfortable than anything else I've tried so far. Mine has a crimson trace laser attached so its a bit tighter fit in the holster - doesn't really go far enough down inside to use the retention strap, but that doesn't bother me. The only real issue I have is the one that Erich stated in his review - the possibility of the trigger being pulled through the neoprene. I have mine stretched kind of tight though so hopefully not. And like Erich stated, the Kahr has a very long trigger pull.

Thanks for the review Erich

I too, use this Pistol Wear Trump Card band holster. It is comfortable, stays where you put it, (very important), made of "breathable" material, and is secure. I wear mine in a cross-draw position.

They may not be the best type of holster for "quick-draw", but security is more important for me. Your firearm is not going to jump / fall out if you run.

If you want to use this style of C.C. holster, I would get the Pistol Wear brand.

I've been using mine heavily for deep cover concealment since I first posted this almost six months ago - still works wonderfully. There are so many holsters and carry methods that I've tried; I'm very happy that I took the plunge on this one.

I came across this review recently when I purchased a Kahr CM9 for summer carry and jogging. Great job, absolutely convinced me to get the PistolWear subcompact Trump Card. However, I wanted to inform you of a nice surprise that now comes with the Trump Card. A neoprene covered plastic trigger guard that will prevent anything from inadvertently catching on the trigger when it is worn. It is Velcros in so it doesn't come out when drawing the gun.

Hey, thanks for the update. I still use my Trump Card all the time, and I think I'll head out to the garage to make one of those for mine.

I work in an office and have been using this holster with the shoulder strap to carry my shield and a spare magazine for over a year with excellent results.

I ordered mine in white and wear it over my undershirt and under my dress shirt. I even have a few "slim fit" shirts and I've never been outed. Great product for the versatility.

Question Good for petite runner?

Hi there, thanks for this excellent review. I've been trying to find a good holster for my bodyguard .380 and this seems to be a good fit for my small frame and lifestyle. Can anyone advise whether, as a female runner, I should carry on the front of my stomach, side, or against my back? I'd like to be able to carry behind if that's a safe option. And if that's the case, would I need to order a left-handed model to draw from behind? I am right-handed for other activities. Any feedback on ease and safety would be much appreciated!

I'm not a fan of any type of small of the back carry becuase you can really damage your spine if you fall on the gun

Welcome to the forum, and thank you for the kind words.

Some folks who are right handed use left-handed holsters for behind-the-body carry - I never understood that, as it requires the person to rotate her wrist when drawing. Nevertheless, it's sometimes done and advised for small of the back carry (but usually by people who aren't all that knowledgeable). When I started carrying in the '80s, it was behind the body, inside the waistband or on the belt. I always used a strong-side holster (I'm a lefty, so a left-handed holster) and it's always worked for me. It's also faster than the method that you mention - please note that you'll find no competitor who wears behind the hip carrying in a weak side holster.

Now, as to where you should carry: I don't know that anyone can say anything other than you will need to try it out and find what works for you. Every corpus is different, and your build will determine what suits your running style. The lightweight BG380 ought to be fine in this sort of Pistol Wear Trump Card holster/belt in either position. I've carried both appendix (in front of the hip) and behind the hip while running - both worked fine, but I've grown much more accustomed to appendix carry over the years, so that's where I default these days.

You might talk to the woman who owns Pistol Wear to see if she has any advice about the use of this holster by woman runners - I'm sure she'd be happy to help.

Again, welcome to the forum, and have a great rest of the week.

For me personally, it's appendix carry.

Here are my reasons:
1.) I can conceal it very easy with shirt tucked in or out (I can "see" that all is ok and concealed properly)
2.) For me, the most natural draw position
3.) Think about this, let's say someone came up behind you and bear hugged you. Most likely, your arms would be pinned. What would be easier to do, get a pistol in the appendix position or try to reach around your back.?

The item Erich reviewed at the belly to me would be best. My opinion.

The only time I carry at 5 o' clock is when I carry my full size .40

Default Thanks!

Thanks for the great advice. I went ahead and ordered the trump card because of all the rave reviews. I'll start appendix and see how it goes. I don't know a ton of petite runners who carry, so it's just a matter of trying different styles to see what feels and works best.

Thanks again.

Samantha, after you've used it for a bit, would you mind posting your comments? The Trump Card looks interesting, but I've already got over a shoebox of holsters.
